    It’s funny how small the stages were back in those days even at the big stadium shows. No projection screens. It was more about the communion of people and their bond of music. A long lost magical time.

    something that is often overlooked, is the "album art"...I always admired the "vignette"-style illustrations of the various songs; for me, as I hear any of these tunes, in my mind I can see the accompanying artwork........

    Here in Brasil, 'Goodbye Yellow Brickroad' was released as a single album. I had a copy for sometime. Then one day, I watched the president of the Elton John Fan Club of Brasil give an interview and he said that this was a double album. I thought to myself: "How come he's the president. He's obviously wrong!" Years later, I was arriving at my favorite record store and I saw a guy holding a double album, and it was 'Goodbye Yellow Brickroad'. I didn't want him to buy it, for a new it was the only unit in that store. He suddenly stopped checking it out and put it back, as if obeying my will. It was mine! Listening to it was like listening to a new Elton John album. So many songs were left out on that crappy edition. Evevrything was different and much more beautiful such as the colours, the pictures inside and the sound was oh so much better. It was made in the US. Thanks for posting this great documentary.

    Masterpiece. As a professional musician myself (Berklee Grad), the thought of writing a classic song in 10 minutes or less, and then doing the basic tracks in 1-2 takes is mind-boggling.

    I got bored with this which is a shame because I'm a big fan of the release. A friend gave it to me around 1976 as a gift on two cassettes. I flogged the first and periodically played the second. But that's good enough. As a 12 yo I smashed that 1st side...love lies bleeding and so on. It's one of the greats. And I'm grateful for the company EJ and band afforded me

    iam surprised there isn't a 50th anniversary edition. I just got the remastered version and since i am deaf in one ear and one eye .i can still hear both channels nicely. i hope Sir Elton releases achieved bootlegs or FM radio broadcasts as a lot of bands are doing the same. My favourite track on This album is I see that Movie Too and Sweet Painted Lady both sequel into the order of tracks. Olsson drums are superbly played also tuned with his tom toms .

      Wow! What a way to start your record collection!

  • @Fuzcapp

    If it's not the greatest double album ever - it's pretty damned close. Even the White album hasn't worn as well as GBYBR. Maybe Quadrophenia. Maybe Hot August Night. But the songs on GBYBR still hold up today in terms of melody, production, sonic craft, lyrics. Apart from Jamaica Jerk Off, it's perfect. And it's sort of the second and third vinyl to accompany Don't Shoot Me, which came out the same year. Certainly a purple patch for Elton. 1973 was an incredible year for albums.

  • @Fuzcapp
    @Fuzcapp Před rokem

    5:54 - no. If I never ever heard that song again, I would be very much the worse for having lost such a song in my life.

  • @Fuzcapp
    @Fuzcapp Před rokem

    Apart from Saturday Night's Alright ... GBYBR album is typical Bernie Americana. Which is something of a concept around the album. Bernie was kind of obsessed with Americana which comes through on Tumbleweed Connection and songs like Salvation, Rocket Man, Slave, Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters, Susie Drama etc on Honky Chateau.

    Funny how Davey talks about playing 'Saturday' before GBYBR was out. I remember buying Don't Shoot Me and being disappointed that Saturday Night wasn't on it. Little did I know, I just had to wait a couple of months (and pay $18.99 for the double album rather than $9.99 for a single album. 🙂 Oh! Those were the days.)

    • @davidfifer4729
      @davidfifer4729 Před měsícem

      $9.99? New, single albums were $4.96 where I lived (Sacramento, California) in 1974. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, I'm sure, was less than $10.00.
