Hey, I’m Barend from Tameson, and today we’re going to talk about bimetallic thermometers. First, we’ll see how they work, why they are used in industry, how to select one, and finally why calibrating them is important.
A bimetallic thermometer uses a bimetallic strip to measure temperature. The thermometer's stem comes into contact with the fluid. Within this stem is the bimetallic strip, which is essentially two strips of different metals bonded together. As temperature changes, the metals expand or contract at different rates, causing the strip to bend. With proper calibration, the bending moves a pointer on the dial to indicate the temperature. They are fully mechanical and do not require a power source to operate. The most commonly used bimetallic strip design for industrial applications is the helix strip.
Bimetallic thermometers are common for industrial applications because they are simple, robust, and provide accurate temperature readings. They are easy to install and maintain, and ambient temperature changes don't affect the reading. They also offer a good cost-to-performance ratio.
Bimetallic thermometers are not suitable for extreme temperatures and are typically used between -70°C to 600°C. They also have a slower temperature response time compared to other industrial thermometers, such as gas expansion thermometers.
To select the right bimetallic thermometer, consider these 5 main selection criteria:
First, the temperature range. Ensure the bimetallic thermometer is rated for the temperature of your application.
Second, the stem length and orientation. Determine the immersion length, or depth, of the tank or pipe where the thermometer will be used and use this to determine the stem length. Next, decide if the stem should be orientated in the rear or under the cabinet. This ensures that once it is installed, you can easily read the dial in the cabinet.
Third, cabinet material and diameter. Ensure that the cabinet material is suitable for the environment and small enough to fit in your application, but big enough to properly read.
Fourth, know how accurate of temperature readings you need for your application and selec the appropriate accuracy class for the thermometer.
And lastly, decide if you want to use a thermowell with the bimetallic thermometer. A thermowell is used to protect the stem from the fluid and allows for easy removal of the thermometer.
Calibrating your thermometer is essential. A thermometer typically needs calibration if it's new and lacks a calibration certificate, has been in storage for an extended period, or if you suspect an inaccurate reading due to handling or dropping it. Always calibrate it to a temperature close to the process media temperature. Calibrate it manually with the ice point or boiling water method, or send it out for calibration.

hi! what if I need the pneumatic cylinder is on extract position? what should I do? thank you. Is that possible?
Hello, to keep a pneumatic cylinder in the extended (extract) position, you need to maintain air pressure in the extend port while ensuring the retract port is vented. This can be done using a 5/2 or 4/2 directional control valve.
Hi, how do AN and ORB fit into this standard? I've been confused about the difference between these and the ones you showed
Hello, AN (Army-Navy) and ORB (O-Ring Boss) are specific thread standards. AN fittings are commonly used in aerospace and military applications, while ORB fittings are designed for hydraulic systems to provide a leak-proof seal with an O-ring.
Great explanation of seals. Do you happen to have large diameter seals? Shaft Diameter 393.7 mm, bore Diameter 444.5mm and 20.65 mm width
Hello, we can offer rotary shaft seals up to 500 mm ID. You can check the range on the link: tameson.com/collections/rotary-shaft-seals. If you need any additional info, please contact our support team.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Does it matter if the Y strainer is installed "upside down"? In other words, does gravity influence its operation?
The Y strainer can be installed vertically or horizontally, but the filter leg must be pointing downwards to ensure that any filtered material does note interfere with the main flow. You can find more info in our article: tameson.com/pages/y-strainer
@@Tameson Thanks a lot for the reply! I asked because my brother had a heat pump installed, which requires a Y strainer on the return pipe...the geniuses he hired to perform the installation left the filter leg pointing up. After telling my brother that the strainer was incorrectly installed, those geniuses replied that the leg's position doesn't matter, the Y strainer will filter all the same, the only thing that's important is to observe the arrow that indicates the direction of the flow... Top quality installers 😅 I have a spare Y strainer at home, upon closer examination, seems obvious that if the leg is pointing up, the flow will be easily disturbed by buildup of "dirt" in that narrow space, like you said. Aside from this, it also seems obvious that the leg is meant to be pointing down for maintenance reasons, since the "dirt" will naturally fall out by the action of gravity when the filter cap is removed... but if the leg is pointing up, the "dirt" will remain inside the pipe (if it's heavy enough). There are so many incompetent installers out there, asking insanely high prices for subpar work... it's crazy... and it's even crazier that they double down and try to justify their sloppy work when it's pointed out to them.
this is some fire stop motion ngl

