    Loved this video. I’m not a fan of giving up the half-shutter focus and you’re the only one I’ve watched who has a solution that doesn’t give that up. I set my R6II up the way you did except i set up the * button to toggle between subject types, since I want to take more than animal photos.

    THANK YOU for this video! I went ahead and set my camera up for Birds & nature shots as you instructed. one thing that is really bothering me is that I keep getting all the red tiny boxes on my pictures in "Playback" Also, Do I need a lens hood? I have the 18-150 lens & the 100-400 RF lens. I still get blurry pics. I want to zoom in and get very sharp pics...I hope that's possible. I'm in the learning phase.

    Thank you for the video. What a coincidence! Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II is my beloved telephoto lens that I never want to part with. Only difference is; I use DSLRs. Pair this legendary lens with a legendary body 1D Mark IV and EF 2x III extender. This produces a reach of 780mm due to its 1.3 crop factor. Yes, it’s heavy so, always use it on sturdy tripod or monopod. I've seen my friend use EF 400 f/4L IS II DO version. Seems pretty good. But not good enough for me to replace my 300mm 2.8 with that glass. May hand-holdable BIF combo is 7D + EF 400mm f/5.6L. Enjoy wildlife safaris in national parks and capture shots as per my choice with these combos. Being a hobbyist photographer, I’m completely satisfied with these gears. Do not see compelling reasons to switch to the mirrorless system. Rather save money for safaris. Thanks again.

    1. Con, the rear AF button - I don't have a problem and I never hit it accidentally like you describe. Second Con - no joystick, apart from the need of joystick being reduced by state of art AF and subject detection modes, you have failed to mention that you can setup the rear touchscreen to move the focusing point when you hold your camera to the eye. 3. Con, battery - fair enough apart from you failing to mention, that you can power it by PD powerbank through USB C or PD adapter if you close to outlet - so theoretically, if overheating is not and issue - which can be sorted by portable battery powered fan etc., you can film as long as the capacity of your powerbank allows. 4. The buffer, yep is is shallow, but you can greatly compensate for it by utilising the smaller raw option or jpegs, an I also use 20 FPS only and try to burst in critical moments only. I am not going to go through hundreds of shots to choose the 5 best ones. 5. Horses for courses, R8 is not built for long continuous filming in higher ambient temperatures, unless you are willing to use small portable fan i.e. - amzn.to/3YeajFE For me R8 is perfect, I use it for photo and video without any limitations as my ambient temps are usually not too high and if I need to record something continuously I utilise the fan.

    My Lord, what a wild and sad story. It's crazy that the talon could penetrate the skull. A rescue probably wouldn't have even helped by that point. Assuming the brain drama took place before it was perched up in imobile. It's a shame that even if we can never document behavior like this again, we'll be looking at such a small sample size that it's hard to deduce much. This might happen three or four times in a lifetime in a way that can be monitored. Maybe never again. And at that point, it's hard to draw any reasonable inferences or conclusions about why this happens. What triggered the hesitance to eat the hawk immediately.

  • @michaelcorcoran8768
    @michaelcorcoran8768 Před 24 dny

    Yeah one thing that I have definitely observed since I've started following nests is that people get caught up in it and get very mad at who's ever taking the photos for not intervening. Even when it's not practical or legal or necessarily even beneficial for the species. Become sort of like a reality television show instead of nature. And I can understand it. Even just getting this short video I was falling in love with tuffy. But I have to remember that there's really no reason to judge the eagles. They're behaving on instinct and we're presumably confused themselves. But boy you really wish you could put your mind temporarily inside the minds of the mother when she was abducting the thing and then chose not to kill it. Did they think it was an eagle?? Why feed it 16 times and then change your mind. I doubt the eagles even really know themselves why. But it is incredibly bizarre behavior. Infinite variables at play. Hopefully now that this is sort of a famous story that people will spot a successful version of a bald eagle raising a hawk.

  • @michaelcorcoran8768
    @michaelcorcoran8768 Před 24 dny

    ”eagle experts assurred Us this wouldn't happen." I'm not an expert but how could anyone make that assurance? These things are incredibly hard to predict, even if the proper eglets from the proper parents. Even then, occasionally they're sibling aside or infanticide or one won't get fed or whatever.... So I don't know how they could confidently assert that the Hawks wouldn't be killed. But like I said, I'm not an expert. But I would have assumed that was a threat at any point.

      We learned very fast not to trust this group. This abduction story happened again this season in San Luis Obispo, only this time the hawklet was with two eaglets--all about the same age. The hawklet was almost killed / starved after a few weeks and luckily fell/ was knocked out of the nest and rescued. The hawklet, last I heard, was going to make it.

      If you can afford it, the Canon RF 100-500mm L is an amazing lens. This camera, however, can take other pro quality glass as well (EF 300mm f/2.8 ISii L or EF 400mm f/4 DO ISii. A more affordable option for folks or more of a casual birder, the canon EF 100-400mm f/8 is a super sharp lens and very affordable. It struggles, however in low light (early morning, late evening, overcast days).

    I very much appreciated your documentary, which skillfully conveys a tremendous amount of informative while also remaining respectful of a difficult situation. I live in a town just a bit north of Gilroy and followed the Tuffy story as it was unfolding on facebook, and was so annoyed at the folks who always seemed to come up with a 'benign' explanation for the vicious behaviors that we could all see for ourselves that was happening between the eagles and hawklet. I felt gaslit, because I could see with my own eyes what was going on. I imagine you felt 1000x more of that exasperation. In any case, thank you for providing a detailed account of little Tuffy's life and for sharing so much of your expertise. You have a great talent for not only narrating a story in a captivating way, but also for designing a visually stunning presentation. Thank you!

