How far can you drive an EV and why aren't you buying these
Thank you Mark from @TheTeslaLife for joining the discussion.
Links from today's show:
If you love taking longer trips but want to buy an electric vehicle, chances are you’re no stranger to range anxiety. Range anxiety is the concern that your EV won’t have enough battery capacity to complete a journey, and it’s a fair one given the work-in-progress state of charging networks in North America.
www.cars.com/articles/electric-vehicles-with-the-longest-range-422227/
Advertised range estimates for electric vehicles aren't all that reliable. The real world has steep hills, fast-moving freeways, cargo and inclement weather, all of which can deal a blow to an EV's supposed range. That's why it can be incredibly enlightening to observe how an EV's range holds up on actual roads. Some electric cars flop in real-world range tests, while others overshoot their manufacturer-advertised figures. In the case of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST, one early test by CZcamsr JerryRigEverything suggests that the truck meets its impressive range estimate-and then some.
insideevs.com/news/714994/chevy-silverado-ev-range-test/
But the government's estimated range rarely reflects the real world, which is one of the reasons we developed our 75-mph real-world highway range test. As its name implies, this test aims to see just how far an EV will travel on a full charge at 75 mph.

    I don’t need more then 500 miles, if I got 500 miles on the road. But where I live it’s 90 miles one way to Lowe’s, Home Depot, or Best Buy …. There and back is my maximum range. Commercial airports both ways require 1 or 2 Superchargers. If I stay in town, everything is within 4 miles. Going north, south, east or west the speed limits are 65-75 mph. When ever I leave my little town a supercharger is involved, unless it’s north, then speed control and anxiety.

    This last weekend I drove about 450 miles in my model Y to the "Everything Electric Show" in Vancouver Canada. I live in the Spokane area so I went to Seattle first, then went up to Canada from there. The traffic was so horrible in the Seattle area which added hours to my trip that I swore NEVER to drive through Seattle ever again so I came back home a different way and actually suffered major range anxiety in a Tesla... WOW! There were not enough chargers of any kind on WA State hwy 2. Driving under the speed limit (milking my car), which ironically added as many hours of driving as the traffic did in Seattle. I finally made it home with only 10 miles remaining on my battery. Why didn't I plan better? I thought that I did but the software in the car was WRONG! P.S. I still love my Tesla.

      I shook hands with Sandy, Jack, and Robert, but I never saw you. I would have loved to shake your hand and thank you for doing a great job. However, after such a horrible trip on the road going there, then staying in a traffic induced noisy room resulting in getting no sleep, and to top it off with a venue representing very few vendors (IMO)-I left on Saturday late morning. I'm assuming you shared sometime Saturday and/or on Sunday. My unlucky experience turned out to be one of the worst trips of my life and I'm an old man. I'll never attend again and left with a feeling of wasted time, energy, and money. Who knows... Maybe meeting you would have been the cherry on top that I needed to get me out of the slump. Anyway, if you personally get invited to the Spokane area, I'll be there no matter what.

    @lucidf8 Před 5 hodinami

    I’ve noticed that my Model Y LR mileage efficiency has increased over time. Originally driving a 100 mile loop, I would see about 270 wh/mile. Now, two years later, I’m down to about 250 wh/mile. Most of this is just dropping speed to 5 over the speed limit (60-70 mph) on freeway driving. I’ve never had range anxiety except the first few months of ownership. And, in all that time, I’ve never needed to use a Supercharger. Even on a double trip of 200 miles, I’ve not been too concerned with range. The bigger lesson is to keep the charge between 25% and 80% to be nice to the battery. That way, the car will have plenty of power even in the coldest weather.

    How many people do you expect to spend a hundred grand for a car? You're discussing the one percent here. If everyone in this economic class bought an EV, we'd still be at one percent of sales. My Bolt EV's 260 miles is plenty of range for my needs, and its price is a fraction of the vehicles you're discussing except for the Hyundai. Don't complain about all the stupid rubes who don't know that they should be driving an EV and then pitch six-figure or high five-figure EVs to them. That only makes you look stupid.

    I own a Tesla and a Toyota rav4. I have taken both on long trips. With the size of America long road trips are very common for many drivers.. Although I love my Tesla and use it 85% of the time I wouldn't use it on a long trip where time is an issue. Stopping frequently and sitting at a charger for 30 or more minutes (if there is a charger available) is very frustrating when you just want to get to your destination with as few stops as possible with 5 minute fill ups. An ev enthusiast may be ok with adding time and stops to their trip but an average car buyer non ev enthusiast will see it as a big inconvenience, an actual downgrade from their gas car. Also an ev's real world range is always less than advertised..Sometimes by a lot and gas may actually be cheaper than using charging stations in many markets with more affordable gas.. EV's are perfect vehicles for shorter distances. The kind of driving most people do on a daily basis and the ability to charge at home is a huge benefit in regards to cost and convenience but gas is still superior for road tripping in my opinion. I'm lucky to have two vehicles. One as a daily driver and one for less frequent road trips. Many people can only afford one vehicle so an ev might not work for all their driving needs.. Mass adoption will only happen when ev's start competing with gas cars in real world range, affordability and fueling convenience. The Lucid is a great long range ev but who can afford it? Sounds like the solution' is bigger battery packs but that comes with issues. Mainly affordability.