Greetings. how do you block the air to block the piston mid-stroke or any other point?
To block the air and hold the piston mid-stroke or at any other point, you could consider using a 5/3 solenoid valve with a closed center position. This type of valve can block the air flow and maintain the piston in its current position.
Thank you ❤

What is the maximum speed of a pneumatic cylinder? ISO 6432
The maximum speed of a pneumatic cylinder, especially one that conforms to ISO 6432 standards, can vary based on several factors including the bore size, air pressure, and the load it is moving. Generally, pneumatic cylinders can achieve speeds up to 1 meter per second, but for an ISO 6432 cylinder, the typical speed range might be slightly lower due to its design and application focus on smaller bore sizes and precise control.

Hi I have replaced my caprice solenoid valve. After that car is started making huge metal grinding sound. Can you please tell me what could be the reason.
Hello, you should check if the valve is installed properly. There are many things that can cause this issue, but the first thing is to check the installation manual and the installation guidelines.
Will an average safety valve release the pressure of a 12 SCFM pump at 150 psi effectively enough, or will I need to pick one with a larger orifice?
Hi, to ensure the safety and efficiency of your system, it's crucial to select a safety valve that is not only capable of handling the specific flow rate of your pump but also the pressure it operates at. An average safety valve may not be optimized for your specific setup, especially considering the flow rate and pressure you've mentioned. For a 12 SCFM pump at 150 PSI, we recommend selecting a safety valve with a larger orifice. This will ensure that the valve can release pressure effectively and maintain the safety of your system without compromising performance.
Do you use LSR (Liquid Silicone Rubber) technology to produce them? Thank you
HI, we source our products directly from manufacturers and, as such, do not have detailed information on the specific production technologies they use. However, for your application, you could consider exploring our range of suction cups, which are selected for their quality and performance. Please have a look at our selection here: tameson.com/collections/vacuum-suction-cups
Great work
Thank you so much 😀
Thanks , it’s useful. Could you please explain me what is deference between Exn and Exd , in electric motor pattern!?. Thank you very much
Hello, Exn refers to "non-sparking" equipment, which is designed to not produce sparks that could ignite a flammable atmosphere under normal operating conditions. This type of protection is suitable for use in Zone 2 hazardous areas where flammable gases, vapors, or mists are not likely to occur in normal operation. Exd, on the other hand, stands for "flameproof" equipment. This design contains any explosion within the device and prevents it from igniting the surrounding atmosphere. It is suitable for Zone 1 hazardous areas, where flammable gases, vapors, or mists are likely to occur during normal operation. Hope this helps.
Was the directives not changed?
Seems like a fake. The couplings can only be connected with a great deal of force. Its not so easy as the video shows.
Thank you for the comment about the GEKA couplings video. We understand that the ease of connection as shown in the video may not always reflect every user's experience. It's important to note that the ease of connecting GEKA couplings can vary depending on several factors, such as the condition of the couplings and the presence of any debris.

how to increase vacuum pressure in vacuum generators
Hello, to enhance the vacuum pressure, you can consider the following steps: 1. Check for any leaks in the system and repair them. 2. Ensure that the generator's filters are clean and unobstructed. 3. Adjust the supply pressure to the optimal level as recommended by the manufacturer. 4. Consider using a vacuum generator with a larger capacity if the current one is not sufficient.
