Charming quilt. Thanks for the demo. HOpe you are all dry now~!
So pretty!
Missouri Star Quilt tutorial will have the measurements, for this block
Thank you for this review. What size sew steady table is this? I really want to get one and I like this size.
It's the large - 25" x 22" in size. it's really a great addition to the sewing space!
I was wondering if you ever do a " tacked" or "tied " quilt? Thanks 😊
What are you using as batting😊
Btw.. it says David but I'm a wife...Tami
I keep ALL RIBBON!!😊😅😅I must be part crow. But it's great for crafting❤
I'm 63, and I still have, and treasure, the quilt that my grandmother made me for graduation. This is exactly how she finished her quilts!! Sweet memories 💖
I was amazed you found shirts for $1!!! They are much higher here - $6 to start - and of course the more expensive brands can be $10! I try to look mostly in the very large shirts. There is a youtuber called Catbird Quilts who will show you how she cuts her shirts, etc. The yardage from a big shirt can be a yard or more! I found a beautiful circular table covering with truly elegant crocheted lace on it. I dyed it periwinkle with rit dye -1/2 Cup Indigo and 2 Tablespoons Fuchsia which needs to be in 6 gallons of water or more - and now I have to figure out how to detach the lace! It was crocheted on over the turned up hem. I would love suggestions by the way! The inner part of this table covering is too thin and holey but the lace is amazing!!!!! I tend to cut 10" squares from the backs because I love quilts made from shirts. If you look on line you will see some very different examples. I am in the St Louis Missouri area. I found a lot of short sleeve madras shirts a few years ago and am treasuring them.
That animal fabric would be nice as a whole cloth quilt. Use a red linen border and a bright solid back! Quilt it with a zebra pattern or something animal like!!
Looking forward to the tutorials!! Gorgeous quilts!
is the plate on your iron super smooth? mine feels ever slightly gritty like little bits of sand is scattered on it?
Worth noting that there is absolutely no starch in vodka. It is simply water and ethanol (and may include smoothing agents such as citric acid and glycerol). All of the starch is consumed in the fermentation process where it is converted to alcohol. What you get, then, is the residual from the ethanol and any additives which is imparting the "body". Regarding Isopropyl alcohol: it is a solvent; one should exercise real care in using this in the sewing room as it will mess up your flooring and finishes of any furniture. So adding it to a spray bottle means you might have overspray that might cause some unintended consequences. I know many people like and use this method (vodka). I use StaFlo 50:50 which suits my preferences (utility and economy). I'm not sure why one would add essential oils as generally oils and fabric do not mix (at least in my universe).
I use dryer sheets or fabric that is incredibly ugly…Wonder what I was thinking when I bought it…It’s great…Don’t have to rip anything out
yes! hah - that ugly fabric trick is a great one. There are some pieces that make me do the head scratch as well! And yup, tearing paper after it all (if you use paper) is no fun!
Thanks for demonstrating this technique using the quilt backing folded over. The flange will work particularly nice to offset a plainer, colored binding. Love it. I make lots of baby quilts as my children, children's friend and friend's children are at child bearing age. My current quilt is a big LeMoyne Star center block set on point. (Middle is easy to piece, and the corner setting triangles mean.....NO PIECING). I've been insetting a flange between the big block and the CST's. It is so easy to do and adds both interest AND texture. Isn't glue the most wonderful thing? I glue my binding fully in place. (And a Hot Hemmer will ensure perfect miters. Just spray some starch and press them in place). After I stitch it, I use 1/4" fusible webbing to press it over. It means at the machine, all I have to focus on is topstitching. I glue baste my blocks too. I don't have to spend much time with a seam ripper. I can phase my production because you can just stack basted pieces because no pins means no pricks and the sticking blocks. (Can you tell that I'm evangelizing for the Church of Glue and quoting from the Book of Elmer?)
church of glue... book of Elmer - that is seriously the best thing I've ever heard!!! I'm a convert as well. ;) Doing a flange really makes a difference doesn't it?! It is so surprising how much it can do. I need to do it more often.
A teflon coated fiberglass mat works perfectly as a pressing aid to protect the batting. (And they are perfect for pressing your blocks as your iron will glide over them with no distortion in bias; works well with any fusible techniques). Some cotton batting has some polyester in the scrim which will scorch.
ooo - I will have to look into this one! It's so true about the scorching, you do have to be careful with that.
@@Patchworkposse They are perfect for laying a on top of your wool pressing mats to preserve them. They are inexpensive on Amazon, and can be cut to size. Misty Fuse sells Goddess Sheets, but I'm too cheap. They are super heat conductive too. I wouldn't quilt without them.
You bring up a good point. I have never had fabric color rub off during handling. That is a problem. I do not prewash my fabrics as I don't care to work with prewashed fabric. I DO prewash all of my quilts as I don't want to pass along a quilt with high contrast that gets washed without a safety net. I'm one of those people who loves light background quilts with darker colors. I wash with synthrapol so that I know that I'm washing away excess dye and setting the colors. A recipient would not know to do that. I have never had bleed. Not once. Not with reds, blacks, blues batiks. But this situation...that would have really put the utility of synthrapol to the test! Now, I did have a problem when my husband took a black cotton bathroom rug and washed it with a quilt (a quilt we take on the boat). It turned the white fabric grayish. Ugh! In your instance, I would have washed the test block in synthrapol to be satisfied that the end result would be satisfactory (no bleed; color fixed). Synthrapol has so much more efficacy in managing color issues in the fabric than color catchers. A color catcher does nothing to lift excess dyes, rather just catches them. So there could still be a problem in a subsequent wash.
Thank you for sharing all this info! I have not tried Synthrapol - will have to dig around and find me some and try it. Don't you just love it when others mix the wash - I mean, nice that he was doing something good, but yeah - sigh.
