That technique is immeasurably harder than this video and I'm over here sounding like a mouse is dying on my snare drum in slow motion. I've been drumming for 25 years in marching band and jazz band. Maybe my technique is getting in the way. It's just ruffing or if not quiet and sloppy
Don’t stress about it, you’ll get there!! I’d suggest rewatching the video and focusing on the pivot and how the stick is supposed to come down then back up. If you can dial that in and have the head and rim basically hit at the same time it’ll start to come together! I believe in you!! 🤘🏼

@@thenamescraft9527 you’ll get it! Try and observe how you are coming down to the snare. The goal is to have the rim and the tip of the stick hit at the same time basically. If you have a loud rim sound you’re likely hitting the rim before the tip of the stick reaches the head or you’re not even enough between the 2, causing the hit from the drum to be quieter than hitting the rim. Takes lots of patience and time! You got this! 🤘🏼

I just found the Hi-Hat Splash by accident on my humble Alesis DMLite, thought it might be a fault, read up and realised it's intentional and what a real Hi-Hat does.

thanks man, i had pretty solid gravity blasts a few months ago, but lost them because of marching band music this helped me figure out why they were super sloppy

Yo, when I learned this it was called a one-handed roll, and it was more or less just a party trick lol. We didn't really practice subdivision for this technique, but myself and other drummers I knew eventually thought to try it. At the end of the day, none of us thought it would be as prevalent as it is today.
Yeah there’s lots of names for it. Freehand technique, one handed roll, rim roll, gravity blast, etc. back in the swing era there would be some cats that would use this (mostly as a party trick), but as time went on and bands got heavier, it’s started being incorporated into songs in the late 90’s early 2000’s. And I used to be the same way as I mentioned in the video. Just used to give ‘er and hope for the best lol nowadays deathcore and death metal bands use this, the push pull technique, and double strokes on the feet as essential techniques to play what’s required. It’s pretty crazy how things have evolved to help gain speed while maintaining accuracy!
