TEMU Is TRASH (and so was their Response to Our Exposé)
With gamified shopping and low low prices, TEMU has quickly become the biggest ultra-fast fashion powerhouse. But it's not just fast fashion, it's every product you can think of. Literally!
So how unsustainable and unethical is TEMU? Why do people keep shopping their cheap throwaways? And what can we actually do about it?
We go deep into the major issues with this business, how they responded with blatant greenwashing to the article we published on SJ about their practices and what our response was.

    All these tech companies are focused on collecting data and making money by selling it to anyone willing to pay. So if the buzz is "China has your data!" it’s already too late to start worrying about that. Data breaches occur all the time, and even if your information hasn’t been stolen and sold by some tech company, it’s usually not too difficult to find on the dark web. Recently, there were some significant data leaks from hackers targeting National Public Data, numerous medical billing companies, and health insurance firms. Essentially everyone in the US ended up with their Social Security numbers, addresses, phone numbers, and health records exposed. Digital privacy is essentially a myth.

    It isn’t shameful to have shopped at forever21 or primark. Everyone should shop at the best possible place they can afford. When I was at college, the only place I could afford was Primark and I shopped twice a year for some clothes. I couldn’t really afford the clothes from Primark either to be honest. Sustainable was what I made it, I am sure there’s still T-shirts knocking about in a box somewhere from my college years. I wore the clothes until they were falling apart and even then they became pyjamas instead of thrown out. The difference also was i shopped in store and only what I needed. Temu encourages shopping for every random thing ever and clothes etc have tested positive for lead and arsenic. I have noticed these days that the quality on a lot of clothes from Primark has changed with the prices going up - in good and bad ways. The basics are no longer as good of quality, but the more fashionable clothes have improved. I still buy their pyjamas. Otherwise, I just choose brands based on fit, quality of materials and construction, fashion longevity (aka classic styles) and of course sustainability practices. I can afford to now.

    If care about the Environment, a Fair Living Wage, you believe in SUSTAINABILITY then you would NEVER shop online. The same people who shop online while flexing their wealth also shop in Walmart which is Canada's and The United States of America's largest legal slave labour employer. There's no such thing as ethical commerce with China. I have to say that this video was actually surprisingly uplifting in a way, it was nice to hear different ways that people can avoid relying on these dangerous and environmentally unsound businesses, and kind of reassuring to hear that governments are actually trying to take action against them finally.

  • @asteroidrules

    It's kind of amazing how basically every e-commerce business in China is exactly the same: platform that relies heavily on a massive blitz of false advertising, sells cheap knockoff products that use stolen IP, hazardous materials, and slave labor, and embeds malware/spyware in their app and website. That basically describes Temu/Pinduoduo, Alibaba/Aliexpress, Shein, Wish, Tiktok, and now its infected Amazon, Etsy, and eBay as well. Every one of them makes another argument for decoupling.

    Temu takes advantage of an old shipping discount for developing countries which makes shipping small items affordable. so they don't pay normal shipping costs. and they use slaves, or basically slaves to keeo manufacturing costs down. They are still operating below cost to get market share, though.

    I've never shopped at Temu, but one of my employees is seriously hooked on it. What for me is more disappointing is the vast number of dropshippers who have taken over Etsy. It used to be a great place to get handmade gifts for loved ones, but it's hard to find anything handmade anymore.

    • @sustainablejungle
      @sustainablejungle Pƙed dnem

      I know! As I mention in the video, I run a small upcycled handmade-to-order business on Etsy and the platform is becoming so riddled with dropshippers that us actual small artisans are really suffering for it. And now with Etsy's new algorithm change starting next month, it's only going to penalize small shops and reward big dropshippers even more. So sad and disappointing.

Another huge thing to ask yourself is, “do I really want to force my family to wade through all this cheap crap when I’m gone?” I loved my sister to bits, but I am not so crazy about her 40 wool felt berets, her four sets of china, her seven 2-quart pots (WHY???), and her innumerable gew gaws and knick knacks, all stuffed into this tiny space. Every time I take another carload to the thrift store, I realize that eventually this all winds up in the bottom of the ocean . . . 😱😱😱 No better inspiration to stop buying shit than the experience of cleaning out a deceased loved one’s home.

    So the reason why these products are cheap in Temu, is because Temu force the sellers to sell below the cost of making the products as Temu tries to appeal to customers. The sellers of course can't keep up with the extremely low profit margins that could kill their businesses...so the quality of products are forced to be lowered hence broken items or items that will break easily. And it gets worse from there, as Temu punish sellers for any returned item with a higher debt amount (about 5 times + 1000 yuan) compared to the price Temu sets these items. You would think that missing parts are the fault of Temu sellers, but all the required parts are usually packaged in a box by sellers which Temu separates the parts and categorized according to their system. Any return because of missing parts are also charged onto the sellers. Items not sold within the time limit, every item gets a 500 yuan fine to sellers. After 7 days the items are destroyed without sellers' consent. As for what percentage Temu gets from sellers...this is actually unknown as Temu sets the prices and sellers don't see the final amount of sold items and final transaction amount.

