MILKING GETS EASIER | WHAT is the STRAW YARD? | FRESH GRASS for the NEW COWS | PERMACULTURE FARMING
VLOG 100?!!?
Milking our Dexter house cow gets easier now she comes to be milked without having to catch her and convince her to come to the stanchion. While her milk yield is still low it is going up.
We look at the design of our silvopasture grazing system and set up our electric fencing to make a new grazing cell for the cows as well as one for the chickens to come out and follow the cows on their rotation.
We look at the straw yard, a permaculture designed area for our laying hens which uses a polytunnel as a hen house. James comes up with some ideas of how to keep the hen house cool in this hot weather.
We finish the day by heading up to our beautiful swimming pond and cooling off in the water.
About Tap o' Noth Farm:
Hi, we're James and Rosa! Welcome to Tap o' Noth Farm, an 8 acre permaculture designed food forest farm/homestead in Aberdeenshire, NE Scotland. We practice home scale to small farm scale agroforestry and regenerative agriculture methods to produce organic fruit and vegetables, raise dairy cows and goats for all our raw milk needs, geese to graze our silvopasture and coppice systems and laying hens, moved around in a Chickshaw, for an abundance of eggs.
Our videos aren't 'how to's' - more videos to give a glimpse into our lifestyle and hopefully inspire you to bring aspects of what you see into your own life.
FOOD FOREST BERRIES
2024 sees work begin in establishing a small scale, permaculture designed family soft fruit enterprise that will rub shoulders with our other on-farm businesses. We aren't trying to compete with or replicate the large soft fruit commercial farms that are common place here in Scotland and around the world but showcase a small scale, ecologically diverse model that will work with our family farm's values and needs both economically and environmentally. Our sales will be direct to the consumer, working with our local community via a Community Supported Agriculture model (CSA), either through weekly fruit shares or by offering a pick your own/U pick. The berries grown in the market garden will add to the top fruit - apples and plums - that we have already been growing in food forest systems for nearly a decade.
HEDGE + FURROW'S OFF-GRID SHEPHERDS HUT
Come and stay on the farm in our traditional shepherds hut, complete with pizza oven and wood fired outdoor bath, set amongst fields, trees and beside a beautiful pond.
You can book through AirBnB here - airbnb.com/h/hedgefurrow

I’m sad to hear that Saskatoon berries have made it past Canada. I liked the exclusivity. I’m extremely happy that other places get to enjoy this little purple berry. Frozen is best. I know most of you won’t be able to spot a leaf on a drive through the wilds of if it’s origin, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia, I know I can. I know several places of wild growth. I’m happy and mad.

Forgot to ask in my earlier comment but do you have a plan on deterring birds from eating the berries at all or are raspberries quite good at protecting themselves from the birds? I had a small bush in the garden and was surprised that most of them escaped the attention of the birds but they were pretty well hidden and covered by their own thorns.

The fence system looks great. Is the lower wire not live? It didn't look as if you are strimming or scything the grass around the base of the fence. I also wondered if Rosa was moving the wire away from the shrub but maybe not. You don't have issues with the fence shorting? Inspirational and entertaining as always, thank you.

    • @TapoNothFarm
      @TapoNothFarm Před 2 měsíci

Hi there! We often do cut the grass below the bottom line as it is electrified. In this instance we just trod the grass down which we felt was enough but now, a month later, we'll most likely have to scythe/strim etc before putting up the fence as the growth is a lot more. We also carry a pruning saw to cut back branches that are touching the lines or at least hanging close that might temp browsing which will then pull the branch onto the fence. It's different every grazing cell, every month really. Thanks so much for the support!

@@TapoNothFarm it certainly was a couple of years ago but not sure if they are anymore. It seems the UK market is still small. In my opinion they are as good as blueberries if hand-harvested at the right time, but there is a range in ripeness on any given bush and they don't last long. Machine harvesting results in more unripe fruit so may only be suited to processed products that can be sweetened
