Unexpected Daytime Shortwave Catch: BBC World Service from Ascension Islands | August 29th, 2024
Here in the West Coast of North America, it's rare to hear the BBC World Service from Ascension Islands. Not only did I receive them but I received them during the daytime! Ascension Islands has 250 kilowatt transmitters but on most BBC broadcasts they are on half power (125 kilowatts).

Definitely a nice catch. I am located in northern Montana and never seem to catch much during the day.
It's very hard for me to hear them to. Propagation must been my friend today and I realized it when Vatican Radio was booming in on 15565.
I can receive a weather radio station from Sterling (WXM53) from Limon when I go outside. It's a channel 1 transmitter. I could also get KWN40 WXJ45 and a little bit of KEC76.
At the end. The audio and video lose sync. I don't know what caused it to happen.

This mini radio is very powerful with small parts. Start varxo other components. Somehow the signal reception
Really nice catches! The WRN one on 13650 is a great catch at your location. I also get that one, which kind of surprises me as well. The signal is beamed to the north from the UAE, yet it reaches me way down in South Africa. This signal seems to travel far and wide!
@@swlistening Interesting! I rarely get signals broadcasting from the UAE or BBC from Oman. So I always enjoy getting this one.

@@bankom90 Thanks! This is usually the strongest signal as this beamed to me in North America. For me, VOK is one of those stations where if there not broadcasting directly to you, your signal is extremely weak.
Man what happened to your stream?! like... it suddenly went unavailable, and when I refreshed, it said it is private o.O BTW nice that you recorded this for the archive with good signal, thank you :) their tape has definitely stretched out in the last 10 years since we could have listened to them on various freqs mostly on 19m & 41m from a 250kW transmitter, now they're down to this 10kW one on 4750 only 😥 Personally, I've gotten more of Bangladesh on 693 kHz than 4750, despite BBC Radio 5 Live on the same frequency 😂

Good catches. I see you’re outside. Are you just using the telescopic whip as the antenna? If so, reception is terrific. Reception here on the east coast has been iffy for me.

03-07z on 6080 and 05-07z on 15580, both via Botswana. How about these?
@@ArnieDXer The 6080 frequency does work for me. It start at 9 PM my local time making it the perfect station to fall asleep to. It is a little bit weak but other than that pretty good. I have also caught the 4930 frequency just barely one time. The 15580 from 05 to 07 also is a good one but I noticed it weak or not heard at all the past few days. Probably from the geomagnetic storms we had over the weekend

@@ArnieDXer WOW! I did not realize this was from 2017. I thought their broadcast was like a year or two old.
@@theshortwavearchive35 Portuguese went into a similar "disservice" on Sep 23 2019, while German and Italian had done so on Sep 1 2021. I think many other services behave like that too, particularly to Europe.
@@ArnieDXer I would much rather have less frequencies on the air if it means they can make the programming better.
I'll call this as a great reception giving the fact you only had the telescopic antenna!
Especially with the noise floor in my house (those darn computers). The program sounds like it was in English which I don't think was scheduled for that time.
This recording includes the leap second that was heard on WWV/H and CHU for quite some time (it's the double beep that happens 9 seconds after the longer beep for the new minute)
Maybe set a wake time for the radio and record it using a computer or some other device?
That is a good idea but I usually take the radio with me on my bike ride to and from school. I might just record off a WebSDR.

I see you use cassette tapes for your recordings, that's very cool! I still have a Walkman that I use to listen to my old cassette tapes.
Awesome! I also have a Walkman but it needs new belts. So far I've been trying to save up for a nice high quality cassette deck so I can start making some more shortwave tapes.

@@swlistening I used to have a Sony CFD-S70 until my little sister got angry once and threw it. It wouldn't turn on after that! (I had gotten it from a pawn shop and the CD player wasn't working on it so I wasn't that mad) Currently I just have a tiny new fake looking Walkman that I stopped using cause it has terrible wow and flutter
