Thomas Adès - Blanca Variations [Score Video]
Performed by Han Chen.
"A set of five variations on the Ladino folk tune Lavaba la blanca niña, Thomas Adès’s Blanca Variations were commissioned by the 2016 Clara Haskil International Piano Competition. The Variations appear in Act I of The Exterminating Angel, Adès’s opera based on the film by Luis Buñuel, where they are performed by Blanca Delgado, a famous pianist who is one of a number of guests invited to an exclusive dinner after a night at the opera, but who later become unable to leave. In an interview for the Salzburg Festival, where the opera premiered, Adès described the folk tune as displaying ‘an unassuageable harmonic structure very typical of longing and bereavement.’" (programme note)

    Oh hey, I noticed the phrases gradually decrease in length at the start (5 eights, 4 eights, 3 eights, 2 eights, and finally 1 whole) And then start increasing again (2 eights, 3 eights, 4 eights, 5 eights, 6 eights) before the conclusion. Pretty neat!

    I really love that descending 5th modulating thing that has become his “signature,” and I’m happy to see it return in this piece. I hear the first three minutes as “digging,” then when that figure appears it is the “water”. Very effective use of dramatizing harmony, in a way. Adés kicks so much ass! Thank you for this upload.

      I think the weird beaming is there to indicate that the notes are grouped into phrases instead of them being disconnected from each other. Like the two pianos are connected melodically. Either way it does look kind of hilarious lmao

    The section that starts in 1:28 is mind-boggling. I don't understand why Ades would make the cello play triple and quadruple stops at such a tempo, it makes the texture really muddy and any notion of time goes out of the window. The effect these quadruple stops have in the second movement, for instance, is entirely warranted, as the jarring texture is built gradually, as a breaking down of the established piano ostinato. Barring that particular moment in the first movement, the rest of the piece is fantastic. It's good to see contemporary composers who can avoid the tropes of tonality while still delivering thrilling drama. Ades is a gem!

    • @karlpoppins
      @karlpoppins Před 2 měsíci

      Also, the cancan reference in the fourth movement legitimately made me laugh. The 3rd and 4th movements are my favorite, for sure. P.S.: anyone else hear Le Gibet at bars 183-185?

      if its not abundantly clear, in all seriousness, the multiple staves show the different voices more clearly than what would be notated in just two staves. things in the piece are being held for different durational rates, but always relatively simply in their individual groups.
