Rainbow Trout Catch and Smoke: Trolling in Flier, my fast 27 pound 12' DIY foam fishing boat
Trout season has arrived in Vermont and a few days ago I took Flier trolling. A couple hours and we had our limit of rainbows which I smoked. Flier is ideal for easy trolling with a couple of rods. I just lay them down on my tackle bag in the center of the boat, angled in opposite directions and row slowly. There's plenty of width and room in Flier. Within 15 minutes one or the other rod tip jumps in toward the center of the stern and it's an easy pickup for me -- I just let go of the oars and pick up the rod a couple inches in front of me. I don't need a rod holder.
No one else on the lake was catching anything from a boat. I saw an aluminum pram and a couple of kayaks and a canoe. All reported being skunked. Trolling from a kayak with a paddle is very difficult (I know I have one). You have to back-paddle continuously without hitting the rods....and those have to be in rod holders, which are tricky to extract from under pressure.
Everyone else was was trying to cast stationary, and because the wind was blowing (variable direction, gusting at times to 25 mph) they had their hands full not being blown into shore.
Under oars, Flier was in perfect control in wind, even the worst blasts, and I could keep a steady trolling speed, upwind, downwind and crosswind.. The fish hit like clockwork. All were 12-14 inches, and I believe they were all holdovers from the previous year's stockings.
I smoked them very simply in an ordinary covered barbecue, using a few leftover briquets from last season, and a few chunks of hardwood -- black or sweet birch in my case. The fish were delicious!

    Dear Mr. Hacksaw, I bought you plans a yr or 2 ago. Put em in a binder… wanted to build this for my grandson who is ate up with fishing, so far he has bested all my PR’s he is 10. We are his guardians. This yr we are homeschooling, retired public educator, but his needs weren’t being met. So we began this project yesterday. He got the math! The angles and arcs! Thank you so much for selling this plan reasonably. His best friend and fishing buddies dad passed away a couple of weeks ago. He lives down the road a bit. I dearly hope these two boys learn a lot about life, and fishing as we explore the project you provided for us. Best wishes from NE Oklahoma.

    Thank you for sharing this amazing build and selling me the documentation that would allow me to recreate your excellent design. I learned for only $12 that my plan to build a different vessel using similar techniques was likely impractical. That being said, may I ask your opinion on something, please? Do you consider PMF to be suitable for constant immersion if coated in something more waterproof, for example wooden hull paint, or would such a finish be injurious to the foam/glue laminate? I saw notes in the designs talking about how certain finishes will melt the foam and so forth.

    • @SRHacksaw
      @SRHacksaw Před 11 měsíci

      Hello Tom, I don't use the term "poor man's fiberglass". It is non-specific, and frankly, true polyester and epoxy fiberglass are very different in properties from what I've used in Flier. Flier's specific light weight cloth laminate was tested in advance with samples to be appropriate for its intended load and use as a 12 foot ultralight portageable drysailed fishing boat. I've proven the boat out in practice for three seasons now. I honestly can't tell you what would work for entirely different boats' purposes, loads, etc. There have been boats built of real fiberglass fiberglass over foam, using epoxy resins on styrofoam, or polysester or vinylester resins on solvent resistant foams -- but that's a big technical subject, and the expense and skill levels required to build are high.

      If you're talking about powering a heavy boat, go with the usual aluminum. This is a 27 pound rowing boat you can carry on your shoulders. It doesn't need the puncture resistance of something 50 times heavier with 50 horsepower pushing it 15 knots. Does that make sense?

  • @unedichi

    this boat is a little weak for the sea , Have you tested the boat in the sea?

    • @SRHacksaw
      @SRHacksaw Před 11 měsíci

      Nope. This is Vermont. No sea. It was built for lakes and ponds, and portaging into off-the-beaten-path areas for fishing. Places you can't carry a Boston Whaler into. It's not weak by any stretch, however, and I've been in some difficult conditions on Lake Champlain, and been secure. Safety on the water is 80% seamanship, prudence and experience, and 20% boat.

    Quick question: I've started my own Flier build (after watching the video many, many times and purchasing your building guide), but have a question re the rowlocks that the tholepins go in. Are the rowlocks just glued on, as per the reinforcement guides? Or are they pinned on as well with dowels? Seems like all the stress from rowing would be focused on that glue joint...

    This is a great looking little boat. I have a question. As the glues you use are water soluble, will the boat withstand prolonged (a week or more) immersion in fresh or salt water? Or will it fall apart?

    • @SRHacksaw
      @SRHacksaw Před rokem

      Barry, the adhesives are NOT water soluble. They are water cleanup, before they cure. Think of concrete -- it's water cleanup before cure, but not "water soluble". Flier is an ultralight boat I built for myself. I would never leave it at a dock for a week, just as I would never leave a fine wood and canvas canoe like that. It only weighs 27 pounds, Just lift it out of the water and turn it upside down on land. It weighs half of what a canoe does. My boat spent an entire year on top of my car, in all weather, and during the Vermont winter, on the ground buried under snow and ice. No problem. See the "Community" section of this channel for photos of it in snow. Camping? Just lift it out of water at the shore and turn it over. I treat my boat properly. Flier is on its 3rd winter now, looking forward to use next spring.
