Shepherds for Sale Introduction & Conclusion Overview // Why Megan Basham Wrote This Book
"My ultimate purpose is to confirm for the average evangelicals in the pews that the uneasy feelings many of you have been having... that your pulpits and your institutions are being co-opted by political forces with explicitly secular progressive aims are justified." - Megan Basham, Shepherds for Sale (Introduction p.xxviii)
In this video I am sharing an overview of the Introduction and Conclusion of Megan Basham's book, Shepherds for Sale: How Evangelical Leaders Traded Truth for a Leftist Agenda. I also cover why I was interested in the book, the main purpose and theme of the book, and why you should consider reading it. I also cover the guidelines Basham followed in writing the book and what she is not saying with this book.

Listen to her various interviews. Several her panelists were and are openly endorsing Christian Nationalist policies such the criminalization and even execution of homosexuals in nations like Uganda. Many Churches in the U.S. directly fund these sort of movements. Please look this up and don't take my word. If this is what you actually believe in and endorse than so be it. But if you oppose killing people for being gay please understand who and what you are allying yourself with.

According to a 2012 UN report, the narcotics trafficking industry world wide is worth an estimated $32 trillion dollars. You can't stuff that amount of money into a mattress. It's being laundered through banks and then through liberal non-profits into our schools, governments and businesses. Do we want to be naive that the people working in the shadows won't try to move our churches in the same way? They are. Look who she names as the organizations funding efforts to move churches in a woke/gay affirming direction. Then, look at what those organizations are doing to promote the woke agenda in other areas of our society. We're in trouble. But praise Jesus that all means he's coming soon!

I find it ironic that she works for the daily wire then defames some godly men and when people confront her she asks them to read (ie buy) the book. Talk about selling out. I wasn't sure of this lady before she slandered Gavin Ortlund, now I'm definitely not a fan. I would probably agree with some of her conclusions and I definitely disagree with Ortlund on climate change but we have enough voices on the extreme fringe right now and the church is losing the next generation because of it. How about a book called "Loving your enemies. How to stay true to Christ and reach the lost." That's a book worth writing and reading.

The ESV is corrupt. Read the beginning pages. They claim that they preserved the orthodox doctrines in the ESV. This means that whatever doctrines the translators believe to be orthodox is written into the translations. This is heresy. You translate without any biases for a pure translation. Let the Holy Spirit teach you - not man and not the translators. In the beginning of the ESB Bibles they even state that they have a commitment to God's word and to "historic Christian Orthodoxy." This is under the heading of "Publishing Team." Under the heading "To God's Honor and Praise." "So to our triune God" (the trinity is purposely written into the ESV). This is heresy. I will not allow the ESV translators to influence what the Holy Spirit is teaching me and neither should you. If you want to know if the trinity is true just read John 17:3 and Jesus will state that the Father is the only true God. 1 Timothy 2:5 - "For there is only one God and one mediator between God and men - the man Christ Jesus." Every pastor who uses scripture to try to teach the trinity takes the scripture out of context and reads the trinity into the scripture.

At least five independent reviewers have verified. First, Samuel James documents a list of factual errors that becomes tedious by its length. He asks, “Should we conclude that the errors, mischaracterizations, and inconsistencies in Shepherds for Sale are intentional lies in order to sway readers and enrich the author?” He wants to be more charitable. Second, Jonathan David, in “In Defense of Gavin Ortlund,” examined Basham’s descriptions of what Ortlund wrote and concluded she “egregiously misrepresent[s]” him. Then, Chris Date, of “Theopologetics,” examined Basham’s claims, in a 93 minute video “Gavin Ortlund Not For Sale: An Appeal to Megan Basham,” and concluded “Megan blatantly and very badly misrepresents what Ortlund says” (1:22.15). Fourth, Warren Cole Smith of Ministry Watch, in “Which Shepherds Are For Sale?” (The Dispatch), documented numerous cases of Basham’s journalistic malpractice in the book and noted, “If we can’t trust her with the basic facts, why should we trust her with the interpretation of these facts?” He concluded that her book was “propaganda.” Finally, peace-making Christian apologist Neil Shenvi, after comparing - with exact quotes and screen-shots -- Basham’s claims of what people wrote with what they really wrote, came to the verdict, "she is an unreliable interpreter." Unlike Basham, Shenvi had the receipts.

