Hi, I'm Travis McGeehan, better known here as TiKevin83, and you're visiting a freshly relaunched version of TiKevin83 Speedruns. On TiKevin83 Speedruns we showcase console verifications of Tool Assisted Speedruns also known as (TASes), where we turn old video game consoles into player pianos and use them to beat retro games perfectly live on the original hardware. I also showcase experimental programming projects like RGBScaler.com where we make new tools to help preserve TASes. I also play Old School RuneScape, where I play in a Top 100 3 man Group Ironman and a Snowflake account whose restriction is being controlled only by a Game Boy Advance.
Is Numberphile wrong about Pokemon Encounters? DSUM and RNG Manipulation
Numberphile just put out a new video about calculating how many encounters you need on average to catch every unique pokemon in Gen 1 and across all of Pokemon - this response details how from a more "Computerphile" perspective their assumptions break down at multiple levels due to various different issues with the PseudoRandom Number Generator that Pokemon uses to generate randomness.

I would love to see more reactions like that!
This entire video comes off as intentionally obtuse. Of course the set of Pokemon you're able to encounter isn't uniformly distributed - Tom made it clear that this was a deliberate simplification so as to not distract away from the point of the video. Not once in the numberphile video was it stated that "this is how wild encounter distribution works in the generation 1 games" - the fact that this was acknowledged by yourself makes it apparent that the underlying purpose of this video was to stroke your own ego.
To your first part, I'm genuinely actually confused what the point of their video was, because they correctly proved the answer to the coupon collector problem without ever once mentioning that's what it's called. Using Pokemon as an analogy and simplifying out the non-uniform chances makes perfect sense for an educational video but why does the conclusion never loop back and mention what the problem they solved is usually known as? I really like Numberphile's content and that aspect made it feel like an excuse to slap a popular IP's name on the video in a way that wouldn't have otherwise been necessary if they just looped back to state the colloquial name of the problem they proved. To the 2nd part, I actually was most prompted to follow through with doing this response because my wife noticed the Numberphile video and thought it would be a great idea to react to it. The original title "Numberphile is WRONG" is too far toward clickbait than I really want so I've updated it to be more rhetorical. Ultimately my goal with this channel is to try to communicate speedrun and TAS concepts and document/archive TAS records, and ultimately their answer is correct under their assumptions but there's additional interesting answers with more complete information about the games to be had from the history of Catch'em All Manipless speedrunners DSUMing encounters and Catch'em All Manipped runners performing manips. I don't expect these videos to get wide viewership regardless of how I title them, I've been getting consistently 50-100 views per video for years and don't have any grand idea about changing that, but I'd rather be a little clickbaity and obtuse if it means 10 or 20 more people learning about intricacies of Gen 1.
@TiKevin83 >why does the conclusion never loop back and mention what the problem they solved is usually known as? I'm not sure. I think defining the coupon collector's problem an additional time would come off as redundant, I agree it should have been mentioned though. The point of the video? I mean, it was like any other numberphile video. Ask a question, give some context or practical examples, then go on to answer the question through math. Also Tom had the Pokemon plushies, he's probably a fan, and like if I were him brainstorming the video, I would have chosen Pokemon too lol Do see this video just comes off as like, off topic though? If Tom said something like "in gen 1, all Pokemon in Mt. Moon are equally likely to be encountered" then yeah I'd completely get this video. But he didn't. About two years ago when I was learning the yellow classic route, I wanted to better understand how DSUM worked (I understood that it was a value in memory, but I was curious how it changed frame-by-frame, how it interacted with soft resets, how exactly the value was used when encounters were determined, etc.). Some parts of this video would have been immensely helpful at the time. But I would've hated having to skip through the parts where you were reacting to a video that had almost no relevance to what I was trying to learn. Does that make sense?
@@minnowsr yes that makes sense - I could see value in doing a "Pokemon RNG in 2024 update" videos that just no nonsense explain the state of understanding of encounter/catch/battle RNG either lumping related gens in 1 video or splitting them out
it's always Sand-Attack
Has anyone looked for an absolutely perfect starter on tas, or is this totodile perfect? Are ivs maxed at 15 in gen2?

