Quiet Riot Metal Health - The Rise and Fall
Rock Daydream Nation featuring Peter Jones (The Contrarians) puts a spotlight on Quiet Riot and their third album "Metal Health". Propelled by the monster hit single "Come on Feel the Noize" this was a smash hit (#1 Album in US) and paved the way for many other metal bands to have commercial success. However, the success was short lived and the decline for Quiet Riot rapid.
We look at the Metal Health songs, the performances, the personalities, the aftermath of "Metal Health"...

I absolutely love this album its a segue from their more protoprog direction for most of the Morse era into a nostalgic reprise of the classic Purple sound. Everyone sounds great and the band sounds invigorated and happy. I like every song on this album but my favorites currently are New Fangled Thing, Now You're Talking, and Bleeding Obvious. I don't obsess over album covers because that's a vacuous, insipid, approach to music appreciation. The music is all thet matters to me.

Maybe too much reading the lyrics slowly with punches for emphasis. I saw them on the Metal Health tour opening for Loverboy. It was a good show but, Loverboy kicked major a$$ that night! As for why they fell out of favor? It was Kevin's cockiness. He may have had a powerful voice but, he didn't know how to hold that power back. It was too in your face and to be frank, annoyingly so. We loved the album Metal Health but, Condition Critical was a big drop off in songwriting. Kevin's bravado seemed to only increase though. If you know what I mean. A little band called Metallica had also just flipped the script on the whole scene too. We dropped the "poppy" sounding Metal for thrash when Ride the Lightning came out. You messed up on the Grim Reaper show Pete. I saw them with Armored Saint and Helloween. That was a great show at a small club in Harrisburg Pa. called the Metron on Sept. 30th 1987.

Great video guys this is probably my favourite overall but I like Condition Critical enough aswell. I even enjoy those first 2 Japan only released albums would love op's but very expensive, you also mentioned randys love of British rock thet cover Small Faces on both early albums and Dave Clark on the debut. I might have to play my unofficial press of their debut later and I have that late 80s album with a different singer in my collection but I've never listened to it.

Excellent show, gentlemen! I can think of one band that had a bigger fall… and AS I’M TYPING THIS, Mr. Kerr JUST SAID IT: Twisted Sister. After watching “The Two Johns” discuss TS recently on JC’s My Music Corner channel, I had forgotten what a precipitous drop off they had. Quiet Riot were right up there too, with a mighty large tumble down the mountain. The big difference is that QR ended up - somehow - making eleven total studio albums. TS only did five. Besides showing the power of radio in the 1980s, the TRUE money maker? Why, MTV, of course. They helped to make these bands, and also aided in their untimely demise and downturn in fortune. If you don’t have a hit, your career turns to $h!t. That’s the way the cookie crumbles. I played Metal Health a few months ago, after my friend ranked the whole Quiet Riot catalog on his channel, Rock Show Critique. I thought the album was good - for the most part - but it DIDN’T make me play their other albums. Very interesting. Hmmm… 🤔 I wanted to add, that in America, you might say that Quiet Riot helped to usher in the era of commercial hard rock. As you said, they were the first “metal band” to have a number one album in the USA. You cannot take that, or six million copies sold in the States away from them. Forgotten about? Perhaps, but there’s no denying the power of that title track. I still love that song, man. The drums are so powerful and the bass playing really pops as well. Good production job, Spence. By the way Mr. Jones, Mr. Kerr is correct: the Quiet Riot rockumentary is definitely worth viewing. I look forward to the future adventures of “The Two Peters.” Much like “The Two Johns,” you guys have a right on, righteous, raconteur rapport that l find quite entertaining. Cheers from The Big Apple. 🍎 Rock Out, Prog On & Pogo! It’s my mantra and my logo. Your clone and mine, ~ The Mischievous, Devious Doppelgänger of Davey Cretin, from CRETIN CLASSICS.

I don’t mind QR 3 at all. It’s just a more mature sound. The wild and the young is a classic too. They couldn’t win no matter what they did though. They were criticised for virtually copying Metal Health with Condition Critical so they changed their sound for the next album and it still only reached number 30 in the US charts. It’s almost gone gold now some 38 years later

The way I see it is quiet riot were the band that opened the floodgates for what would become the glam metal scene for the 80s while Judas priest and iron maiden were leading the pack for the early 80s metal scene quiet riot took MTV and the record charts by storm with metal health and in the blockbuster year that was 1983 with huge albums such as thriller, pyromania and synchronicity quiet riot for one glorious moment beat all of those albums and went number one it's the incredible achievements this band did in 1983 that in a way plagued them because they never got to those heights ever again
