What happens when you leave the garden unattended?
zhlédnutí 99Před měsícem
In this video, I'm showing you the before & after of our small backyard garden when we left it alone for 7 whole days! We went on vacation for a week with no one to help tend our garden. Lots of rain was in the forecast for Houston, TX & we have a smart sprinkler system so we felt the garden would be okay with water. But bugs are a huge issue for us as well as a few animals - specifically ducks...

I'm breaking down what I believe are the top 5 things you need to think about BEFORE you start your garden. I go into detail about why these things are important based on my experience. The items we're talking about today are at a higher level than how to grow specific herbs, veggies, fruits, and flowers but certainly do impact what you grow & how. I hope this video encourages you start plannin...
Battling the heat AND the bugs in the summer garden #zone9a
zhlédnutí 143Před 2 měsíci
The summer garden is bittersweet in SE TX. If the heat doesn't beat us, severe weather will. if it's not either of those, it's the bugs. Last time we were gone for a long weekend the birds are all the tomatoes. This time was just 3 days and BOOM... heat (even though we watered) & bugs had a party! Glad they had fun because now it's time to bounce back & grow more! Thanks so much for watching & ...

Nice 😊. Good tips🤗💚
Pruning out the lower foot or so of branches off the mainstem of a plant is "lollipopping" : "Whooping" your okra involves firmly tapping (or "whooping") the mainstem to promote manual pollination when they're struggling to fruit. I have NO DOUBT everything will bounce back JUST FINE with the care you put into your garden... Plus, it's lowkey pretty exciting to be distracted for a few days and to come back to a FLOURISHING garden -- even if there's a bit of cleanup in the aftermath and a few fires to put out. I got a LOTTA NERVE tho' because I am NOT built to contend with vineborers. They will make Me THROW IN THE TOWEL!!! 😵💫Them AND their 'lil ivory goo just TickMeAWFF! I've been gardening over a decade, but I KNEW I wasn't about that vineborer life!!! LAST YEAR though, I thought I'd give it a shot and try My hand at (round) zucchini AND IF THEM THANGS DIDN'T CALL MY BLUFF!!!! I got TWO fruit off the plant (one on each) before they took them down.... "NeverSayNever," but -- NEVER AGAIN! lol I can tell your space is GORGEOUS when tended (and apparently, enough so that it maintains its beauty even when you've been away). Happy Gardening 2024!
New subscriber here you have an adorable personality
Aww thank you SO much. You have no idea how much that means to me 🥰
Bleeding red amaranth grow like a weed in my garden plot 😊 I’m super lucky 🍀 ❤
You ARE lucky. They're such beautiful edibles
Rabbit and turtle eat tomatoes..
@rebeccaselvage9211 seems everything eats the tomatoes in my garden. Even our doggie, which I don't recommend.
I tie different size organza bags over my tomato clusters to protect them from pest damage once the fruit has formed. Maybe try something like that 🤎
Agreed. After I lost these 2 I started tying them off with reusable mesh produce bags. Definitely works. I didn't think about organza bags - I have a ton of those. Thanks
@4thHouseOnTheRight of course! I know how disappointing it can be to harvest fruits you been waiting on and an animal gets to it first.
Sorry don't mean to be rude if you already know typically if birds are pecking at your tomatoes they want the water from the tomatoes a way to counter it is a bird bath. They prefer the birdbath but you can absolutely pick them a tad bit early and let ripen in window like some of your comments mention
I literally just replied to another comment saying this very thing. Thank you!
Pick your tomatoes at 50% ripe.
Yes, great point. This happened while we were away for a long weekend. A lot happens in the garden in 3-4 days.
Means that they were good and who knows with any luck youll notice tomato plants starting to pop up all over the place
Oh yah, I didn't even think about that. The bird will do the sowing for me!

Dam birds fucked up some of your fixinz
Hilarious 😆
our main problem was our chickens but we fenced in an area outside for them this year…hopefully other critters don’t go for the taking
I’m pretty sure you can eat most if not everything you grow from the garden raw lol
Pretty much. I think many people don't know know this, especially if they're not gardeners
Okra is a type of nightshade
I don't think so. I can never correctly spell the family but it's something like malvacae. Not solanaceae. But why do you mention it?
Birds, deer and chipmunks ! Haha guess they’re hungry too
I read somewhere that it's because they're hot & thirsty. So I think I'll try to lure them away with a DIY birdbath
I did not know that about okra. And I have 4 okra plants growing right now. So guess what I'm going to try soon 😊 Silly birds 🐦 🐦⬛
Looks delicious
Thank you 😋
