Awesome tree. I have a few JBP’s in my garden. They’re a lot younger. I haven’t done the bud selection yet. Did your tree always live in a pot or grow pot? Or, was it temporarily “field grown”? I up-potted my first JBP seedling a couple of times. Currently it’s growing in a 10 quart terracotta pot. Doing well, needs a little more work though.

Have you heard of Tom Vuong upside-down olives, he digs the roots out aswell, then cuts the lignatuber in half score 45° the wound, plants the roots upside down and gets 2 tree's from one. Great specimen. I gathered a few slightly smaller ones near a pine plantation up near Mansfield, Victoria. They have been chewed in by deer which has added to their stunted gnarly look. They all survived their transplant well. There is one there that would be thicker but shorter and more bent than your specimen. I cut half the roots this year and will go back and get it next spring2025. It will be an amazing soecimen that i suspect will be a life long project .

I have been busy repotting; I have been listening to your podcasts as I have been working. well, I was trying to remove a useless root (listening to one about making decisions,) should have used a sharper tool. (that too was another podcast I have listen to lately about sharpening) Jammed the finger it is still hurting 3 hours later. as soon as I did it was only yesterday, I listen to pain and injuries and laughed at some of the things you mention

Just wanted to say big fan love the podcast listen to it daily and often back to the start for all the sage advice you give us..I know you don’t post many videos but its always a nice bonus when you do..( came to see the 4 way tie in)..keep it going as we need you in the bonsai world..lots of bonsai love from the UK (also how do you get your sphagnum moss that fine?, in a blender?, I spend ages chopping it up with scissors or a knife! 😅

If I remember correctly. Needle plucking is only done when you have the final basic branch structure you want? Not counting the outer, younger small branches at the end of each branch.

Great transformation, I think that you should reduce that large jin, just by opinion. Have a very similar procumbens in a large grow box for past 5 years and will be looking to start styling this year. Thanks for the inspiration! Awesome episode! Question for you. When talking about soil, would you use the same mix for a tree that’s in development or change it to something that’s more organic and not so porous? I feel like the soil mix you mentioned would be better for a tree that’s already developed and in its refinement stage. I’m trying to focus on growth, longer roots, root thickening and trunk thickening.

Hey Scott. I was the one who asked about the White Pine that was used as the demonstration. My aim was to understand the history of the tree as that information is very attractive to me. I agree with the translator on age but that was just 1 part of my question. I did get the history from the original owner and it made that tree so much more attractive to me. Great stuff as always. Really wanting to get in to repotting, but the mornings are so frosty, the trees are coming out like ice blocks. I've been trying to line up the next few against the side of the house over night to help them.
