    A wee bit of background information ... Ken Stewart and the amazingly John Scullion first met and played in The Loan & District PB N. Ireland under pipe major Willie Wilkinson ( The Big Man ) who then was a very close friend of the Shotts / McAllister dynasty and the Loan & District also used the Sinclar chanters with McAllister reeds combo ... 🎶🎼🎵

    Piper Major Cristiano is one of the most important pillars of the proliferation of GHB in Brazil. Despite the great difficulties that Brazil finds me in having access to good quality instruments and accessories. Congratulations PM Cristiano! I am very grateful to your noble person for all the motivational and technical support you are providing to our GHB group! Thank you very much!

    The BB ethos of morality and discipline remains strong. 1st Troon BB band has a handful of World Championships under their belt. The boys still get equipment and uniform for nothing but the cost of lessons has risen to the princely sum of £1 per session. Long live the Boys Brigade!

    Stuart is one of the kindest humans I've ever met. He's an excellent teacher, and he has no ego which is very hard to find in elite piping. I had retired from piping for many years (really, during the rise in Stuart's career), and so I had never heard of him when I met him in 2022 at the Pocono Workshop in PA/USA. I was captivated by his teaching style and patience, and when I went home and realized his role in piping, I was even more impressed with his approach. I deal with a lot of brilliant minds in my career and in the world of piping, but I've never met someone at that level who is as down to Earth as he is. I could listen to him play and watch his fingers for hours. He does all the cool things we all want to do, and he takes chances and fiddles with things to create a unique style that is 100% his own. It's fun to sit on the sidelines and watch other elite players try to mimic the style, but I think the style is entirely intertwined with his personality.

    Great see Willie. I bought a set of pipes from him, tested in the cellar of a piping pub in Glasgow. They are wonderful sounding drones still being played. He said he got them in 1936. He included a set of cane drone reeds. 😊 👍 Thanks Willie and team for a great video.

    Great interview. It was good to hear a piper of this level that piping just didn't come to him. He had an 'ah ha" moment and started to move forward. I had a judge say to me once last year that I was bass prominant. I didn't think to much of it but when I mentioned it to my instructor at the next lesson his response was " Ian McLellan, Richard Parkes" he repeated that 3 times. Then he explained whay he said that, and I felt pretty good about that.

    I remember Robert being one of the Muirheads pipers (must admit, for years didn't recognise him without his big Afro lol) and I competed in the same Eagle pipers solo march contest at Royal Arch Halls back in 74-75. Hugh McInnes, Rab Pinkman, George Lumsden, John D Burgess, Hugh Jamieson, Murray Henderson were competing that day. I was always under the opinion that Muirheads as a band play better than solo pipers, then and also of today. Incredible hard powerful playing and expression. Never mind the simple hurdie gurdie march playing of today's top grade 1 bands. They were a class band. I wish I and everyone else could hear their radio Scotland 30min special broadcast which was around 1975-76. Anyway, I also remember Muirheads playing in the back garden at Shotts around 1975 with Hugh Kennedy, Tulloch Castle and Lexy McAskill and noticed the brilliant Bob Hardie having a bit of a struggle with the chanters on the green. Not surprising if they were going for a higher pitch like Robert mentions here. Robert is spot on with his comments here and how do grade 1 bands get away with playing the SOS as they did the year before. In the MSR, bands of today for many years even, seem to alternate between three tunes every year. Such as FMM can just turn up and play the easy as pie, long and boring Highland Wedding march which they've played for decades off and on. SFU too. A good video interview Robert.

    Great conversation. I was lucky enough over 40yrs ago to be stationed at Strontian…. The police beat covered the areas Dr.Angus mentioned, and the MacDonalds from Glenuig were famous……rightly so. Always very educational to hear any of the brothers talk or play, and I always thought their piping was a connection to older times…..maybe just the fact that they hailed from Moidart influenced me in that regard. Thanks for this video, it took me back a few years.

    The GREATNESS of Wark and Strathclyde Police. All gone now. In 1960s-90s I was a huge American fan of pipe banding. No longer. In 21st century pipe banding lost its strong Scotsman Brave Heart character= love the ladies, but THEY DONT BELONG IN MEN PIPE BANDS because mixed gender pipe bands have RUINED the 40,000 yr old tradition of strong Scots males which pipe bands used to represent. USA has gone weak Woke PC, but you Britons are FAR worse with this Woke PC abandonment of tradition and strong males. MAKE PIPE BANDS ALL MALE AGAIN. The women SHOULD FORM THEIR OWN SEPARATE PIPE BANDS. Maybe you Briton males will find the guts to re-establish all male bands. But I don't think so=TOO FAR PC WOKE WEAK GONE. Pipe banding is PC Woke GONE. Sad.

    One of my favourite pipers although he seemed to play a slightly heavier style in the past.(A style I prefer.). He often plays Allan Dodd's Farewell to Scotland in competition which is not a tune that I used to hear before I heard him playing it. He uses the English language in slightly novel ways but he's a musician not a language expert. When he says that his father was a very good but unknown piper I can understand that. I knew lots of pipers who only played at home or locally, had very little tuition but a fantastic ear and a deep feeling for Gaidhlig music.

    Modern pipe bands suck. Women dont bong in them. You Scots went Woke PC wimpy. Women belong in their own bands. You wont do that though. Too weak now. Far removed from the strong Scotsmen you used to be. You got so weak that you dont even have a Scottish head of state but a Muslim! Pipe bands suck now. Too wimpy. Get the ladies out of men bands. You won't. Scotland has lost it.

  • @michaeljones7111
    @michaeljones7111 Před 10 měsíci

    21st century pipe banding sucks. Women don't belong in men's bands. There is no comparison between the great 20th century all men bands like Strathclyde, Edinburgh, Shotts, British Calle, Invergordon, Dysart and today's wimpy Woke PC mixed gender bands. You Scots have really let yourselves go Woke PC. You've destroyed the traditional aura of the Brave Heart fierce Scotsman as represented by male pipe bands. Not worth watching pipe bands anymore. They're like watching a grade school prom. What a joke.

    MATHEMATICS teacher . I've spoken to 3 or 4 of his school pupils by pure surprise. I was on my travels up round Aberdeen and Dindee area and I mentioned I use to live and play in the Pipe BAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. They brought up the name Shepherd. Bob wouldve physically slapped, punched or kicked many piper in Ballingry School BAND or the Dysart and Dundonald pipe BAND. My dad spoke to him about it.Bob got influenced by Canada made A fantastic Medley for 1980 season Australian Ladies Orange and blue Bluebells of Scotland Banjo Breakdown jig Banjo Breakdown Reel /Hornpipe none of this overrated over the top STACCATO kitchen PIPER piddle .Its not nice anymore. I liked a lot of the slow airs Bob INSTRUCTED THE BAND TO PLAY March du putney 1981 Jimmy Findlater MEDLEY. 1982 slow air Laggan Love in the Children's song MEDLEY The Breton Melody 1983 I cant rem what they started off for an opening tune. IT WAS NICE. I WATCHED BOB CONDUCTING UP AT THE INVERKIETHING THE PIPERS WAS VERY CLASSY KITCHEN PIPER TUNE PLAYED IN JIG TIME . BRILLIANT. DYSART WAS RIVALS TO THE BANDS I LIKED SOME I PLAYED IN.. THANK YOU BOB EVEN THOUGH YOU KNEW THE POLICE BEAT MCNEILLSTOWN IN BANGOR 1987 YOU HAD SHEPHERD CHANTER FIRST. 😂😂
