DIY Tear Drop Part 12 - Installing the Electrical System
Another great project down, we are working on the electrical system for this trailer. I was able to get the bulk of the wiring ran while I was building the trailer so that the wires were hidden behind all of the wall panels. In this video we are adding the final components to the system with a 100aH AGM battery, 6 gang fuse block, and a Renogy solar charger. Next video we will be doing the cooler and finishing up the back end of the trailer before we make doors.

    Nice fabrication work. I run over a lot of brush and trees on my overgrown 180 acres of Alabama. Small trees try to spring up between the bumper and the tire, eventually smashing the fenders in until anything is strong enough to get in between your tire and your frame. Same between all wheels and the rock sliders too. Could ignore the rear, but I make my own trails and that requires backing up sometimes. The other thing is large branches or leaning trees that ride up over the hood and hit the windshield, so you need a smooth guide that picks it up from the bull bar and smoothly lifts it to the roof rack. This is done slowly so the forces aren't impact, but I need to push stuff out of my way without getting out in all the sticker bushes. It kind of looks like yours is optimized as a roll cage, which I personally don't need, other than I sometimes knock down a small tree that's holding up a big tree that fell long ago. If I don't notice, I get some pretty big stuff falling on my cab. I never go fast, I'm too busted up to take the beating, so I'm not a rollover risk, which makes me think I could save some metal in that area, over the type of off-road I used to do.

    I had a good alignment shop in my area replace the front upper control arms (bushings were cracked) and install new shocks (Bilstein 5100 with the adjustable leveling rings) a month ago for my 2011 F150 FX4. They leveled the truck, but It’s still slightly nose down, just not nearly as raked as it was from the factory. I then got new tires (Falken Wildpeak A/T4w replacing worn out Bridgestone Dueler Revo 2s of the same size) and had the truck aligned again to give myself a headstart on Houston potholes ( the camber is slightly negative). At low speeds and bumps the new suspension and tires are great but I'm disappointed in the highway driving performance. The truck requires a lot of driver attention to keep it on track compared to previously. I have to make small adjustments as if the steering is loose. It's tiring. Has anyone else had this issue when they leveled their F150 of this era with the Bilsteins?

    • @kdcarver
      @kdcarver Před měsícem

      UPDATE: After 3 alignments, a balance, and a rotation, it turns out the problem was with the Wildpeaks. Falken provided a concession and exchanged for a Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo 3 set. Exponentially better performance on the road. The new tires feel stable and firm without being rough. I'm impressed by Falken's customer service, but unfortunately, they need to work out some kinks with the Wildpeak AT4Ws, in my opinion.

    Looks great Jake! Did you ever consider in-floor storage boxes near the side door? I always wanted shallow storage, maybe 6-8 inches deep, just for light stuff? Seemed it would have been a great addition for quick access dry storage for the mundane things one might need to get to quickly. Looking forward to seeing your fender buildout and remaining work.

    • @Legacy4x4andOffRoadYT
      @Legacy4x4andOffRoadYT Před 3 měsíci

      I did consider in floor storage and ultimately decided against it due to my time constraints on this build. You can most certainly do it if you have more time. The way I built this the mattress sits directly on top of the floor and eats up all of the available space. If I were to do anything under it I would have to move the mattress every time to access whatever is there, and I did not want to have any more external doors than I already have for ease of waterproofing. That front storage box that I built in is very large and has plenty of room for stuff and I am planning on making some organizers for it to make access easier. The rear sections will have three easy access doors for coolers, batteries, and camp equipment. We will see how it does during this trip and there may be some modifications on future builds.

    • @Shadowfletch
      @Shadowfletch Před 3 měsíci

      With a sharp enough turn (90 degrees) do you have to worry about the back of your vehicle hitting the angled tubes attached to the receiver hitch?

    • @Legacy4x4andOffRoadYT
      @Legacy4x4andOffRoadYT Před 3 měsíci

      Hey the total center tube was 12ft long, it is an 8ft trailer and a 4ft tongue which I found to be the best for the size. You can certainly use 1x1 to make the gussets not necessary to use the plate like that. Honestly those plates are probably overkill especially if you follow along with the rest of teh build by the time you get all the uprights in and everything else this trailer is very very rigid. I am not worried about jackknifing while towing, with a four foot tongue there is plenty of space to turn about. Of course with any bumper pull trailer there is always a risk of that but it is far more common during reversing than it is during normal driving.

  • @MaddMango
    @MaddMango Před 4 měsíci

    I'm not a welder. When I built my 5x8 I went with a sandwiched wall design. 1/4" interior plywood, 1x2 internal framing with 1/2 solid foam between, and 1/8" exterior skins (all construction adhesive bonded and screwed). Super light weight side and top panels. Fiberglass and resin over exterior for weather protection. I think my trailer came in at just around 950lb empty. I really need to learn to weld. A note on your galley hatch, I hope you have better sealing success than I did. It was a bear to achieve. I wish I had gone with just a simple square and flat back, provides easier sealing and a larger "awning" for the galley. Great work! I think you'll want windows on both sides for cross ventilation, but I'm in Florida and we have slightly different temps/humidity here.

    • @Legacy4x4andOffRoadYT
      @Legacy4x4andOffRoadYT Před 4 měsíci

      I strongly considered that type of design but ultimately decided this would work better for me with my skill set. Thank you for the tip on the rear hatch, i think i have a plan for sealing the hatch but time will tell. And for cross ventilation I defintely considered adding more windows and I put the steel in the frame in case I want to add one in the future but for now I am going to be doing just one window on the door and the fan vent in the roof. I will mostly be camping in the Northern US in VA/PA and out west in Wyoming/Montana
