Yep, that's how we do it here. It's a podcast, not specifically made for CZcams where everything is fast paced. Also, we've asked our audience multiple times and they love the banter, so that's why we keep doing it. :) Also, did you see that we even put a time stamp in the description that let's you skip right to the topic. :) But anyway, thanks for your kind comment!

Some good points. I’m in my 40s and have made a lot of music on both computers and standalones. There’s always going to be a divide on this subject as the older folks will gravitate more to the tactile feel of buttons and sliders. Can’t beat the computers power and flexibility. Can’t beat the feel of old solid well built gear. Also, I’m on the computer all day at work. When I get time to sit and make music I don’t want to do it on the same machine I hated a few hours ago while I was staring at spreadsheets.

I would like to make better sounding CZcams videos; the simplest being one-take guitar and vocal recordings, but I'd also like to try incorporating double-tracked vocals and guitar, recorded separately. I'm leaning towards the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, however, I prefer to record in a different room from my computer. I may be able to simply use long cables from there to the interface, but alternatively, how about a stand-alone multitrack recorder that I can take anywhere? Would a Zoom R4, for instance, allow me to record several tracks like this? And once recorded, could I import them into a DAW to edit them? What other multitrack recorders might be suitable? Any advice will be appreciated!

  • @DonnTarris

That was one heck of a fast costume change!!! ;-) It's good to consider why a particular process is being used, like compression or equalization. That will take some of the subjective question out of the equation. Think about it... Compressors were used a lot in their infancy to control the amplitude being broadcast, and the intent was to do so without creating an audible reduction in the dynamic. In the 60s, the effect of compressors on instruments like drums and/or bass became part of the creative process, witnessed particularly in the sound of Ringo's drums and Paul's bass through the span of the Beatles recordings. Arguably, you will equalize before the compressor so that it is activated for your purpose, i.e. don't waste it's action in trying to fix a problem that's really created by a poor recording with too much bass or transients.

Thank you for your comment and the kind words! Oh wow, I can think of so many examples, haha. Basically any modern metal production. Spiritbox comes to mind. The impact sounds on "Holy Roller" are insane. I personally use post pro FX on many of my own mixes, too. If you listen to the album - "Downfall" by a band called Swallow's Rose, you'll hear a lot of those things on a melodic punk rock record. Same is true for a band called Mad Morality. Listen to their song "Casserole". I used that one as an example in one of our online courses. Or anything current by Embrace The Fire. -Benedikt

Less than 4 minutes in and I already learned something new. I've been dabbling, very passively, with recording music for over a decade now and the concept of scratch tracks is something I've never heard or though of. I've been playing guitar for over 30 years. And toying with piano/keys for about a decade. I picked up a bass and a digital drum kit a few years back. I don't touch the drums much but I have friends that come over once a week and it's convenient to have them here as opposed to moving a kit around. Guitar is where I stared but I've become quite the dilettante regarding the rest of music in general. Music is my home so it's only natural that I know the rooms that make up that home. I just have to accept that there is no "the take" the first time around and most songs go through multiple passes to evolve into the final product. I've always been so focused on trying to get that one good take to make post production easier, that it never dawned on me to just get an outline to build with. The first pass doesn't have to be perfect. It just needs to get the point across and then slowly tighten the instruments up. Okay. 9 minutes in and so many of my obstacles have been cleared. This is all some real bare bones stuff I wish I would have known so long ago. I agree with getting the drums down as the first "real" track as it is the heart of the song in a sense. I've already been able to build a plan to actually maybe getting some worthwhile recording from. Now that I think about it, I actually have some scratch tracks. Now that I understand that that's what they are. Thanks for this video. Game changer for me.

@@theselfrecordingband I'm just joking :))) Well because of my poor english listening skills, I can't understand what you guys say clearly. Well I have some problems about Spdif but I can't find anything to solve it. So could you guys help me with these questions? Thanks so much. 1. Have you guys ever used Komplete Audio 6 Mk2? If the answer is yes, could you guys tell me about it's Spdif? 2. I have a Komplete Audio 6 Mk2 which has I/O Spdif, but it's not like the old one (KA 6 MK1), It doesn't have clock link feature (or clock source, idk what it's called), I can't find any manual about that audio interface which mention about Clock Link settings in their control panel and Clock Link Spdif feature as well. I just test installing dual interfaces (mine and my friend's Behringer 1820) in MacOS, they work very well with Aggregate, and without Spdif connection between them. So will Spdif work without touching any settings about clock link feature? Or they have to be supported to use that feature? 3. Is ADAT and SPDIF Clock Link used in Windows? Or just in MacOS?

I love your podcast, but one thing I strongly disagree with you guys on is your fixation on perfection. It's okay for things to be slightly out of time and out of tune. That was true of every song before the year 2000. I think a lot of modern mixers are way too obsessed with making things sound flawless. It no longer sounds like it was played by humans. One thing I appreciate about Warren is that he allows imperfection. In fact, he advocates for it. He did so several times in this episode, and I could kind of sense you in the background silently disagreeing with him. I don't feel like I'm portraying your position falsely here. I've listened to dozens of episodes. And of course in the "Mixing Myths" episode, you argued that quantizing, drum samples, and tuning didn't "suck the life out of music." But I honestly don't understand how anyone can listen to a modern pop song and say that with a straight face. I feel like modern mixers have forgotten what actual musicians playing in a room sounds like. Music listeners have been browbeaten with flawless music for two decades and it's warping our sense of "good enough." How can someone possibly connect to a vocal that's had every note snapped to the grid when you're aware that no human is capable of that? It immediately creates a sense of un-reality. I'm not saying you should leave distracting mistakes, but if your definition of "distracting" is too rigid I'd argue that you've lost your way. Put on a Beatles song and enjoy the great mistakes.

I appreciate your comment and I have to say, I actually completely agree with you! :) Maybe we have to work on how we communicate that. I've been playing in bands my entire life and certainly haven't forgotten what a band in a room sounds like. I also think my mixes and productions don't sound too perfect. There are definitely imperfections in those songs. The key here is where you said "I'm not saying you should leave distracting mistakes". And what we're seeing is that many hobby musicians are struggling with knowing where to draw the line. The bar is still pretty high and you wouldn't believe how big the difference is between a world class musician playing with feel and imperfections and many hobby musicians thinking it's feel, when it's actually distracting and not helping the song. All those legendary older records are played so well and even the "mistakes" are great, which is not the case in many modern productions. Also, decades ago, they would have killed for tools like the ones we have available now and they would have certainly corrected some things if they had access to tools like that. So some parts and performances are great, despite the mistakes, not because of them. Those tools are just that - tools. You can use them to create perfection, or you can use them to serve the song. I'm always trying to make sure every note is exactly where it's supposed to be. Not perfectly on the grid or perfectly in tune. But wherever it feels best. Which is exactly what a great performer is trying to do anyway when playing or singing. So, bottom line: You are absolutely correct and so is Warren. I didn't silently disagree, at all. And every artist I've ever worked with will tell you that to me it's all about the music and how it feels. Not about perfection. And again, thank you for pointing it out! We obviously need to make sure we communicate this properly, so people don't get it wrong. :)
