Thanks for the review, I’ve been needing a new vocabulary app. I completed Speakly for Finnish which is 4,000 words, but I feel like I need to keep pounding vocab until I have closer to something like 10,000 words. I’ve been intensively and extensively reading books, but I feel like I still have a way to go really close the gap so that I can do that more effectively.

Witzigerweise funktioniert das Verb "machen" umgangssprachlich auch bei deinem Beispiel @2:58 ... in Hessen zum Beispiel würde das überhaupt nicht auffallen. Ich würde zum Beispiel im Dialekt so etwas sagen wie: Ich mach (mich) zum Einkaufszentrum. Du hast also absolut recht =)

I think I agree with the ultimate conclusion of this episode: the sheer, ongoing grind is the hardest part, coupled with the constant need to recalibrate your expectations about how long the process is going to take (no matter which end point you're aiming at!). I happily confess that if I'd had any real notion of how long this (continuing!) project would take I wouldn't have dreamt of beginning it. But that slowly growing feeling of the hump starting to become less daunting, and being able to *listen* to relatively quickly spoken German is pretty amazing. It's that old notion of sticking it out while you're in "The Dip", as it's known (by Seth Godin, among others). The Dip gobbles up a vast percentage of those who start on the same journey, because there's often little-to-no sense that you're still advancing. A couple of tiny things that I stopped for along the way (for what they're worth!). 3:08 ...and also whether there's an article attached to the noun being described, and whether it's definite or indefinite! Until you start to "feel them rather than 'derive them' ", adjectival endings are truly repulsive! 6:40 Umm, I don't think "sehen" is very regular at all! cf "siehst/sahen..." :-) But point taken! ((You're going to really hate me, I have no doubt, but I'm going to harp on a little about your "a" sound in German. Mentally substituting a "u" where you see a German "a" would make a huge positive difference to your spoken German for practically zero effort! So where it's "ankommen" you could mentally read it, for the purposes of pronunciation, as "unkommen" (with the "u" is pronounced as per English "under", not as per the German "u" of course!!). It's not a perfect fit, but it's much, much closer than the "a" sound from "than" that you're using a lot of the time. In no time flat, I guarantee that that English "short a" sound will be banished from your German(#). Money back guarantee!)) (#) Except for the word "Handy", and probably a few other loan words, of course!

Not crazy at all. A pretty smart move in my opinion. The rebel 1100 might be alright but I hate the automatic trans thing they got going on. Suzuki's have always treated me well, and I will keep owning them. The 8s/r look amazing, minus the non adjustable suspension. I honk the horn accidently all the time on my 1000s and TLR. I feel like an idiot.

gsx8s is the best i could have bought. Especially with the A2 license firstly limited to 48 hp its not too fast or snappy for a beginner. I have it 4 months now, got the arrow exhaust system and bar end mirrors and it looks sick, rides sporty enough when you need it to but also handles well on long rides. Real good value for your money.

I put in a few months on Busuu, off and on over the course of a year or so, but didn't bother renewing it when it ran out. The best aspect, by a country mile, is the checking of your work by "native speakers". Why the scare quotes? Because there is (or at least was: I'm talking about 2020/2021 here) a huge amount of variance in the language abilities of those who are making corrections. As a (bona fide!) native English speaker it was sometimes a little scary seeing the lack of quality in some of the responses to an English learner's submission. Essentially: if it can happen in English, then what guarantee is there for those correcting German? The best thing, in my experience, is to latch onto someone - - or a few people - - who you learn to really trust, and to carefully cultivate their help/friendship. On more general matters: I recall that the actual lessons felt quite anaemic, being restricted to using the "fill in the gaps"/"arrange these words into a sentence"/"choose the right pronoun"/"memorise a handful of related words" patterns, which weren't very stimulating for me. [[[The switch towards this type of nonsense is also one of my pet peeves with the modern version of Duolingo. Sigh... I totally understand the practicalities involved, but regularly lament the loss of flexibility.]]] In some sense I think the two "arms" of Busuu are too distant from one another: the regular exercises are way too constrained, and don't demonstrate or encourage any creativity or flexibility in the language, while the free-form "Write a paragraph and have it corrected" are too *lacking* in constraints: that blank text field can be really, really demotivating sometimes, as you contemplate how to "talk about the sights of your city" for the 17th occasion. Finally, on Busuu, the grammar lessons before the main problems weren't actually bad, but there was not really anything there that 2 minutes work with Google and Stack Exchange wouldn't have matched (or bettered). On the question of politics in language learning apps, I'd have to say that I'm pretty neutral, unless it gets overwhelmingly forced and facile. I *do* want to be able to talk about climate change, immigration, varying family structures, cultural differences and so forth, but I don't want 20 sentences making me repeat that "Die Arbeitslose sind nicht faul, sie suchen jeden Tag nach Arbeit", using 10 different sentence structures. Maybe short dialogues are a more helpful form for such topics (and/or reading/listening to something like "Langsam Gesprochene Nachrichten" from DW.)

ClozeMaster is more in line with the intent to learn through comprehensible input. Even at my early stage in Russian, I see a new word in context, in a sensible sentence. Links to further definition of the new word are available to deeply learn the word

Aah, fun episode. I first remember hearing about a headless rider in an amazingly great American TV series from the 1970s called "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" (my recollection is that it was just called "Night Stalker" in Australia, but it's been, ummm, aaah, about 50 years since I saw any episodes! Sadly, there seems to have only been one season made). I guess the whole theme of such stories is that of redemption, and the attempt to instill a sense that sins needed to be atoned for, one way or another. Similar plots run through truckloads of fantasy literature (even something like the Lord of the Rings, where the dead army needs to pay for its betrayal to be allowed to finally RIP). A couple of small suggestions "Also macht euch bereit, wenn du das kannst" mixes the two informal third party pronouns... So "Also macht euch bereit, wenn ihr das könnt", I guess? At 2:12 I think "folgte" is more like "followed" here, rather than "succeeded". And nice dancin', Pferdemann!! Seltsam - - and distinctly worryingly - - umm, erregend 😂
