Camper Conversion Critique: One Year On
Being just over a year since we started converting our Peugeot Expert Tepee WAV into Erica-the-Campervan, Mick and I sat down to chat about what we would consider doing differently.

This is an add-on to the Camper Tour video, where I forgot to show the underfloor storage area, in the small space where the wheelchair ramp used to be.

Peugeot Expert Camper Conversion - Window Tinting
zhlédnutí 1,7KPřed 3 lety
Many months after we finished our camper conversion, and after a few trips that highlighted how beneficial it would be to reduce the visibility of inside when viewed from outside, we finally got around to tinting the windows. I wanted to give the tinting a go myself, but fully expected it to go badly, to try one window, throw my toys out of the pram at my inability to achieve a good result, and...
Peugeot Expert Camper Conversion - Part 17: Costs
zhlédnutí 6KPřed 3 lety
I recorded this weeks ago then life got a bit manic and I didn't get around to posting it. Better late than never! This one's all about the numbers. I get to the headlines reasonably quickly so you don't have to sit through all the detail that follows if you don't want to (although skip to the end for an example of the sort of wittering I have to contend with in the editing!).

Peugeot Expert Camper Conversion - Part 15: in which Erica becomes a campervan!
zhlédnutí 4,9KPřed 3 lety
The conversion of Erica from patient transfer vehicle to campervan really seemed to accelerate over the last couple of weeks. It's not that we spent any more time working on her but because the most recent tasks (like finishing the sofa/bed) were so visible and turned Erica into a functional campervan. There's still a need for flooring and curtains, and there are other less visible minor tasks ...
Peugeot Expert Camper Conversion - Part 14: Connecting the Electrics
zhlédnutí 3KPřed 3 lety
We're now rapidly trundling towards the end of the conversion of Erica, our Peugeot Expert Tepee Camper Conversion. It was back in August, in Part 5 of this series, that I ran the first fix of wiring. With the heater and battery installed, it was now finally time to connect the whole electrical system. That involved three days* largely spent kneeling on the floor, but it was work that provided ...
Peugeot Expert Camper Conversion - Part 13: Diesel Heater
zhlédnutí 6KPřed 3 lety
Oh dear! This is a video of very questionable quality. Sorry about the wind on the mic and the shaky camera. They're always a feature of my videos, but this one's worse than most. In this video we fit a 2kW Chinese Diesel heater. The first lesson (and a major one) we learnt along the way is that where you want to put your diesel heater isn't necessarily where it's going to end up. In our case t...
Peugeot Expert Camper Conversion - Part 12: Changing the passenger seat/installing a swivel
zhlédnutí 19KPřed 3 lety
In this video we remove Erica's double front passenger seat and replace it with a single, then fit a swivel base to it. The removal of the old and fitting of the new were quick and straight forward tasks, but we were then held up significantly by the issue of the connector for the third seat belt. The fitting of the swivel was also an easy task, although we made it far less so due to a false st...
Peugeot Expert Tepee Camper Conversion - Part 11: Completing the Kitchen
zhlédnutí 4,2KPřed 3 lety
Erica has a kitchen! This is exciting progress, even though it has taken many more hours than expected to achieve (I work on the basis that all construction takes twice as long as my initial estimate; this took waaaaay more than that!)
Peugeot Expert Tepee Camper Conversion - Part 10: Kitchen Carcass, Gas Locker and Smev Sink/Hob
zhlédnutí 4,1KPřed 3 lety
We're not doing this build in a logical or consistent order! We started the kitchen whilst we were waiting for parts to arrive to allow us to do the things that should have been done first. It then went on hold for a couple of weeks whilst we returned to those things (like the solar and ceiling installation as shown in Part 9 of this series) but since then it has been full steam ahead. In this ...
Peugeot Expert Tepee Camper Conversion - Part 9: Solar and Insulation
zhlédnutí 4,1KPřed 3 lety
The solar panel had become a bit of a saga and was holding us up inside too. We finally got it fitted, which then allowed us to insulate the roof and get the header liner back in.
Peugeot Expert Tepee Camper Conversion - Part 8 - Wheelchair Ramp Removal
zhlédnutí 13KPřed 3 lety
Erica was a wheelchair accessible vehicle when we bought her, and her ramp had proved handy until this week, when it became an impediment to the building of the gas locker. We thus bit the bullet and took an angle grinder to her ramp.
