My family owns a small cottage in vermont near the Canadian border and we pass through the notch on our drive up from northern Massachusetts. In the winter, there’s the weather before the notch (usually much more mild) the weather in the notch, (I’ve seen icicles frozen on highway signs horizontally and it was the first place And only place I’ve ever seen trees fight each other) and then the weather after the notch, which was usually a snowy run off of whatever you just drove through. It’s a different world in there.

I live in indiana and was up in vermont for a time being. a few weeks ago i managed to hike a portion of mount liberty but had to turn around and head back after getting to a little over 4k ft up. I miss it there and I really want to hike the AT just to end up living in the northern areas of the US. My heart is in the mountains.

As of 2024, the "new" tramway is as old as the original one, and efforts are underway to replace it. I rode the original tramway in 1953, and would love to go back, but alas, age has caught up with me, and even if a trip were possible, with my luck it would be closed for rebuilding!😁

l can't recall the very first time l saw the Old Man of the Mountain, but l could have been as young as 5. l'm 68 now. My family lived in South Dartmouth, MA, and we'd sail and hike [mostly NH] in the summer and ski, frequently in the Franconia Notch area, in the winter. Even in crappy weather one could see the Old Man. The most memorable rock landmark of my childhood. When we were sailing out of Padanaram Harbor, the most prominent manmade navigational aid was the MIT radio telescope at Round Hill. Seems like wherever one was in Buzzards Bay, you could see it, like a steel mushroom. Why do l bring this up? The demolition of the radio telescope and the collapse of the Old Man were just months apart. l'm still nostalgic/sad about both.

My grandmother brought us up to Bethlehem every year to ski at Bretton woods during February vacation, and every time we went up, my cousins and I would fight to get a view of the old man. Punching and pushing each other out of the way to cement our snotty faces against the windows of her Buick to see him, even when it was dark (the old man on a full moon was a sight to see). I was deployed to Iraq when the old man fell, and it was as equally doleful as anything else I had experienced that year. After getting out of the military, I have made northern New Hampshire my home, and I wander the mountains of Franconia Notch and still look up at where the old man stood watch. Every year I visit the old woman of the notch (The watcher), and talk to her about the old man while looking up at his place. The old man is still there in spirit, the ambience of that area is one of a kind and something I have never experienced anywhere else in my travels around the world.

Its been 20 years now. As a New Yorker, I am Privileged , and honored and humbled that I could say that I was a (New Englander) NH resident for 3 years (2002-2005). I am fortunate to have seen him and I am blessed that I was a NH resident when It happened. It hurt me too Captain. The first written mention of the Old Man was in 1805. The formation was first noted in the records of a Franconia surveying team around 1805. Francis Whitcomb and Luke Brooks, part of the surveying team, were the first two to record observing the Old Man. It became a landmark and a cultural icon for the state of New Hampshire. It collapsed on May 3, 2003. RIP Old Man (AKA "Stone Face")1805 - May 3, 2003. Ingrained the hearts and minds of all New Hampshire residents and the USA. 😢
