Looking on the bright side Mike, the Mets might get endlessly ribbed, but at least they’re not the Blue Jays right now.
Oooh special extra episode? I remember you mentioning this last episode but I didn’t realize it would be out a week early-unless I forgot that part. Quite possible XD
If this isn’t the perfect advertisement as to why you should volunteer, I don’t know what is!
It should be noted that mammals actually got big right at the start of the Paleocene: they didn’t get big later on and outcompete giant birds and reptiles like usually assumed, because they actually were the first land animals to get big following K-Pg.
A really interest and informative episode about how science an be done ethically/equitably in the modern day! Thanks for having the guests on :)
This little mini-sode made me wonder--would it be worth it to do a listener Q&A episode once and a while where we could ask questions about subjects/science covered on the show, or adjacent questions such as this one? I think it would be cool, but that's just me :)
Can you talk about the film "Forbidden Zone" 1980?
After reading the plot summary of that movie, why would a podcast focused on paleontology and evolution talk about it?
Oooh. Birds should be a fun one :)
great video you deserve more love i live in illinois and i thought are fossil was a squid cool animal didnt know about where most prehistoric animals in us lives
Glad I could help!
I've always found myrmecology fascinating. Thanks for having Dr Smith on as a guest!
I learned a lot more about teeth than I ever thought I’d know or that there was to know and I’m kinda glad I did.
I'm not gonna lie, I did not realize we were already at episode 132. It crept up on me.
Not gonna lie, kinda wish the bear dogs made it. I love the WILD life that was around during this time. Some real high fantasy like stuff.
Always a fun time when Mike takes the wheel!
He might’ve been a little corrupt in regards to local government but you know what, considering some of the other things scientists did or said at the time, that’s not so bad relatively.
love your content
Growing up seems tough and awkward no matter the species.
I only just recently learned about the horses/deer eating baby birds thing. The animal kingdom is wild.
Ohh, I have a little slice of petrified wood from Arizona. My parents bought it many years ago. The little ceramic deer figures that used to be on it are long gone, but it's still attached to the little orange information card it came on.
This was an awesome episode! Fia you were amazing. Thank you for sharing and explaining ❤ 😊
Sorry for not getting to this sooner, but looking forward to this one!
Pteranodon means “toothless wing”
Geckos are adorable--that's all I know. Excited to learn more!
Best intro ever lol.
Congratulations on getting a house Gavin! Literally living the dream. Sorry about all the mix around on closing though.
Our ape-like ancestor decided on two legs, and now we have to work for a living in a capitalist system designed to crush our souls. This doesn't seem fair.
I always enjoy learning something new about history when Mike takes the wheel!
Something tells me I need to watch Always Sunny XD but I wouldn’t mind an explanation of Easter Wine Wednesday!
I'm in Canada, I'm lucky our student loans aren't near as bad, but damn. This one's gonna be sad episode huh?
Very interesting episode! What a fascinating man. Also, congrats Fia!
Ngl, I've never seen the word spelled and only ever heard it pronounced, and I always thought it was Rheatites, like the bird in the same group. I've learned something just from the title!
I don’t know who this is and I’m already excited. Mike always picks very interesting figures.
I have nothing witty or clever to say, but thanks for another great episode :) I always learn a lot!
Welcome back, Fia! Also great episode. Everyone knows about the End-Cretaceous Mass Extinction, but it's rare to go into detail about it besides the often main focus "The end of the dinosaurs" ft. a massive asteroid, Roland Emmerich's 2012 levels of apocalyptic chaos and death, etc.
Not the musical?? Darn!
This made my night!
Thanks Matt! Good to hear from you! Hope everything is going well!!
@@iwishyouweredeadpodcast2391 all is well! Love the podcast!
“How are you with tentacles?” I’ve seen enough spicy anime to know where this is going.
"What a wonderful day on the internet, can't wait to see what cool thing Mike has for us to--Oh..." Salutes to Laika, sometimes we humans don't deserve dogs <3
You know, if I didn't have anxiety about the moon breaking out of orbit, or crashing into Earth as an inevitability before, I certainly do now lol. I know it's probably gonna happen when I'm long long gone from this planet, but I mean we've lived through "once in a lifetime, world changing events" almost ever year since 2001 so I don't have much hope it won't just happen next week.
Well I know where I’m going next time I’m in Philly.
im here for my bio project
The only thing I know about sponges is that they live in pineapples under the sea. And something tells me I’m about to have that fantasy shattered :p
I do always love a good Mike Takes the Wheel episode. Especially, as a lover and student of history. Also, welcome back Fia!
As you once said on Twitter "If only there were other groups that could be studied. Oh well. Too bad there isn't."
New subscriber here keep it up! This channel desperately needs Promo`SM!!
Ah Cuvier...I remember him being talked about in an anthropology class I took in university as an elective. Specifically in his regards to Sarah Baartman and his classifications of race. The most unfortunate part of anthropology, is having learn about the early days when it was really just an excuse to justify racism and colonialism (i.e. skull shape vs. intelligence, classifying different ethnicities as subspecies of the human race, etc.) I appreciate that my professor refused to make excuses for early anthrpology, and just told it like it was "A lot of these people were racist, both intenionally and unintentionally." To your comment on "product of your time." I always like to say, "just because some or most people at the time didn't consider it wrong, doesn't mean it was right."
Just because " modern " people think something was wrong it doesn't mean that it was....Though , obviously today unless you want to have your career terminated you are obliged to conform with certain views . As George Orwell predicted .
Grass. I can’t wait to go outside and touch some for myself :p Also I can’t believe it’s been about a year since the Nicholas Stenno episode. Time flies!
Well done Mike, best Today in History bit ever! That’s exactly what I think about every year when December 7th rolls around. Edit: GEESE! As a Canadiian, I have a relationship with geese. It's antagonistic. They're aggressive. I had to fight one off with a snowbrush once. I've seen a airforce of geese swoop off a roof and down into a field of seagulls to take control of an open field for grazing and raising their young. They'd just, line up at the edge of the roof, one by one, and take flight, and swoop down on the poor seagulls. Geese are evil.
Idk why i'm getting this vid recommended to me but it could be because of the algorithm, its weird sometimes.nice one though
I’m gonna miss the weekly episodes, but I totally understand! You gotta do what you gotta do! Also feel better soon Fia an Mike! Edit: Small note on the indigenous South American written languages, I don’t know about other languages, but I know the Mayans had a written language. They even wrote down their histories in codices, and on their monuments. Unfortunately, and unsurprisingly, the Catholic missionaries had a lot of these codices burned because they believed them to be entirely religious in nature and not historical. Of all the Mayan Codices; only four remain, and they’re all in Europe. Only recently did we decipher the language, and only recently did we realize that they were actually recording histories, not just religious practices. I know the Incans had an administrative language that comprised of tying knots in colourful braided ropes, but it wasn’t the same as a written languages. It was mostly for record keeping. But we’ll likely never be able to decipher that unfortunately.
Definitely good notes to have that I should have mentioned. The Mayans aren't truly Saouth American though, I don't think they ever got down onto South America per se, mostly staying in Central America. They are also an extreme outlier in terms of written language in the Americas. Plus Central America doesn't have much of a fossil record because the land there is really young, and the environments there aren't good for making fossils, so I wasn't able to find any record of fossils being important to them.
@@iwishyouweredeadpodcast2391 That's entirely fair! I just thought it would be a cool thing to mention :) still a great episode!
