Guy Clark - Step Inside My House (Official)
In the mid 1960s, Guy Clark wrote "Step Inside My House," his first composition, at 1548 Castle Court in the Montrose neighborhood in Houston, Texas. Guy did not record the song for release, but his friend Lyle Lovett, who heard Eric Taylor sing the song, recorded Eric's version with slightly different lyrics in 1998. This original demo of Guy singing "Step Inside My House" was found on a cassette tape in Guy's basement workshop after his death. The footage from Guy's house in the video was taken by Paul Whitfield for the documentary Without Getting Killed or Caught, released in 2021. The documentary is available on amazon.com. "Step Inside My House" is available on the album Truly Handmade Volume 1, released May 3, 2024.

And thats a fact.
Old timer here the old friends are all gone ahead. Few acquaintances but not the guys I grew and loved for so long. Must be a reason the big guys keeping me around. Guess I'll stay till my job here is done.
I'm an old musician and I've listen to music all my life it, Guy the mastercraftsman.I had the pleasure listen to him talk, play and sing and when his gig was finished he joined me for a beer so laid back and down to earth, this is one of his first songs I never knew he recorded it . Thank you Guy ! Sail on
Foolishness chasing the truth. Goes.nowhere cool
Idk if I've ever loved mandolin so much. Its so subtle and understated, but so so sweet 🍑
Steve is one of my all time favorite musicians, but I have been listening to this version even more than the original. Thank you.

The video is a very seductive look at the Guy's inner life.... nicely done.
Been wanting to hear this for years. It was like the 1st time I had guy clark song.
Guy Clark is a National Treasure
Simply beautiful.
Beautiful
Truly beautiful. Sublime.
Saw Guy in concert in the early 00s and I requested this song. He said, “Nope. I never had that one.” Glad to hear he did record it, but I have to say, Lyle sure found the center of it.
One of my favorite singer songwriters ever!
The film and book, both called Without Getting Killed or Caught, are absolutely excellent. So pleased the film is now easily available on Amazon. Really looking forward to this album!
Been eatin cold dog soup and rainbow pie for too long now, this was a nice treat. Miss that ole’ Guy.
Wow, just incredible. I've wanted to hear his version for years, better than I imagined. I thought it had been lost to time. The footage from inside his house is perfect.
I attended the Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark concert in Carrboro, NC back in the 80s. Was a beautiful thing.
Correction: this was the first song he kept. He told me he wrote about two hundred songs before this one. He tossed those out. Lyle Lovette claimed Guy never recorded it.
Coming home from work - and found this, unbelievable, thank you, thank you, thank you
Thanks so much for posting this! Love the tune and love being able to see Guys home and his stuff
I fell in love with this song hearing Lyle sing it over the years. Thank you for giving me another look inside this house. ♥️
Beautiful as always! Thank you.
Wow
This is the perfect topper to my recent deep dive back into Guy’s work. His story is incredible and inspiring!
JUNIOR COLTRANE channel posted a tribute video of GUY... People say it perfectly captured his musical soul. And I agree; Guy would be really really proud of himself in that video.
❤❤❤ And the message of this song makes singing like this possible: czcams.com/video/Q557X6cs2t0/video.htmlsi=Opx7kS-BOG-p4Lje
What a treasure
Wow, amazing to hear Guy Clark sing this beautiful song. I cant wait for the album release
👍🙏
I thought I might catch a glimpse of the Randall knife.
So good, what a life.
ooo new upload
it's been an awful day, and to see this pop up was a treat. Thank you all so much.
Incredible! Loved seeing the handwritten song lyrics.
great vid, thanks for taking us into Guy's house. It's the first time that I have heard him sing the song that he did not like, but Lyle Lovett championed
He was a true renaissance man.
Lyle’s version is all I’ve ever known. When he does it on a CZcams video he says it’s the first song Guy wrote and that he never recorded it. It’s good to hear this.
Thank you for the song as usual the beauty brought tears to my eyes. And thank you for a glimpse inside.
I went to the Joe Ely, Lyle Lovette, John Hiatt, And Guy Clark. Concert. Very small event. Guy Clark sings the first song LA freeway.. even though I've heard that song since 1976. I still had tears streaming down my face. Just so beautiful.
I've loved Lyle's cover of this song for 20 years. I'm so glad to finally hear the original. Thank you
i grew up listening to this song on the radio, and I've loved it this whole time!
Written by Joe Ely Guy and Townes Both covered it
Written, as I understand, for his wife's funeral. When you know that, it takes on an added dimension. Look at the number of times this song has been covered, and you begin to realise quite how good a songwriter he was. And he was a pretty fine guitarist as well.
Co-written with Shawn Camp

♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
This song has made a home for itself inside my heart. ❤
