The Jepson Videos: Visual Guides to the Plants of California
Fremontodendron californicum (flannelbush)
These evergreen shrubs grow mostly unnoticed until they burst into bloom. When they do, splashes of bright yellow color appear on the landscape.
The shrubs are covered with star-shaped hairs and the plants look fuzzy but beware - these plants are not soft to the touch and the hairs can cause skin and eye irritation.

There was one of the Acacia plant that was considered a shrub. Would like to know the hardiness for cold temperatures, such as in Colorado and how well they would grow if planted as a shrub in front of your house.
I want to plant this, but am concerned about the resin and potential fire issues with this plant. It is growing all around the surrounding area. Should I be concerned?
Love these flowers.
Is this edible?
No, actually many Native American tribes used to use the seeds to commit suicide. They are toxic…
Also found in Arizona, but not native?
Great video. One small error: the label for the distribution map of Rhododendron macrophyllum states "Rhododendron columbianum".
I have had this growing in my garden for several years now but have yet to see a cucumber growing on it. Wondering why
came here from Twelve Trees by Daniel Lewis
I love these flowers, too. Is that a Banana Slug at the end of the video?
Thanks
Is there a map of the “California Bay Laurel” / Umbellulone-trees naturally occurring dense growth areas in California ? Or southern Oregon / Grant’s Pass area ? It has some nice stuff in its aroma (Eucalyptol [eucalyptus], Eugenol [cloves], both alpha and beta Pinene [evergreen trees]…. … but also produce a ketone called umbellulone which produces those terrible headaches ….
I need more info on this plant. I’m trying to get some seeds or seedlings but the sights are out of stock
These are great videos!
Good Video, thumbs up. Is this plant toxic ?
I have two occidentale and the fragrance is wonderful. It is 12/30/23 and although mine are tightly budded I have seen some starting to flower here in Eureka. Thet are a must have plant for northern California gardens. And thak you so much for your excellent presentation. It is rare for me to hear many of the terms you used. Music to my ears.
Seen these in bloom while driving between Lucerne Valley and Joshua Tree, alongside chinchweed. Getting some seeds for our tortoises, too!
Thanks for the information. I can always tell them apart in the winter by the smooth slivery branches. The buckeye can be eaten if boiled and leached similar process to an acorn. The buckeye name is not from the skin covering the nut, but rather from the buckeye itself which has it's own "eye". I forage these each year in the Auburn area and create pancakes with them.
One of these started to grow in my back yard, and I let it go, along with several varieties of native oaks. It's now over 6ft tall and makes a good privacy screen for the window of the neighbors' ADU. Mine appears to be a male plant, and I don't have galls, but get some kind of insect eggs in a pale yellow foam that I also see on rosemary bushes. I trim out the dead stem bits periodically, but otherwise never water it or do anything else. I plan to put some flowering salvias in front of it. Thanks for the detailed explanation.
❤❤❤❤❤
incredible adaptations :) salvias are neat

I don't appreciate negative reports
Can you do a video of soft cuttings for propagation?
Are the roots invasive?
Another nice video by a fan of this plant czcams.com/video/DHta3ik6yQw/video.html
It's not just the bulbs. Leaves and stems are toxic and the old animal husbandry books refer to goats and sheep with "the staggers" after grazing on them. The flowers of midwestern species like T. nuttallii secrete nectar that disorients and kills commercial honeybees. The native andrenid bees and drone flies are not harmed.
They senesce forming a squirt that cover their legs to the bottom, take notes girls
California fan palm is my favorite of its species mesia bird is my bird
Thank you, brilliant video: concise and clear
I take it that it won’t grow in N. Florida???
Tulare County too. Mineral King road and Sequoia NP. But be careful, often draped over poison oak.
I been raising monarchs for years and would like to bring the pipebine swallowtail population up. Any idea where i could get seeds inexpensive?
if you pick leaves off of them you get quite a sticky residue on your hands. also they're quite moody on the coast, we barely water ours. we've had 2 die of root rot. we love the flowers so much that we don't mind how temperamental they are :)
relictual, great word!
I believe that is the Klamath where the Ewoks live
I have a question , do these come back every year And how do you harvest them (Just the flower, or cut down to the leaves?)
2:15 gorgeous specimen. Is it true they shed leaves in the summer? I have just noticed my love of these, having lived in CA forever. Glad I finally had my eyes opened to plants. These plants feel so California, they may as well be the state flower. Shame the poppy is so gorgeous too. A real shame.... gorgeous poppies. Shame.
Does the floral smell generally smell okay to humans? Would it be a good idea to plant it in my yard?
Palastikum munytum?

So is this tree a nitrogen fixer? Is it native to Orange County California?
It has beautiful flowers.
I wish someone would do, or popularly publish if it has already been done, temperature collection or reflection behavior for some of these plants, especially when in flower, and especially in desert situations, where it seems James Lovelock's proposed evolved effects might tend too be most critical. Even if we see colors, it could be the effect of the surfaces may either convert light away from heat, or use light in ways that avoid or reduce increase or actively decrease infrared spectrum radiation. Seems like this is a way understudied realm of knowledge, at least seems to me as a popular fan of such publishings.
Will the Bigleaf Maple (Acer Macrophyllum) grow in the Niagara, Ontario Region (I believe it's Zone 7a - Please correct me if I'm wrong).
Can it be propagated? I saw some on a trail and I'd love to take a clipping if it can be regrown with a clipping. Thanks for the information.

I love ferns. Planted some hardy ferns in my yard. Great ground covers & graceful in the breeze.
I am trying these now at 6,800 ft. Speaker sounded Asian, and really nice. 👍
Out in the Mojave Desert we have another plant without chlorophyll: Sand Food or Sand Plant; Pholisma arenarium, it is parasitic on members of the Asteraceae family. Could there be a fungal relationship between this plants root system and Rabbitbrush, for instance? Could this Pholisma be mycoheterotrophic also?
Excellent, thank you!