    I used to buy from temu pretty often. I quit buying from them because I realized how wasteful it is. So much plastic, and the products are poorly packaged and end up getting to you broken, warped, the wrong size, etc. I was throwing out so many things because they are hoping that we'll say "oh well it was only a dollar I'll buy a new one" and into the landfill it goes. Agreed on the temptation. I'm pretty much good with avoiding cheap polyester clothing, because it just makes me sweat and feel icky. Also would never buy stuff like a knockoff Stanley cup, as there's no guarantee it would be safe to use, and also I don't see any point in the Stanley cup mania. However I decorate my planner with stickers and washi, and both Wish and Temu offer like 100 stickers for very little money. They have nice designs - probably stolen - so I've deffinitely been tempted. I also assume stickers wouldn't be such a huge health hazard, as you handle them fairly briefly. What stopped me from ordering were the shipping costs on Wish, and then I started to also think how overwhelming it would be with a huge load of stickers, but how many of them I'd really be using? So I figured buying locally from small businesses and artists can give me exactly what I want to use, and despite being able to purchase less stickers, there's a chance a lot in the bunch of 100 would go to waste anyway, or I'd need to sell them, which is always a hassle.

    It’s interesting, the appeal is limited for me because I’ve seen the low quality that comes from sites like this- is it a good deal if it ends up being garbage? On top of that, it really freaks me out that they’re selling things with batteries in them - lithium ion battery fires are really serious and a super big hazard.

    • @sustainablejungle
      @sustainablejungle Pƙed 9 dny

      Agreed it's definitely not a good deal if it ends up being garbage, but I think there are differences here depending on what you're shopping for. Some products are just inherently less prone to breaking and have more longevity. For instance, poorly made clothing won't stand up to more than a couple of wear, but say, a mug, would still likely be comparable in durability as a more expensive one just by nature of the materials. So in some respects, I get the appear for items like that but agreed, there is absolutely zero inventive to buy things like fashion and electronics that you know just aren't going to last more than a year at best. Again, not me suggesting we buy these things from Temu! Just understanding the appeal for some types of things.

      There's so much danger in these knockoff products that it's terrifying. I genuinely doubt there's anything they sell that's lead-free, as you said those lithium batteries are a fire waiting to happen, most of the cheap electronics have power adapters that will catch fire or cause dangerous shocks.

  • @evasusannesolberg-onodi8173

    Good content, but you really need to do something about your setup. What kind of table is this and why is so high? Are you sitting on a child's chair or why are you so low? That is weirding me out and I spend so much time trying to figure out if you're sitting on a low sofa peeking over a dining table, that it's hard to follow the content. I went to TEMU once. I didn't like the garbage-y splash page. I have never been back. I do not engage in "app" downloading to buy things . . . or, anything really. I am typing from my desktop. If I can't use my desktop I am really-really not interested. Something that you mentioned near the beginning troubles me, though. I would guess that you live in a city? Where I live, Amazon is the place to buy almost everything we need including some foods. There is nothing nearby. I buy produce, meat and dairy at the grocers. Everything else must be purchased via AMZ. So, unless you are buying my groceries, please lay off with the "sustainable" jargon.

    • @sustainablejungle
      @sustainablejungle Pƙed 9 dny

      Actually, it is quite the opposite. I live in the middle of nowhere in Wyoming, 4 hours away from any kind of city. I'm not trying to shame people for buying from Amazon (I do it for select things, because like you, I simply can't find them locally). Amazon has unfortunately become almost a necessity for many folks. I was mostly making the comparison to Amazon because most people are aware of how terrible they are from an ethical and sustainability standpoint, even if we still need to rely on them for specific things. Sustainability isn't about being perfect. It's about being better in ways we can. For me, that means I unfortuantely have to buy things from Amazon, but I just try to make an effort to do so only when it is truly a necessity and not purely a matter of convenience. So sorry if it seems like I was judging folks for shopping there!

    I googled under sink organizer because I needed one, got an ad for one on Temu for €35, looked good and was just what I was looking for so added it to my cart. Then I clicked on to a few other things to look around and I guess because they thought I had moved on I got a spin to win and was confused, clicked spin and got a 97% off coupon??? I was like uhh ok thanks I guess, went to pay for the item which was now about a euro only to be told they have a €10 minimum spend, so I then had to find 2 small kitchen gadgets I didn’t need to bring it up to >€10. I found this hilarious because I was happy to pay €35 for the item originally and now I spent only a third of the amount and ended up with two shitty things I didn’t need (the under sink organizer was actually good quality and still use it)

    • @sustainablejungle

      We so agree and that's such an important sentiment! Our motto when it comes to all things sustainable living is "progress over perfection". Ultimately, we're all human and imperfect, and if try to be perfect, it's so much easier to get discouraged and quit trying to be better altogether.