I am an SBC church member for 30 years. I wanted to like this book. But there are 2 aspects that bother me. 1. The title is too inflammatory to then choose to include so many shepherds who are not for sale. The fine print in the intro don't overcome this. 2. Chris Dale clearly agowed that she twisted the quoted phrases from Gavin Ortland to apply to people he did not apply them to. Basham has had multiple opportunities to repent of her clear and undeniable sin. Yet she chooses not to. Her pride and personal animosity towards Gavin seem to be a driving force in this.

I think Megan Basham overreaches her csse, but I also don't think she's wrong about many (not all) SBC churches (and by extension similar conservative evangelical churches in general). I think William Dembski, the famous or infamous intelligent design advocate with two PhDs (e.g. specified complexity), has a fair and intelligent take on Basham's book over on his Substack. I don't entiely agree with Dembski but his post on Basham is worth reading.

Each Version has its strengths and weaknesses, none are perfect, sorry KJ Only Users. Yah's Word was meant to be studied, not merely read like a novel. John MacArthur's Team said after they completed the LSB they fully understood what the King James Translators had to endure for each Book of the Bible. They pour their heart and soul into it. Dr John said the congregation was silent the first time they heard him say Yahweh in his preaching because they were used to hearing the word God, which is a Title, not an actual Name. I can't wait to study from the LSB and later this year, in 2024, they will release the MacArthur Legacy Study Bible.

Specifically the dominating principle is the sovereignty of God framing cosmology not soteriology. This is in sharp contrast to Lutheranism. Another way to contest the soteriological reductionism is found in Gerhardus Vos (also Dutch Reformed but not neo-Calvinistic) eschatology precedes soteriology. What do you think of that alternative to an unbalanced soteriology?

My favorite is that beautiful smooth Cordovan Calfskin 2002 edition. It’s my number one Bible. A friend worked for Crossway when we were in seminary together. He handed my a Hardback ESV Bible. It was right after 9-11-01. I had a NKJV MacArthur Study Bible at that time. I started to dive into the text and realized. This is a good word for word rendering without the clunky subject verb order of the NASB. I haven’t changed a bit. It is interesting at times when we are reading a text at church and someone says that their text is a bit different. Because I never bought the updated version. I know it so well. I can find any text almost with my eyes closed. I’m not a big study Bible fan for the serious student of scripture. People jump to the notes vs wrestling with the text. I do love the ESV Greek journals. That’s an amazing tool for exegetical work. Thanks.

Do I really want to watch this? I want it so bad, it might make it worse, but nevertheless Crossway had done this legend of a book justice. Someday I will be able to afford it, until then thank you for posting this review great job!! 😊 love the comment at 3:28 "oh love the smell" i also love the smell of a fine book! You just made all of those likes up. All "he who does not obey the Son" means is "he who does not obey the Son's command to BELIEVE" (i.e. a man who REFUSES TO BELIEVE on and instead rejects the Son). In other words: "He who believes on the Son has eternal life" is a command; those who hear the good news of Jesus Christ and The Gospel are COMMANDED to believe on Him.

Thank you for your review. One point that would have been helpful for your audience is a summary of how Reformed Baptist Covenant theology (i.e.1689 Federalism) correlates with the wonderful work you have done. This link will help any who would like to have more information on that system. czcams.com/play/PLD7MrXRhfvKCmQxcqjn2zFrISZMEfIPqQ.html

One of the hardest and most destructive sins to defeat: sexual sin. How do they know that 68% of the Church watches porn however?
