The reason for learning Ancient Greeks is that we come with direct contact with the people whose thoughts, actions , behaviour, experiences and words, literally developed and evolved the human brain. As a result, those people were civilized and passed their civilization onto other contemprary ( to them) and subsequents generations. That is, people in general democratized, educated and spiritualized..Unraveling the ball of thread of human spirituality and observing it from its very beginning, we are able to remember and re-consider why and how have evolved..Remebering and reconsidering are both vital for our well being and existence, because we people tend to forget..And if we allow to ourselves to forget we feel lost and confused!

There is freedom in Jesus Christ!! He breaks the chains of sin, gives people new life and freedom from the power of death. "Jesus answered them and said 'Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave to sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore, if the son makes you free then you shall be free indeed.' " John 8:34-36

I had 4 years of classical Greek in college and 2 years in seminary. I love reading the New Testament in the original. You pickup so many nuances that are hard to convey. Some bible translations go for thought for thought and some do word for word. The later are better for study by non greek readers.

Aside from the cultural stuff, one rather practical point that is hardly ever made is what a boon a knowledge of classical Greek (and Latin) is if you are studying medicine, as it gives you a huge leg-up with the vast amount of terminology you need to learn. At uni I astonished a medical student mate who was grumbling about all the complicated names for things he had to memorise, by accurately deducing what a "salpingogram" was, despite never having heard the term before.

I am Greek and intended to follow mathematics or physics at school, but around 15, when we started learning ancient greek and most of all, when i was taught Thucydides' Peloponnesian war from the original, it was love at first sight and there was no turning back. Today i am so happy that i learned ancient Greek because as Helen points out, there are so many texts i can access. The most amazing thing is this feeling when i come across something that seems so modern and yet it's stated there in something that was perceived 2,500 years ago. Like in Plato's Republic, when one character of the dialogue, Cephalos, tells Socrates that most people live their life as they please and don't worry about the afterlife, that is not until they reach an old age. Then they start thinking if there really is afterlife and whether they will be punished for their wrong doings. But he, Cephalos, thinks he has always lived justly and he has nothing to worry about (and yet people of that time knew that Cephalos, a real person living in Athens around 420 bc, had a sad and very unjust death...)

The Greek language is NOT at the heart of this civilisation. It IS the heart of this civilisation. There is a lot to say, but I will mention only one thing that is interesting to me. The ban of teaching the Greek language, even from Greeks to Greeks, for 400 years during the ottoman occupation constitutes the biggest crime against civilisation ever. So big that it will still require justice until the day justice achieved.

    • @faithlesshound5621

Colonial powers often banned languages. Examples in recent times include sign language in schools for deaf children, the native languages of Canada and Australia in mission schools, Ukrainian until the October revolution, Kurdish in Turkey. Before the war the US government discouraged the speaking of indigenous French and German dialects in its territory. Many of the new nation states of the 19th century repressed minority languages. We don't know for sure if the Christian emperors of Rome stopped the teaching of Etruscan, Egyptian and Akkadian when they banned teaching by non-Christians.

@@pg_storyman5873 it is the form of language that was spoken by the educated people in the time of the revolution of 1821, that was later adopted officially by the state. It is derived directly from the language that was spoken at the time of the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Essentially, after the Turkish conquest the then spoken language falled into a decadent state because of the extended illiteracy that followed it, while the very few educated people inside the Ottoman empire (usually clergymen, priests) and the diaspora, continued to use the language as before, so they retained it "clean" (this is what Kathareuousa means) . I made this comment because I assumed he speaks the modern demotic variant, which is the one that you should start.

The Greek alphabet is not that hard. I had to learn it in fourth grade. The associated project was to produce a short story written in English, but transliterated into Greek letters. This stood me in good stead decades later when I decided to learn Koine Greek so I could read he New Testament in the original language. However, some time later, I was faced with the necessity of remedying the damage when an artist taking part in a festival for which I was producing the English version of the program book presented a translation of a text in Attic Greek that was of such poor quality that it would stick out like a sore thumb compared to the other texts we were translating ourselves. So... I redid the translation myself. I had to use an analytical dictionary to sort out the inflection, but once I had that taken care of, most of the vocabulary was pretty familiar, and I was able to carry out the translation. But no, I don't speak or write either Attic or Koine at this point. I am hoping to remedy that in due time :)

Another thing I can think of that might work is to find out the names of household objects in Greek, put the written forms on Post-It notes and, well, post them around your house. Try to find obects that will cover as many of the letters as possible. Then when you are going about your business, you can look at the Post-Its and say the names written on them, with the writing actually in front of you.

Hello, I am half Greek and have just basic knowledge of modern Greek, but just recently I have had a strong desire and interest in ancient Greek. I feel a lot of enthusiasm and excitement about the prospect of learning it. I have always had a great reverence for the ancient Greek culture and heritage and I've always had curiosity about the ancient language, but just recently it changed from being some very inconceivable concept, to I've been thinking of ways in which I could truly learn the ancient language. It was also an unexpected thing when you made the comment at the end about "with the era of technology we're living in we can do this together". The thought that I could have contact with you and others like you is absolutely wonderful! My approach to ancient Greek has changed from being distant, it's changed into me devising ways to actually learn. If you are willing to have contact/correspondence with a fellow "lover of all things Greek" although I have currently limited knowledge, I would greatly welcome that with open arms!! And I would have immense gratitude indeed.