Brave. Very brave.
Any place to follow Grogir?
Yup! www.youtube.com/@Grogir
Are there any TASes as intricate as this in terma of the algorithms used? Are there similar ones?
Anything RPG that has item menuing can become similarly complicated to route. Malleo has done similar work on item routing in paper mario and we do some similar stuff in Pokemon when doing RNG manip
A game that's all Pokémon Gym puzzles? I gotta try it.
That RNG mod makes you sound like the real villain of the game! Clever.
you can actually graft a potato to a tomato. It's a thing. Maybe that was the thought for the JP storyline? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomato
That is crazy, I don't know if that was the idea but it could have been!
Thank you for continuing to keep it all so organized! Someday when I have the funds I still want to try OSRS with a GBA.
Just watching through now. In Falkner’s gym. If staying in green bar is important, why doesn’t he manipulate misses with tackle instead of manipulating min rolls? Thanks.
Rage is a move which gains more power as the user is hit. It would take more turns / more HP lost if Rage was not abused. Pidgeotto also will only choose Gust (100% accuracy) over Tackle as it is more powerful.
@@CasualPokePlayer thank you!
Always happy to see bugfixes for Gen 1, thank you!
good lad
tfw rotoscoping the display for the mosaic effect sounds like too much effort :P
Does this work on like 10x speed? I would also like to know if its possible to farm EVs via vs seeker method or farm exp using audinos so that it only attacks that pokemon?
Hi! I'm actually not very familiar with the pro battling/training scene, we do this TAS stuff mostly on the older games
J truly is in the top percent
Yeah the game sound from your mic echos, but regardless, great TAS and console verification :3
ah yeah I think I left desktop recording on and it doubled the game audio
@TiKevin83 oooh, that makes sense! Streaming and audio xP
The game audio is loud compared to your microphone. It would be nice to hear you a little better
for some reason it doesn't work for me, am using original gc controller with nyko adapter and mmjr2 build of dolphin emulator installed on galaxy s10e, am desperate to continue playing windwaker with original controller
I'm guessing it needs the official Nintendo gc to usb adapter, the driver dolphin built for it is probably specific to it
Why would you pick a girl for TAS if its slower?
It only saves less than 0.1 seconds which you would then almost definitely have to wait for later to get the right metronome RNG anyway
at first i was thinking this was a tas but then i realized that your were playing the game
You Play Computer?
In this run I'm playing on an emulator on a PC to make it easier to load the romhack :)
clicked on this for "oh there's a commentated version now i can understand this tas" instead I got "you know, you can also make a hole by putting two halves together"
I just started doing it today but it ain't receiving any imports I give it

For some reason my left joystick isn't registering, any idea what the error might be?
If the controller works on a gamecube I'm not sure why one joystick wouldn't be working. It may be detecting something else as a controller and requiring additional tuning of button mapping
I never saw this before, great commentary, was nice to see this! I heard the question about how Charmander would look like for this TAS. I never tried it, and this happend 10 years ago so I probably don't fully remember, but iirc, Charmander was slower than Squirtle at the beginning, but not by much, and then it was slightly faster for Clefable cause of Rival not having Gyarados and Intimidate. I still think Squirtle is faster, but I feel like it'd be pretty close.
Can you link the adapters you used please?
Controller adapter a.co/d/9m9vRfE USB C to USB A adapter a.co/d/bGA334y
Is it just me or are the audio and video not in sync? Also BOY that color palette is really painful to look at.
You're right they seem a bit off! I'll try to figure out where that's coming from
volume on this is ultra low, but good emulation!
yeah wasn't intending to show the emulation quality too much just that you can even do this with the original controller hardware, but the audio and video is crazy good too
I'm surprised by the use of clefairy, i thought perhaps Zapdos would be the late-game sweeper.
Zapdos, while quite good, is a bit out of the way and has a hard time against opposing Rock/Grounds (there being three in the E4 alone).
Dude! This tool looks absolutely incredible, thanks so much for sharing.
Hi TiKevin, I'm your 1000 subscriber
If the wireless adapter being in changes RNG, could you manipulate it by (virtually) putting it on and taking it off repeatedly?
yes but it only affects certain places like map transitions so you'd lose more time forcing it by running in and out of buildings :)
