ABOUT ME: Hallo, Servus, and welcome to my channel! My name is Felicia (Feli), I'm 30 years old, and I'm a German living in the USA! I was born and raised in Munich, Germany but have been living in Cincinnati, Ohio off and on since 2016. I first came here for an exchange semester during my undergrad at LMU Munich, then I returned for an internship, and then I got my master's degree in Cincinnati. I was lucky enough to win the Green Card lottery and have been a permanent resident since 2019! In my videos, I talk about cultural differences between America and Germany, things I like and dislike about living here, and other topics I come across in my everyday life in the States. Let me know what YOU would like to hear about in the comments below. DANKE :)

    You are soooooo right about the bread. I've been to many countries in Europe, even Germany, the bread in Europe is so much better than here. The bread I buy here for the most part in the russian rye bread, with the seeds. my grandpa whose family is from the ...well Czechoslovakia, would get that fresh baked and put into a wax paper bag. Ahhh ...memories of when I was growing up

    When you were in Germany you probaby walked by criminals who had hidden illegal weapons and would never have known. Why should criminals have more rights than good people? Not too long ago virtually everyone in Switzerland had a gun because everyone WAS their military. Some citizens there stored tanks in their garages at home. There are photos of this in old magazines.

    USA is Democratic Republic. The people don't directly vote for the President on election day, but instead the people vote for a group of electors who pledge they will cast their votes for a specific individual for President of the United States of America.

    No, the United States is a representative republic. We are not a mob rule country. A democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what’s for dinner. A republic is a well armed sheep contesting the results.

    “I doubt this is taught in school.” Feli, you are correct. “Civics” which was the class that covered how governments and specifically our government work (local, state, and federal) has been removed from the curriculum of general courses at any scholastic level. You need to focus in political science at the university level to be taught these principles.

    The confusion comes from the US political system. In the US, on any issue, there are only 2 ways of thinking, you are either a republican or a democrat. This dichotomy is very old and goes by many names, left vs right, capitalist vs communist. Each side hates the other. The easiest way to insult a republican is to call them a democrat, or call their country a democracy.

    By the way, for folks outside the US, "low and slow" means low temperature, looooong time! Anyway, different regions have different styles of barbecue. I live in California, and ours is Santa Maria style, which involves a cut of beef called a tri-tip (triangle tip, a cut from the sirloin that is unique to this region) and it's dry seasoned with salt, pepper, and of course because it's California... garlic! We cook it over native live oak coals. With some pinquito beans and some French bread and butter... mmmmm. My favorite. I'm getting hungry with all this bbq talk lol.

    No where is the word Democracy used in The United States Constitution, The Declaration of Independence, or The Federalist Papers. A Democracy is a simple popular majority rules and the United States at the Federal level does not employ that system.

    The presence of the U.S. military on German soil is a not-so-subtle reminder to Germans NOT to get any independent or progressive or ant-capitalist notions in their heads. In other words Germans shouldn't threaten the global capitalist system as they did in the past. Personally I would like to see the U.S. military mind its own business more and stay OUT of international disputes. It should be the UN, the UNITED NATIONS, that handles international problems, not the U.S. Germans should start exerting their independence from U.S. control.

    A constitutional republic protects the right of the individuals through the bill of rights, where as a true democracy majority rules.....we use democratic principles to elect representatives, bu we are not a democracy. In a democracy people in states with a smaller population go completely unrepresented in a democracy...so no we are not a democracy. We however have a very corrupt system.

  • @DavidTeerTheBackyardUfologist

    Really good stuff subscribed! You do a great job! Very good information. I was born in 1960 so I remember a lot here after the war, plus when I worked in an out patient IV room Hitlers radio man in south Africa was a patient his wife taught German at Samford university in Birmingham, AL. There was an American Sargent that was my patient and I arranged then to sit together we had lazy boys recliner. They talked a lot. I heard laughter and serious things. But I felt I was a part of the recovery anyway, Love & light. I fear our government is trying to do some things they did in WWII like propaganda with the media. I see a lot happening in America. They are taking freedoms away. I sure don't want to see history repeat itself! Nevertheless great videos and you are beautiful!

      The main difference between a democracy and a republic is that in a democracy the majority gets its way whereas in a republic the government is prohibited from doing certain things. The latter is how rights are protected and the former is tyranny. It is no different than a monarchy but for who is behind the tyranny. There is the tyranny of the one in a monarchy, the tyranny of the few in an oligarchy, and the tyranny of the majority in a democracy. Give the Constitution a read. Not once does democracy appear in that document. It refers to our system of government as a republic.

    • @FelifromGermany
      @FelifromGermany Před 2 hodinami

      No. That's not the difference. The rule of law is an important key feature of any democratic country, even those that aren't republics (e.g. the UK, Spain, Denmark etc.). That's not how those concepts are defined.

  • @kellysnipe9586

    One note; the reason the Nazis eliminated labor unions is NOT because they were opposed to better treatment for workers. The reason is because, philosophically, Hitler was opposed to a society based on class conflict, with workers fighting management and the poor fighting the rich. He preferred a unified society where ALL worked for the greater good, and this idea is also found in other state socialist or statist philosophies such as Fascism.

  • @DavidBrown-if8vn
    @DavidBrown-if8vn Před 3 hodinami

    Generally because we have Democrats, and Republicans as the 2 major political parties. Democrats usually have no problem knowing we are a Democracy, and we are also a Republic. Republicans for whatever reason, choose to deny we are a Democracy. I suppose they prefer to say we are only a Republic, because it sounds like they are on the right side, and calling us a Democracy would imply they are on the wrong side. It's just loyalty to the perceived home team, but both are right. You are allowed to believe anything you want, in a Democracy.

    The US is a representative republic that operates on general democratic principles. We get to vote, true, but not always. We elect representatives to vote on our behalf. If we were a true Democracy, I could vote on every issue. I am an Independent and I can't even vote in the primaries in the state where I live. That is not a Democracy.

    I really enjoy your content - Please keep it up! I work for an international manufacturing company and my manager lives in Germany. His English is very good and we communicate very complex ideas and terms with each other quite well. But I have found one simple word that comes up commonly in our scheduling and planning meetings that can work out just fine sometimes, but other times can cause a bit of confusion. It's the word "until". Such as: You can work on this until 31 December. Depending on how he uses this in his instructions, I could think that something is to be worked on continuously from now up to that particular date, but many times it can mean that something is not to be worked on before a particular date is reached. I've found that I can usually figure out his meaning by reading his entire communication first to get the context. But it surprised me to find this simple word causing problems!

    Ben was very correct talking about Barbeque. Low and slow is the way to go. Basically, each region in the US has its own formula for how you prepare it. And this has to do with the sauce. For example, in Texas most of Barbeque is beef while here in Georgia is revolves more around pork or chicken. Most of the sauces are tomato based where in the Carolinas the sauces are vinegar based. Everyone has their favorite and it just depends on what hits your taste buds. The only thing more derisive is chili. At issue, beans or no beans.

    Most German-sounding words in the UK are slang in English especially in the London area and i think they've come from Yiddish from Jewish immigrants .....eg keep shtum (keep quiet) to give a spiel ( talk to persuade someone to buy something for example) describe something as kosher to mean genuine .......but there are fewer of these in the UK than the US
