Saltshakers of death: researching the fungus that turns cicadas into "zombies"
Dr. Matt Kasson,
Associate Professor of Forest Pathology and Mycology at West Virginia University
Cicadas are emerging all over Illinois this spring, and if you look close, you might spot some with one of nature's strangest ailments. The fungus Massospora cicadina hijacks the cicadas' bodies and behavior, transforming them into what West Virginia University mycologist Matt Kasson refers to as "saltshakers of death."
You can warm up by reading this CNN article about Massospora by IMA member and science writer Kate Golembiewski, featuring Dr. Kasson!

Dr. Kasson received his Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from the Pennsylvania State University where his research focused on using a native fungus, Verticillium nonalfalfae, as a biological control of the invasive tree, Ailanthus altissima (tree-of-heaven). He also holds an A.A.S. from Paul Smiths College and a B.S. and M.S. from the University of Maine. His current research areas include fungal-arthropod interactions, biological control of invasive plants and pathogens, and the biology and ecology of historic and emerging diseases of forest trees. Dr. Kasson teaches undergraduate courses on general plant pathology and forest pest management, and offers special topics courses for graduate students including advanced plant disease diagnostics.
Don't miss this exceptional opportunity to delve into timely research! See you there!

Excellent video, I've learned a lot. As a layman I'd guess there *were* mostly the types of fungi which re-infected one host repeatedly, but if a pathogen is *too* efficient at killing its host, it quickly runs out of hosts. Same goes for viruses. You could get 100% contagion, 100% lethality and long-range airborne spread, but then you'd extinct yourself by killing all your hosts. So seems to me in the long run you need to pump the breaks on infectious efficacy and that's how you win the billion-year long game. Evolution is a clever beast. I'm dealing with Stogonospora. Trying to find a way to eliminate it on my Amaryllis bulbs. That's how I stumbled into here. If anyone knows a sure-fire way to kill stogonospora in infected bulbs (heat?) without killing the host I'd love to try.

What if you equated plant consciousness with human meditatation consciousness? If plant consciousness is actually similar to human meditation awareness which means that a plant experiences each moment as a total body awareness, each and every part of the plant is connected, it reacts to its environment as a totalility not a temporarily blinded part as in human response to reality or living.

Dear Gyromitra enthusiasts, I wanted to provide updates on my PhD research regarding the genetics and evolution of gyromitrin in Discinaceae (which includes the genera Gyromitra, Discina, and Hydnotrya). Furthermore, I wanted to share information on how interested individuals can help with this research during the 2022 mushroom season! A quick summary of research progress to date: · We obtained ITS and LSU rDNA sequences for 112 Discinaceae specimens. ITS and LSU sequence data allow us to construct a phylogenetic tree to identify specimens to species more accurately than morphology alone can while also uncovering uncharacterized diversity (i.e., species that have not yet been scientifically described) and understanding the evolutionary relationship between species. · We sequenced the genomes of 23 specimens. Genomes will help us identify the genes responsible for gyromitrin production while evaluating which species in the family have the potential to make gyromitrin or related compounds. · We assayed gyromitrin in 55 specimens providing clues regarding the distribution of gyromitrin production in the family. · This year we hope to publish our data concerning gyromitrin distribution and the new gyromitrin assay we developed for this project. Stay tuned! Your specimens have truly been invaluable! For each one shared with me, I have attempted to sequence ITS and LSU. I share these data and my sequence-based identification with you once generated. Some have been successfully cultured, assayed for gyromitrin, and/or been selected for whole genome sequencing. Discinaceae is a taxonomically complex family whose true species diversity is far from being fully understood. Each specimen has great value, beyond what I am doing. Sequenced specimens will be incorporated into ongoing and future phylogenetic, taxonomic, and biogeographic studies. Science is a slow endeavor and I am just one busy graduate student, so I thank you for your patience. If you are interested in donating specimens for my PhD research, please read this guide on how to do so: www.aldendirks.com/.../genetics-and-evolution-of... One thing I’ll note here is that your specimens are received as a donation, and they cannot be returned to you. They will be accessioned in the University of Michigan fungarium for long-term safekeeping. Make sure to make a “split” (keep a portion of the mushrooms for yourself) if you are interested in holding onto it for personal study. Thank you everyone for your enthusiasm and I’m so appreciative of individuals who contribute their knowledge, time, and energy by sharing specimens. Alden
