    I wish all schools had these. Hearing aids help, but are not cure alls. We as educators need to be aware of the symptoms of hearing problems. When a child is constantly looking around the room or not putting their books away until they notice everyone else has done so, that is a red flag. When you loose their attention as you move toward the sides and/or back of the room that is another red flag. If the child is constantly straining to understand speech unless it is very loud, that is a red flag. The way my parents found out I have a hearing problem was this: My 1st grade teacher was very observant and noticed that when they moved to either side and/or the back of the room, they lost my attention. If they stayed front and center, they always had it. They recommended that my hearing be tested. If it were not for this person, I would not be the successful person I am today. If you suspect your child is having a hearing problem, here's a simple test: Wait until your child is really interested in an activity they really enjoy then walk up and clap your hands close to them. If they are startled, that's good, if not, have their hearing checked by a certified audiologist.

    There are many reasons students are powerless. Students are powerless when the adults ignore them or avoid doing anything that takes extra effort or training (such as putting on an FM system), when they are self-conscious when there is an incredible amount of information that has been said already, and it would seem impossible to get it back, and they would be disrupting the class, or interrupting the teacher and seem rude. What can a student do when they have asked the teacher many times, both in the classroom and outside, including notes, to use the technology and the teacher ignores them. The school keeps saying it is the student's responsibility to say when he/she has difficulty hearing and the teacher is not using the technology. The problem is the student was told to say "repeat that please" when he can't hear (aside from the technology being used) instead of the teachers using the technology and making sure the auditory quality in the classroom is good,. It is the whole time the teacher or other students are talking, The teacher hesitates with the interruption, may repeat one sentence, and then just keeps going. His SLP has tried to intervene on his behalf, but no change.

    I wish I had one of these when I was in grade school. People automatically assume that hearing aids correct the problem but it doesn't. That's why it's called a hearing aid. It helps but our hearing is not fully restored. I didn't know of FM systems until I was in graduate school. There are so many children with hearing loss who are at a disadvantage because people are not aware of these things. People assume we are not paying attention but we just don't hear everything that's going on and the classroom is the worst listening environment there is.

    I was intrigued to hear the two examples given in the video of students with hearing loss. The FM system is a great piece of technology to utilize for students with hearing impairment. The video was clear that it is important to read the clues the student gives to make sure the student's FM system is working correctly. It is pointless to have this technology if it is not used correctly. Like the video suggested, as teachers we can not rely on the student telling us if there is a problem.

  • @4boys249
    @4boys249 Před 10 lety

    I thought this was a very interesting video. I learned what FM system was and I think that a lot of teachers should view this video so that they would know how it looks to not pay attention to a student that is hearing impaired. I did not like the way the teacher forgot to turn on the FM system nor did like the way he did not repeat the other students questions so that the hearing impaired student could responded he did not even call on the student when he was raising his hand.

  • @JM-kf1ki
    @JM-kf1ki Před 10 lety

    I thought that it really interesting to have learned about the FM technology. It amazes me that there is technology that can assist the hearing impaired in such a meaningful way. Learning about this technology also made me realize the importance of (in North Carolina, at least) the individual aids that go around to different classrooms with students with hearing impairments. Special attention needs to be paid to these students to make that their technology assistance is working properly.

  • @omalley6278
    @omalley6278 Před 10 lety

    This video was great at explaining what a child hears when they have hearing loss. It is so important for the teacher and the student to communicate with each other when the technology devices are not working or working poorly. I also think that every classroom needs a mike to pass around the classroom so the child with the hearing loss can hear his classmates. That is so important for social interaction.
