HOW SOUTHAMPTON ART GALLERY BECAME THE US ARMY HEADQUARTERS ON D-DAY
zhlédnutí 9Před 16 hodinami
When the 14th Major Port first landed in Scotland they were allocated to different ports but as D-Day grew nearer they were consolidated again at Southampton where the Art Gallery in the Civic Centre was to become the US Army headquarters during Operation Overlord
THE ARMADA LEAVING FROM SOUTHAMPTON ON D-DAY
zhlédnutí 104Před 16 hodinami
This film of D-Day had over 10,000 views during the commemoration. The film starts in b&w with an LST leaving the Royal Pier on D 8 which then merges into colour film of two Canadian Landing Ships leaving the Town Quay to join the Armada on Southampton Water before heading to the Calshot light ship and then onto the Solent before travelling to Normandy on D-Day.
TRAIN FERRIES AT SOUTHAMPTON
zhlédnutí 28Před 16 hodinami
Until this film appeared the role of the Port of Southampton train ferries was unknown. It is estimated that 90% of the French rolling stock was transported through Southampton mainly from this berth. Without the benefit of the supplies provided by railway General Patton's Third Army could not make their rapid advance across France.
ROSIE NEWMAN & THE ALLIES STRIKE!

Rosie Newman was a friend of the King and Queen which gave her access to the port. Although the title says D-Day it was filmed in December and goes to show the significance of the port until the end of hostilities. The plan was that after Operation Overlord US troops would land directly from America on the continent. However this did not prove possible and Southampton remained the principal all...

US forces were not supposed to embark at Southampton on D-Day although this film proves differently. The contemporary film shows the US Army embarking at Embarkation Hard S4 outside the present day St Mary's soccer stadium. The attached film also shows US GIs landing at Bloody Omaha.
THE CHURCHILL DOCK
zhlédnutí 91Před 16 hodinami
The significance of Southampton during D-Day and Operation Overlord is still not appreciated today. This film shows the Prime Minister seeing off the assault troops who would lead the landings in Normandy and suffer most casualties on D-Day. The Hampshires, as they were known, was the first regiment ashore and was made Royal in 1946.

Southampton was the primary destination of evacuated casualties from hospital ships, discharging their patients at the Outer Dock which is now Ocean Village where the quayside railway line can still be seen in the quayside. From Southampton casualties were dispersed all over the country some to the Royal Victoria Hospital at Netley which was run by the US Army.

@5:52 The upper profile is that of an LCM1, as seen in the video. The lower two are both LCM3s afaik. Unfortunately (for me) these are illustrations of the USN version, as seen by the mounted 0.5 Brownings, which were absent on the RN version. I've been struggling to find any detailed info about the RN LCM3 and was hoping to find a hen's tooth in this video.

I served 12 proud years in the Royal Hampshire Regiment from 1978 to its amalgamation (which you allude to here). I came from Gosport. I grew up in Hillhead where 1&2 SBS Sqns had had an HQ at the Osborne View Hotel, recceing shorelines for D-Day. The pub, typically run by ex-submariners from HMS Dolphin (2nd Home Flotilla) recognised the Regiment with memorials from the Hampshires. I donated a regimental plaque. The Hampshires earned the coveted Royal status for actions on D-Day and Africa. At my time of service there was a fierce often unseemly rivalry between what had become the The Devon & Dorsetshires (fine lads) and us, the Royal Hampshires. It often went far too far. I had wondered where this rivalry had come from. Perhaps this claim to be first on occupied French soil is at the root of the terrible rivalry. I recall the famous ‘race’ between the Paras and Royal Marines of 3rd Cdo Bde en route to Stanley in appalling conditions. I know lads from both units who downplay it. I think of the West Kents at Kohima. (Dorsets part of 2 Inf Div relief of the Kohima ‘tennis court’). This has been interesting. These regiments exist no longer. I had the misfortune to endure amalgamation. Doubtless with fine units (The Queens Regt from where I think the West Kents derived). Now, there’s nothing left. The Royal Anglians, fine regiment with fine battalions (Vikings, Poachers). But the modern snazzy outlook is - incredibly - no major infantry Corps even Brigade level ops. The world looks otherwise to me. #Tigers

Thank you for sharing this video 👍 My grandparents had a small house barely fifty yards away from Wn38 (St-Côme-de-Fresné), so, as a child, the German bunkers there used to be my favourite playground. I have kept quite a lot of objects I inherited from my family and that are related to D-Day and to the Battle for Normandy - among others a British Mk II helmet with an RASC flash, a pair of TT formation badges and, most important of all, a collection of more than 500 photographs taken at Arromanches during the time when Mulberry B was active.
