The use of iconic large-scale projects to attempt various “quick fixes” for modern cities is widespread. Known as ‘the Bilbao effect’ this phenomenon is underpinning the construction of spectacular architecture even on the most unbelievable places. But what’s exactly ‘the Bilbao effect’? And most importantly, is it really working?

I disagree. Imagine the GSA had not been built 100 years ago, and that Mackintosh’s plans were unearthed today. If it was decided to build a new art school from these plans would it somehow be a counterfeit or of lesser architectural significance simply because the architect was no longer alive?

The GSA management should have nothing more to do with the building. They should all be removed for incompetence.

Surely it's Mackintosh's design that matters, not the physical materials used to build said design in 1897. In terms of the quality of the construction and materials it probably wasn't much better than other buildings of its time period. We are in love with it as a piece of architecture not the physical glass and wood for example. There are plenty of people skilled enough to recreate these things and that's all that is required to allow the building to exist once more. A painting cannot by recreated as it only exists in one physical form however in architecture the physical side of things can be recreated to allow the piece of art to exist again.

Charles Mackintosh never built it he only designed it, hmm, and yes they do have all the necessary and relevant plans and details to rebuild to its original specifications, the only thing that will be missing is the smell of that first building. As a design for drawing and painting studios it couldn't be improved so there is no point in attempting it, and after looking at today’s brutalist constructions in architecture, one shudders to think just what they would replace it with. The trouble with the Charles Mackintosh building was that it was no longer functioning as a drawing and painting studio. Like many other Art Schools it had been hijacked by conceptual oxygen thieves, it was their misuse of these premises that created the original fire; running an overhead projector constantly through a spray expanding Styrofoam installation, the new art eh?