This red-tailed hawklet abduction by eagles happened again this season (down by San Luis Obispo) and would have ended the same. Luckily, the hawklet (named Chance) fell/was knocked out of the nest and rescued. Looks like he'll recover from his eagle-induced injuries! I really appreciate your comments:-)

    • @lets_go_birding9096

      Hello, although the EOS R7 was not the main camera that I tested in this video, it performed poorly compared to the R5 in all of the tests that I used it in. I am working on a video comparing these lenses and the RF 100 - 500, where the R7 is the star of the show. I never use my R7 with either of these lenses anymore because its product is just inferior to that of the R5 - at least in my testing.

  • @samgeddes6028
    @samgeddes6028 Před měsícem

    That was a great comparison. I’m considering one or the other and leaning toward the 300 ii. You mentioned that the r7 did not take well to the 400 do, but does the r7 take well to the 300ii? With teleconverters?

    • @lets_go_birding9096
      @lets_go_birding9096 Před měsícem

      I'm working on another video where the R7 is the star of the show; however, based on the experiments I did run with it, it just did not perform well compared to the R5, so I just don't use it anymore with these lenses - especially in low morning light. I am getting a lot of questions about its performance so, so I will properly do experiments with it just to make sure it really is inferior.

    On your r7 tests with the DO, which shutter option did you use? There is a lot of shutter slap on the r7 with the mechanical shutter. If you are doing perched birds then using the electronic shutter removes that slap. I get very sharp images from the r7 in ES, which the DO, for perched birds. For moving subjects, I use first curtain shutter with good results on the DO.

      Hello, with the R7, I almost always use electronic first curtain (EFC) to avoid rolling shutter and shutter shock. All tests were doing in EFC.

    Would it be possible to have all of these "birding" settings in a Custom Mode (C1) ? I wanted to do a custom mode for macro photography, it didn't work because it was not compliant with the in-camera bracketing stacking feature. My other failed attempt with this camera was trying to use flash with the in-camera bracketing/stacking - it doesn't work. Additionally, one can only be in Auto Focus to use in-camera bracketing/stacking. One usually want to be in manual focus for macro. SO - this model does have limitations, for sure, so I want to know if the birding settings can reside in a custom mode before I go Helter-Skelter. Many thanks in advance!!

    I am so happy I found your channel. I am slowly figuring out all the settings on my canon r5 but it takes time and patience. with your experience and explanation I feel like I am finally understanding the different focus points options. I wanted to ask you a question about taking a picture of two birds feeding each other. which focus points would you choose for this scenario? the box one? I took a picture but it was all blurry. thank you for your help.

      I'm glad you found my video helpful! I'm actually working on an updated R5 setup guide--I've changed a few things in my setup as of late that I need to pass on. I would use the smallest AF box (spot autofocus) and place it on one of the birds. Make sure your depth of field is not too shallow (try F8 or so, not F4 or wider), so both birds are in focus. Also make sure you are taking a lot of shots-I always shoot in high speed continuous plus (14 frames / second). Then find the sharp ones and throw out the soft ones.

    Can I use this setting on my R5?

  • @bill29456
    @bill29456 Před měsícem

    I’d like a comparison between the 300 2.8 version 1 and 2. I also wondered why you chose the r7 when the r5 allows you to add a crop mimicking the r7. Just courious

    • @lets_go_birding9096
      @lets_go_birding9096 Před měsícem

      That would be a good comparison and I might just do it. 90% of the comparisons between these two lens were done with the R5, which is my go-to camera for birding:-) Also, the R5 in crop mode dose not mimic the 1.6 crop factor of the R7. APSC sensors (R7) do not lose pixels with the crop factor, but putting the R5 in crop mode is the same as cropping in post, so pixels are lost--completely different forms of magnification:-)

    I’m glad you did this. I own a 300 2.8 and was thinking of getting a 400 DO. I guess I’ll use the teleconverter in stead of a different lens.

    • @lets_go_birding9096
      @lets_go_birding9096 Před měsícem

      Even though the 300 2.8 very slightly edged out the 400 DO, with regard to sharpness at the periphery of the bird for short to medium distances, I just can't give up that 400 DO! It has been my go to lens this entire Eagle season. Its more than 15% lighter and its bokeh is magical. Plus, it autofocuses is like a champ.

    Excellent! The only problem I encountered is I can not set Electronic First Curtain...it was disabled and the only option I had was mechanical or fully electronic shutter. That is because Auto Level was set to ON, turn Auto Level off in order to get Electronic First Curtain shutter.

      @@lets_go_birding9096 Yes I also always have auto-level off. I also store files as CRAW and not JPEG, eye tracking on, ISO Auto up to 6400...Topaz can handle the noise of ISO 6400 for most of my photos.

    Just purchased the R7 & the RF 100-400 lens after after using a bridge camera for about 3 years. Expensive birthday present..😂🎁 There is a great deal of tutorials on CZcams about the R7 but yours has been a life saver, your breakdown of the camera is easy to follow & very accessible..📷👍. I take my camera everywhere, even on the Ambulance as I’m a Paramedic based in Yorkshire, UK,🇬🇧. You never know when there’s something interesting to snap..& I mean the wildlife not my patients..😮📷. Thanks for your help..📷👍

    Hello, do the settings also work for animal photos? or just the birds?

    • @lets_go_birding9096
      @lets_go_birding9096 Před 2 měsíci

      Yes, of course. In fact they work for sports or any other type of action photography as well. There are few settings that need to be tweaked, but anything from birds in flight to basketball, the settings will work. We just have to adjust your autofocus area (a.k.a., autofocus box, autofocus point, autofocus method) accordingly.