Peugeot Expert Tepee Camper Conversion - Part 7 - Carpeting the Camper's Walls
zhlédnutí 3,9KPřed 4 lety
This one is mainly the carpeting of the walls, where Mick got a bit carried away and covered more than we'd intended. However, we had enough carpet and the end result looks good, even if large parts of it are going to be covered with furniture. There wasn't much I could do whilst Mick was carpeting, although I did finish off the boxing/insulation of the nearside rear wheel arch, and once he'd f...

Please will you post a link for the manufacturer of the swivel base. Thank you so much for an informative video.
Your videos have made me reconsider buying a WAV. I was wondering, if you don't mind answering. Did your insurance change after removing the ramp?
Thanks for the valuable info, Gayle, which I am using to refit my Peugeot Expert, so mostly similar. Just a suggestion, but soundtrack damaged with unmuffled wind noise might be re-edited with a clean voice overlay ?
Great channel! I am thinking about converting a wheelchair accessible vehicle - and I wondered has the reduced clearance under the vehicle because of the ramp trough caused you any issues? thanks!
Hi Gayle I no it's a long shot but how did you get the 3rd seatbelt mechanism out,an at a point where am stumped
Hi just starting my adventure. Where did you buy your swivel from ???
Hi just found you. I am looking at a teepee tomorrow. What's your experience with the mechanics of the van. Has it been reliable ? Fuel hungry ? I too am looking at the WAV version any regrets about choosing that over the standard van ?? Cheers.
Hello. JUST WATCHED ALL YOUR VIDS ON THIS LOVELY EXPERT TEPEE. BRILLIANT REALLY ENJOYED. JUST WONDERING IF YOU COULD GIVE A LITTLE ADVICE. IM MUCH IN THE SAME BUDGET BRACKET AS YOU, AND WANT TO DO LIKEWISE. PLEASE COULD YOU TELL ME WHICH AUCTION SITE YOU BOUGHT FROM. NEVER HAVING DONE AN AUCTION BUY ITS QUITE REASSURING TO SEE YOU GOT AN AMAZING BARGAIN. SO WOULD LIKE TO START THERE IF YOU DON'T MIND PASSING THAT INFO ON. IF YOU DO THEN I APOLOGISE FOR ASKING. ANYWHO LOOKING FORWARD TO MANY MORE OF YOUR VLOGS. THANKYOU. OH AND WISHING YOU A FANTASTIC TIME WITH YOUR NEAR NEW CAMPER VEHICLE. .KIND REGARDS BRI N SUE
Thank you. Theres a video that shows how to unplug the blue connector. Its still tricky though. The red part unclips out but easily breaks.

Hi Gayle, I know it’s been a few years, but just wondering how the swivel plate has been in that time? Looking to do my passenger seat in my expert! Thank you!
Hiya Gayle and Mike. I finished my conversion with the same van. Used a lot of your ideas. Almost the same issues as you but they aree very liveable. it's a great van. Thanks for your videos and information! Carl.
Hiya Gayle. I completed my conversion on the same van and used a lot of your video information. Thank you for making the videos! Carl.
Cracking! Love the handles
under 2m . good thinking!
You do know you don't have to cut the ramp it just unbolts and you can still have keep the bottom half.
Hi I am doing the same conversion can I ask what quantities of insulation and sound deading did you buy?
Only a short one but worth a thumbs up.
Buy airbag resistor bypass off eBay, they are a couple of pound and you just plug them in and it will put the airbag light out and you won’t have to have a third person seatbelt under your seat👍
Came here to learn about this! Is there a particular one we need do you know? There are so many different models on eBay!
Did you go for petrol /diesel/LPG?
Very informative videos thank you. Did you check with the insurance company before buying Erica that it was ok to take everything out and also which insurance company did you choose please? Told by car sales people if its converted by a mobility company on the log book a d no longer says Peugeot etc it can't be de-wavved. Looking this week!
Very useful video. I am about to do the exact same to the same model of Peugeot expert, except the single seat I have is another driver's seat. One question I am worried about: Did you disconnect the battery before disconnecting the seat, or is it ok to disconnect the existing seat with the battery still connected but the ignition off?
