My contractor used paper tape in my master suite, it worked great until it failed. Paper did not seat into the compound, common issue with paper tape. Atleast with this you can see it seeped through and that its dry. People use paper because thats what they've always used. This is definitly better.

Maybe you should show the reaming/deburring of the pipe before you mislead your audience. If you don't do that practice, the EDPM O-Ring could get cut and the interior of the pipe could wear out prematurely due to water friction.
