Botham was an underrated batsman and an overrated bowler. He had lot of potential as a batman which could never be exploited.

English bowlers got a real pasting, tremendous hitting, Jayasuriya style counterattack. When I was in school, Mendis and Roy Dias were very popular from Sri Lanka.

Mendis was a key figure for Sri Lanka to gain test status. Unfortunately when they got it his best days were almost over and Sri Lanka didn't get enough international matches for them to prosper

Ian Botham hooked for 3 sixes in an over by Mendidls. How often did Botham get hooked for sixes? So many times. You really wonder what his bowling average was after the Packer players came back into international cricket. He raced to 100 wickets very fast but his last 200 or do wickets likely came at a much higher average and high strike rate. Even on seaming wickets such as Headingly, he would take wickets but be expensive. I recall Imran Khan hooking him out of the ground in 1982. So many of Imran's boundaries were hooks of Botham on a seaming track. Duleep Mendis and the Sri Lankans approached batting like the West Indians. Roy Dias was as high a calibre batsman as I have seen.

Mendis and Dias were world class batsmen. Their careers were at the tail end when SL got test status and they got chances to play international cricket regularly. Prime Mendis and Dias would have been fun to watch!