Love this trick!
Isn't it such a good one?!
Your #short started in a funny place, with the word DOWN. Intended to get us to probe further? Like the flange. I've done this on a couple projects. As you said allows for the placement of a pop of color. TFS
I know - sorry about that! Does make one curious I guess though!
Hug
thank you! I am out of town now - so when I return I will be able to put things away and get it back put together.
Oh no.....hows it going now?
Everything is dry. So far so good. I'm out of town for a few days though... Haven't been able to put things back.
Greatest idea very secure until stitched down ❤
It really is! The glue does help keep it in place when you are fussing with all the pieces.
Fun. Surprise. 🎉
This is amazing 😂❤😅😊 Thank you!
Isn't it?! Doesn't take much time either since it's going in the same time as the binding.
You are welcome!
I really like this idea
It's a goodie!
It's pretty but what is the surprise?
A typical quilt binding doesn't have that surprise pop of color tucked in. 🎉
Very pretty and Easy!
Yes it is!!
I watched many videos on using this ruler, and I don’t think you are using it correctly.
It's the way I use it and my blocks turn out great. Maybe flipping the block and realigning the ruler isn't what done by everyone, it works for me!
Would t it be quicker to do,this block as quilt as you go?
You could but not everyone knows or likes that technique.
Oh no Becky! Turn the fans on, shut the door, and go to LA for the week 😜
You know I did that!
Looks like a nice way to finish a quilt! What is the size of the backing fabric beyond the quilt edge? Sorry if you said it in the video-I missed it.
I believe I cut it 3/4" to 1". That is my typical size I cut at. Depending on the thickness of the batting and layers, you may need to do the 1".
So sorry. Keep calm and carry on. We need you and like you very much. ❤
Thank you, I appreciate it!
Sorry that happened to you. I have one floor in my home. It’s a 3 bedroom house. Long story short, my master bathroom sink pipe busted and was splashing water everywhere. I was out shopping with my daughter for about 2 to 3 hours and came home to not only my complete bathroom floor full of water but into my entire bedroom. It was all carpet at the time. I shut the main outside and we started to cut the carpet and thru it out thru the window. There was no damage to the subfloor, thank goodness ,but my bedroom furniture was water damaged on the bottom. I laugh now but cried then. But it all worked out. I now changed all carpet to laminate flooring.
It's so much work right?! ugh. water. love it, but really it can do crazy amount of damage! Glad yours turned out ok - hope the furniture damage was minimal.
Sorry, Becky!
Delene - no worries! still surrounded by the fans... but it's going pretty ok. will be glad when they leave the room, it's SO loud!!!
At least you noticed it before it caused major damage or mold got started. Look at it as a chance to reorganize. Again.
totally!! that would not have been a good thing. Reorganize it will have to be! yes- again. sigh. lol
I feel your pain, so sorry this happened to you! Hang in there!
Thank you! It's no fun. This is the first time I've ever had to deal with it.
😢😢😢 oh my heart hurts for you.
Thank you!!
Sorry to hear about your flood. I had this happen about two months. It was overwhelming to move everything. We had to take up the carpet. I kept reminding myself how lucky I was there was minimal damage. It was an opportunity to reacess what I needed. Best of luck!
We were thinking of pulling up the carpet but it's drying up so we didn't. But still so disruptive! Sorry you had this issue as well!
That looks great! I’ve never tried a flange binding ❤
You should! It's a great way to add just a little more to the quilt.
What is the purpose of the flange, is it instead of a border or just decorative? I've never seen or heard of adding a flange. I mean no disrespect and I'm not the quilting police. Heavens, I've only made one quilt when I was a teenager in the '70's. I'm very interested in anything quilting now and want to learn as much as possible. Thank you for posting this video. Happy thoughts! :)
For me it's to add a spot where your eye can rest. I started putting the binding on and thought it just was blah and there needed something a little extra. So the flange is a great piece to add. I'm excited about your new quilt journey!
I like that you are curious enough to ask as a new quilter. I believe it’s for a decorative look. It looks so pretty with a pop of color. I might have to try this! Welcome to the quilty world of fun! Happy sewing ~ Martha
I love a flange, just adds a pop of interest & really sets off a project. Planning to do a ricrac one this afternoon if I can get myself organized...and caffienated! Have a lovely day
Oh ricrac flange would be so fun to do! I may have to give it a try!
FYI don't use thermal tape (often confused with adding machine tape) as thermal tape has harmful chemicals in it that can transfer to your skin when handling. Thats why its recommended to wear gloves when handling cash register tape. I ordered my adding machine tape on line.
Yes. Great point! Plus when you iron it, everything would go dark. This is a great indication that you have the wrong paper.
That is super cute! Really adds a nice little pop of color.
I think so too! It's such a great way to add some fun to any quilt.
Very nice.
Thank you!
Thanks for this tip reminder. A seam ripper works great as well instead of scissors.
Yes it does! Thanks for the reminder! Especially if you can't find scissors that are sharp at the tip.
It looks like you're using cotton batting. Will this work on poly batting?
I'm really not sure! You may have to watch the setting on your iron and not get too hot- you could test a small section. Poly works a little differently than cotton. You may want to connect the pieces by sewing - that works no matter what the content is of the batting.
You might want to use a non stick pressing mat for polyester or simply parchment paper and do a test. I would not iron directly on polyester batting.
been doing this by hand (I don't like how it comes out by machine) - nice to have an option
I've never done it by hand- large basting stitches would probably work great. thanks for the tip!
@@Patchworkposse Yep, that's what I do; basting zig zags. It can be kind of relaxing really.
Why is it called a "hack "it used to be called a tip let me show you a little tip. The language nowadays.