We didn't disconnect the battery, but did have the ignition off...until we turned the ignition on and got an air bag error come up. We feared an error code would need to be cleared, but as soon as we plugged the old Seat 3 seat belt in, the error went away (yep, still driving around with the third seat belt sitting under the seat 3 years later!). Probably best not to turn the ignition on until you're done, though. All the best.
Thank you. This is good to know.
great videos, just started converting a partner can i ask what dimensions are your bed and kitchen
I'm afraid I can only half answer your question at the moment as I'm not in the same country as Erica just now, so can't go and measure. The bed/sofa base is 1700mm long (the toilet provides and effective extension on one side) and the kitchen is 1500mm long. What I don't know off the top of my head is how deep they are. The base of the sofa is 600mm deep, but I can't remember how wide it is in bed mode. Sorry not to be more help!
@@GayleEBird Hi thanks for getting back to me, no problem, enjoy your travelling
where did you store your spare wheel .i have the same van thankyou
90 degree seat back is impossible. 20 degree is optimal.
👌✋👍
Lovely. I'm considering a WAV with a similar ramp 'drop down' slot and wondering about my options - cover over or what have you. This is ingenious.
Do you or anyone know if the seats from a Peugeot 807 will fit the Expert/Citreon/Scudo?
Hi 👋 I'm looking at converting a wheelchair accessible vehicle myself and have stubbled on what to do about the spare wheel. What solution did you come up with or did you decide not to have with one?
Really enjoyed watching the build from start to finish. Great result for the total spend. Well done!
Really great summary Gayle and now leads me on to taking a look at your other videos - very professional no waffle summary - very much appreciated, as currently planning my own conversion 👍👍
How did you do the roof lining and what does it look like now thanks laura
Nice job
Hi Gayle and Mick. I watched this series of your Expert conversion before I found my own Expert. Now I’ve just watched them all again. Thank you so much for taking the time to post all these videos showing the process inc pros and cons. I really appreciate having a better insight now that I am about to embark on my conversion. I especially like the change of passenger seat - but as you say they are like hen’s teeth to find! Anyway thanks again.
Hi Gayle great videos. Are your engine battery terminals quick release? If so how did you connect the split relay cable to the engine battery terminal?
They're not quick release connectors on the engine battery, but standard bolt on. I connected the VSR cables to the same studs as the engine battery cables, using the same type/size of ring connectors.
Hi Gayle, I’m just about to start the exact same conversion, can you tell me if I have to change the use on the insurance to camper/day van. Really enjoying the series so far, you have shown me what to look out for
I insured it from the outset as a campervan, initially with an 'under conversion' endorsement on the policy, which was removed when we completed the work. Some policies require you to update the insurer every time you add another item to the conversion, but my policy only required me to tell them when I had completed work and what the final value was. Hope your conversion is going well.
Great job nice finish, just one little question where do you keep your spare wheel for the van?
Thank you! Our spare wheel is currently sitting in our back garden ... which isn't particularly useful should we get a flat when out and about! The conclusion we've reached is that there's nowhere we can possibly put a spare (can't go underneath because of the lowered floor; can't go inside because it would take up too much room), so we've got one of those 'fill it with sticky sludge, pump it up' emergency tyre repair kits and some breakdown cover.
Super video - I have a 2014 Citroen Dispatch Combi(same as the Expert) that we use as an occasional camper - the front middle seat is too small now for our kids to use so the idea of swapping this out for a swivel base is very appealing. Your video made it clear that this is actually doable and not too difficult(especially when you have the instructions/diagram!). The problem will be in sourcing a single seat I imagine.
Gayle...you are a Godsend! Just about to embark on this whole process with my 2012 Tepee...will be watching avidly! 👀 😁
I really don't get the idea of having a toilet in any camper-vehicle, nevermind in a miniscule vehicle like this.
Each to their own. That's the beauty of designing and building your own isn't it: you can put in it what you choose.
Just a quick question, how long is your kitchen unit? The van is amazing, you should both be very proud of what you have achieved 👏
Thank you! Sorry if my reply is too late to be of use to you, but our kitchen unit is 1500mm long.
@@GayleEBird Don't worry we haven't started the build yet. Thanks for replying, hope you have a great summer in the van 👍
Love your conversion! I think this is a normal size wheelbase, not the long wheel base right? How long is your space in the back?
