Mesopotamia: Religion, Gods & Myths

Mesopotamia, located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in present-day Iraq, is one of the world's first civilizations. It is recognized as the birthplace of civilization and gained the nickname "land between two rivers" due to its geographical location. Mesopotamian towns came to light around 4000 BC and were essential in the advancement of literature, agriculture, and governance. In the ...

Excellent video -- broad coverage, great organization, & good graphics. I think one large reason Ancient Egypt was so powerful for so long was the flexibility of their religion. Syncretism & localization ensured the pantheon ebbed & flowed as needs required. It always impresses me that regarding the civilization, tombs & temples were the primary receivers of wealth -- NOT palaces. Even the large ones (at Amarna or Malkatta) were rarely ornate, & consisted of many rooms -- which turn out to be small, cramped, & badly decorated. Things remained that way as long as natives ruled. Conquerors, raised in other cultures, focused on their comforts. So glad I found this. Subscribed.

This is really good. Could you do a video on when humans first began to move from simple worshiping of animals and nature or ancestors to a structural, organized religion? Is that what Göbekli Tepe is? Did we bring our idea of a god or gods out of our first migration from Africa and it slowly evolved into the earliest belief systems? Was there any sort of religious practices known for the earliest Homo sapiens? What do we know about Neanderthal belief systems? Sorry. That’s a lot. Awesome video. Thank you. Hoping for more like this!

Misconceptions. There was no religion in ancient Kemet. Only spiritual systems. There were no Gods. Only the Neteru which were conscious forces of nature represented by Animals that embodied those elemental principals. Science and spirituality was not separated. They were taught togther. The fight religion has with science did not exist in those days.

Wouldn’t the structure of those spiritual systems and the organized worship of them technically be a religion? It’s an interesting thought though; like, when exactly did humans’ worshiping of ancestors or animals and nature first start to evolve into an organized system?
