Wow. Just... Wow. I've been listening to the recordings of the piano rolls Gershwin himself did, for over 40 years. Love them! This is a very faithful performance to those. Since I have very little experience playing piano, I could never reconcile what I was hearing, to how the hands move through the different parts. Now I can watch it, too. I'm so happy right now! Thank you!!

Definitely a piece that deserves respect, but I just cannot get into Gershwin. I think it’s the jazziness. I’ll admit I’m quite stuck in my ways when it comes to classical music. I know I need to expand my horizons. Life is short. I’m currently trying with several “new” composers. Today Gershwin was on the list. And yet still, despite recognizing that this piece is obviously amazing and well out of my wheelhouse, I think it’s highly unlikely I’ll ever purposefully listen to it again. It’s too repetitive and downright annoying at times. I haven’t heard his Concerto in F, so I’ll give it a listen - at least for a few minutes as I expect I will not much like that either. I hope to be proven wrong. Oh look, seven minutes into this song now, three since I started the comment, and I’ve heard fifty more jazzy variations of the same damned theme… AHHH.

Yo, la verdad, estoy locamente enamorada de esta ópera. Me he puesto a escarbar en profundidad, comparando actuaciones. Por debajo de lo más visto - y buenísimo, todo hay que decirlo - hay mas tesoros ocultos. A la moderna o a la tradicional, lo bueno es que esta joyíta del niño salzburgués se cante. Lo que mas me revuelve el alma es el dueto de Melia con Oebalus. Sobre todo ahora, sobre todo ahora... Hay guerra en mi país, hay guerras, guerras! "Natis cadut", lloran los padres... "Frater cadut"... "Sponsa sine complice..." "Reino sin Dios no perdurará, vida sin futuro - se extingue... Y aria "Laetari, iocari" irradia una alegría luminosa y muy, muy humana, ajena a la despiadada avalancha de la tragedia que ya han desencadenado los dioses...

I know this Liszt piece since I am now a member of the American Liszt Society (lifetime member). This piece is as devilish as his "Robert le Diable--Valse Infernale" operatic transcription, and as patriotic, heroic, and martial as his "Funerailles". Like most of his other virtuosic pieces, "Scherzo and March" features a lot of the so-called Lisztian pianistic pyrotechnics - like the false trill (just like the false octave), where a trill is done by alternating fingers in different hands, thunderous running octaves in low register, and infernal use of diminished chord changes (causing some music purists to try to outlaw the intervallic tritone). The coda of this piece---which is the much-faster reprise of the much-slower funeral march, is crazy-difficult for most pianists!
