The greatest movement teachers do not know what they are doing. But improvisation must be at the core of everything they do. Students often demand that you teach something that will certify them! But good teachers refuse. To be adept at failure and trance, to embrace not knowing, nourish risk taking, and enter the battle without armor or a plan--separating your body from your story, abandon the quest for motivation, the most important person in the world is the one right in front of you.

For the record (in case I ever run for office or a job looks at this) - the scene in which I ask a vendor for a date was indeed improvised, but the cue from the director for this scene was that I in fact fancied the vendor and was trying to romance her. This was not something I would do in real life!!!

One of the best weeks of theatre practice exploration I've ever undertaken was about twenty years ago with this feller. Thank you for this amazing interview.

Keith was my teacher at Queen's Kingston 1974 1975. Best teacher ever. Uncommon sense. He helped shape my success in various non-acting careers. Essential learning for anyone dealing with the public or an audience.

Remarkable that it's something obvious can be so elusive. Most people think his work on status is about taking behaviors...but here he reveals that his status work is about the relationship. If it's not about relationship it becomes body language. Thanks for this interview.