Thank you! Yes, it is the standard wheel base. The long version would certainly have been advantageous when it came to fitting the gas locker in between the wheel arch and the tailgate! The distance between the front seat bases and the tailgate is approximately 2.3mm. To allow for the front seats to slide/recline, slightly less than that is usable for furniture.
@@GayleEBird thanks for your reply! In the current market it is difficult to find a LWB so going for a SWB probably. Good to know we need some space for the swivel seat.
Hey - have you still got the yellow grab handles & if so do you want to sell them? We have the same vehicle as I am wheelchair bound but the grab handles by the sliding doors would help my partner get into the back with me easier. Cheers ears!! Kay
Which auction did you get your peugeot van from? I think that was an excellent price considering it already had the lowered floor.
Sorry for the delay replying. We bought from British Car Auctions.
Hi Gayle, I just bought the same van and I've got the spare wheel into the van... I need to find it a place, where have you got yours??
Sorry for the delay replying. In case my answer is still relevant: Our spare wheel is currently sitting in our back garden ... which isn't particularly useful should we get a flat when out and about!
Thank you both for sharing your journey with us. I found you because I am just buying a Peugeot partner but it is a bit older older than yours but I need to remove the mobility stuff at the back and was very interested to see what you had done in your conversion to although mine will probably be a lot more basic 😀
Hi Gayle, I've just gotten myself a tepee for conversion and your series has been really useful. I was just wondering on this video, theoretically, would it be possible to remove the raised sections of the floor down to the base of the vehicle to offer additional height across the whole living area? Thanks!
The 'raised' parts of the floor are the original floor of the vehicle, and they sit on the chassis members. The middle section is a cut-out between the chassis members, into which a trough has been welded. So, no, it wouldn't be possible to lower the whole floor.
@@GayleEBird thanks a lot for the quick response Gayle, really appreciate it. So I guess the two options are work the trough in go a design as you yourselves did or level the trough out to the rest of the vehicle with a floor on top?
I bought a silver 2012 Expert earlier today and I'm buzzing watching all the stuff on CZcams about camperising them! Just found your channel now but it's time to sleep 😴 I've subscribed and will pick it up tomorrow! Hi from Ireland 🇮🇪
Hope you have a good time doing the conversion, and many happy trips!
Hiya, do you think the sound deadening is absolutely necessary?
No, personally I don't think it's necessary. My thinking: this vehicle was driven around for years as a car (i.e. no bulkhead separating front from back) and I doubt if, in that time, anyone batted an eyelid at the level of noise coming from the panels. Plus, the panels on a vehicle of this size are, save for the roof, fairly small with a reduced (compared with a big van) capacity for creating resonant noise. Added to that, the insulation we added will have reduced any noise reaching the inside of the vehicle. I was dubious as to whether to sound deaden, but decided to err on the side of caution and went with a mid-range option. My opinion having used the product was that it did make a difference to the amount of noise generated by each panel, however, I still doubt whether it was a big enough difference to make it worthwhile and I certainly wouldn't consider it to be essential. Unfortunately, it's one of those things that is almost impossible to gauge with any certainty unless you run two identical vehicles side-by-side, one with and one without deadening applied.
Very helpful....it is something I have been considering on my Peugeot Expert for a while now.
Hi Gayle, very interesting videos! Did you look into whether the wheelchair assisted modification invreased your insurance premiums? And have you found the extra height/depth useful? Thanks you!
I didn't look at the impact of the wheelchair modification on insurance price, in that the only insurance quote I got for a non-WAV Expert had other complications that would have likely impacted the premium too. So, sorry, I can't be any use on that subject. We briefly discussed the pros and cons of the lowered floor section in the 'One Year On' video, and didn't come to any conclusion as to whether, if we were to buy again today, we would go for the lowered floor or not. I do like having the extra internal height, as it allows for standing in a crouched position, rather than being fully bent over, but it comes at the cost of being more likely to ground the middle of the vehicle in severely pot-holed car parks. The other considerations that are worth thinking about are that the WAV version with the full length cut-out: 1) doesn't have the standard Peugeot Expert exhaust pipe; and 2) doesn't have anywhere practical to keep a spare wheel without taking up significant amounts of room inside the vehicle.
