5.5x14 CB700 Steele Snare Drum Demo

This is an old CB700 Steele shell snare drum that was given to me a few years ago. I had some spare tube lugs, tension rods, and die cast hoops that I ended up installing on the shell to replace the old busted lugs. To my surprise, this drum sounds really good. I’m running an Evans coated blue hydraulic batter over a hazy 300 snare side. I’m also using Puresound Custom Pro 24 strand brass snare...

Based on the hammering I would say it’s a sabian complex prototype
This was custom ordered from the Sabian vault. Based on the conversation I had with Mark Love, this is an Artisan and not a Complex HHX.

It’s a Xenon front bumper. I do not believe they make them for this year truck anymore.

Thanks! I had a shop install the lift as I was not setup at the time of owning the truck to do the install myself. This truck is long gone unfortunately. I’ve got a 23 super duty now.

Did uploading a video help with the tuning at all?
It helped about as much as your question.
How are they adjusted?
I retuned the snare drum and pitched the batter heads up slightly.
@@drumminjc oh ok. Still means nothing to me, a complete novice, i guess you need to tighten or loosen a metal ring around the edge of drum to get the correct sweet spot? Batter heads?🤔
@@charliegeorge. I gotcha. Yes, there are screws called tension rods that secure the top and bottom heads/hoops to the shell. You tune the heads by tightening the tension rods up or down. Everyone has their own tuning method and there’s tons of videos on CZcams about tuning. I may make a tuning video at some point. The batter head is the top head on the drum. The bottom head is called a resonant head.

Beautiful sounding kit! I prefer Evans G12 for a batter head, but G2s are super nice too. That mahogany is so nice on the inside of the shells. And are those the MDD or MCD pedals you’re using?
Thank you! I really love the tone of the cherry and mahogany together. It’s a good blend of attack and low end. I’m using the MDD pedals.
@@drumminjc Very welcome! Yeah there’s something really special about their cherry/mahogany shells, they sound great with any tuning and pretty much any head. Excellent pedal choice too! I can’t get away from the feel of direct drives, and DW takes the cake in my opinion. I don’t even play metal or anything, but direct drive is like an extension of your foot, love the MDD to death.

What happened to the custom DW kit? I like the idea of the SM27s on the floor toms. I have three KSM27s that I always wanted to try on the toms, but I didn't have anything else for overheads. ☹️😄 I haven't played my drums in like 7 years - it's good to see you still at it. #drummerocd
They’re setup in the other half of my drum room. I’ve got 3 DW kits now 😬. The 27’s are real clean and translate the low end very well. I’ve noticed. I keep going back to your channel from time to time watching some of your old videos. I hope to see some more playing from you soon and glad to see you’re still around!

Shure Beta 98AD/C on the rack toms, Shure SM27’s on the floor toms.
I always did think the evans coated hydro was a nice choice on a metal snare

It’s a lacquer paint and not a wrap. It was exclusive to Cymbalfusion.

I bought them from 1aauto.com several years ago and had a local body shop paint them for me. These are actually wired for the 04-06 f150’s. I no longer have this truck though and sold it a couple of months ago and purchased a 23 super duty.

They sound as awesome as they look! I am curious what kind of interface or preamp you use to handle all of those mics into a mix. I only use edrums currently but getting interested in mic'ing up my old acoustics
