It is highly tempting to look for speculative meaning. For example, you could try to treat it as a symbolic account, or you could try to see Daniel as a conjuror who set the whole thing up, or you could imagine that space aliens came to rescue Daniel, or that time-travellers turned up, took him away and replaced him at the appropriate moment. However, none of these are in the text, and you cannot argue that they are ‘the’ meaning, or even ‘a’ meaning. Without actual evidence in the text, you have to stick with the words. My answer is based on a metaphorical and symbolic understanding of this story. The lions den metaphorically is the instinctual life in the body including the desires and appitites of the body. The lion is a also fire symbol including the power of the lion that can be lived out in life by the individual. If the individual has reached enough consciousness and ego development then he has the ego ability to manage these powers of the lion including the desires and appitites of the body. The lion powers can be expressed in life without overwhelming the individual. He has the lion. The lion doesn’t have him. Without enough consciousness and ego development then the powers of the lion will consume the individual, for the desires and appitites of the body including the instinctual fires have the individual. Daniel is left overnight in the lions den. He was not consumed by the lion and everything the lion represents. Therefore, Daniel represents that individual who has gained enough consciousness and ego development that he can safely express the lion in his life without being carried away and consumed. Because Daniel has reached this stage of development his life can be lived out more successfully than the individual who has not reached this level of development.
