    Smoke from a fire in the background shows next to no wind, and from the shadows maybe a close to midday takeoff. Maybe too hot plus overloaded?

    You young whippersnappers flying out there without doing your homework treat yourself to a high density altitude demonstration. Set up a takeoff and allow yourself only 50% power on that takeoff with full tanks you will soon get a close idea of what your plane will fly like under high density altitude conditions. Use to make my students do it often.

    I'm not a pilot. So, I don't know these things but I have to ask... Why do guys who fly these taildraggers with the tandem seats, always fly from the rear seat? Wouldn't it be better to fly from the front seat where visibility would be improved?

    • @YogiCub181
      @YogiCub181 Před rokem

      It is a weight and balance issue, the placard on the instrument panel (which you can probably not see) says solo from the rear seat only. Also in this type tailwheel airplane it is worse visibility from the front seat. I usually stay in the rear seat when I take a passenger (always tell them they are the pilot, LOL) But I am also a Flight Instructor, so it is the normal seat anyhow in other tailwheel aircraft when giving instruction. If the student wants to really fly a J-3 then I will sit in the front seat as they will have to solo from the rear seat.

    Having grown up in Marion, NC, my first airplane flight, age 12, was from Shiflet Field, name for Bill Shiflet whose daughter taught Civics, Marion High School. In over 7 decades, having recently visited Shiflet Field, sad to say, very few changes have occurred relative to other airports in the area.

    My grandfather flew one of these in 1938-39. Then, in mid September, 1939, his logbook suddenly went blank. Apparently, Herr Adolph's adventure into Poland cause the US Federal government to severely restrict aviation fuel at that point.

      That would be correct the rule says "lights on if equipped", also no ADS-B required for us, it was many years ago...we just had to make the mandatory call outs back then. There wasn't much traffic when we went through.

    And that my friends is why I fly RC. 5G acceleration to 70mph vertical on my slow setup. No matter what the altitude or temperature. I love flyin, not dyin. To use the vernacular. And I am a cheap bastard, and RC fills the need. But mostly not dyin, I like having fun in the air... spending 200K plus to fly a straight line from pennsultucky to the jersey shore just to grab a burger as the reason to go there does not appeal to me. And I assure you I would die if I tried anything more exciting... I am a "what happens if you do this?" kinda guy. If that worked, "Ok, how about this?". RC only costs money. But it is worth it!

    • @aikimechanic

    • @hotliner2872
      @hotliner2872 Před 3 lety

      @@aikimechanic If I could afford to ~actually~ fly I would. Flying box patterns or cross country burger flights in a Cessna/Beechcraft/etc is not flying... to me that is just driving a Chevy Cruze down a straightaway at 55 mph, at much higher cost/risk. But still boring (when was the last time you were excited for a long airline flight?). Not to discount there are high pucker-factors with weather, hardware issues, ignorance.. I am not talking about 'scary', I am talking about 'fun' (for me! different folks, different strokes... I am not generalizing, just saying why I would not find it as interesting). If I could afford a Pitts/Yak/Extra or better yet some "cheap" turbine (an Albatross would be nice), then it is worth the risk! Otherwise I would just die getting bored and abusing my 172.

    My first job at age 14 in 19xx was as a lineboy where my family had been based well before I entered the picture. We had a lot of Cub and Champs on the line as primary trainers. This is very similar to how I started them when nobody is around with the one exception, I straddled the right main and hold the door post, but I am also well over 6 ft tall. I could nearly reach the throttle and the blade at the same time by the time I was full grown. On weekends at 6:30a when you have to start getting rentals out for 8a lessons, there isn't another soul around to lend a prop. Over the years I grew physically and learned how to prop radials, on up to bigger Jakes with 2B-20's, a lot of W670s with Curtis Reed props. Anyone that would think of touching a flat-6 or a three bladed prop needs their head checked. Otherwise, it can be done very safely for a lifetime. Simply never lose respect.

    • @YogiCub181
      @YogiCub181 Před 3 lety

      Very true I use my left foot to chock the right main and also hold the door post to keep from falling into the blades, I'm disabled so have weak knees. Can only do this with a J3 due to door opening and easy access to controls. Back in your day I use to say I would never handprop an airplane. LOL,,, Now those are the only types of aircraft I fly.
