If only the Air had real speakers on the sides like the 16” pro. Speakers on the 2019 sound way better than the Air M2. They have all that empty space on the sides of the Air it looks bare without the speaker grills

Would be good to mention the OS version on each. For best results, I'd install Catalina on the 2019, as I believe that Big Sur onwards, Apple has been doing some funky stuff that cause the intel macs to run much slower, progressively.

The 15inch Macbook Air M2 256gb has a slower ssd because it is single channel my m1 512 gb memory m1 had a faster hard drive than my m2 15 inch macbook air. It's slightly disappointing when looking at the benchmark but in real world use, I don't think I have really seen a difference. If you have the 512 gb macbook air M2 you will have faster read write speed because they will go over two channels instead of one. I wanted the new M2 because of screen size only. Any used M1 will have pretty much indistinguishable performance between them and M2. Granted the M2 is better on paper, it's just hard to feel the difference unless the seconds really add up and you are doing intense video/photo editing or something of that nature.

I just picked up a mint 16" MBP 2019 i7, with 16GB ram and 500GB drive. In Canadian dollars, I paid $800. A comprably spec'd Macbook Air, with the smaller display and same ram/SSD size, would run around 2k. So for half the cost, I'm happy to run a machine that's roughly 2/3rds the value of a newer Air. Also, I would have avoided the i9 and stuck with i7. Thermal throttling can make the i9 perform worse than the i7, so I've read. When the M4 Air comes out, now that I will get excited about and move up. You predicted support dropping for the 2019 laptop in 2024. Not going to happen so quick. My 2015 lasted me 8 years before Apple dropped support. I would expect the 2019's to be easily supported into 2026.

Thank you for your comment. I was definitely worried about support for future OS's especially since Apple is very keen on leaving Intel way in the past. I am happy that they have confirmed our Macs will receive macOS Sequoia. I have not personally dealt with any issues with thermal throttling, however I use my MBP in a BRYDGE dock 95% of the time and I have a dedicated fan constantly blowing on the bottom of the laptop for extra cooling.

The Airs with minimum specs (8GB RAM and 256GB hard drive) are constrained to only one data channel (PCIE I believe?), meaning that the entire machine is IO bound in terms of compute. Once you step the drive up to 512GB this limitation should disappear, meaning the actual performance constraint at that point is the amount of RAM.

Thank you very much for this! Most comparisons out there on CZcams don’t consider gpu’s performance, I don’t get it… Also, from M2 launch, Apple uses just one nand chip ssd for base models (256Gb) what makes them slower. (But M1 256Gb is 2 nands, putting M1 MB Air as a king in price comparison to any other.)

The 2019 i9 is still an amazing MBP and it's still the computer I use. Hardware wise it's got plenty of good years ahead, for me it just all depends on whether or not Apple continues to support it software wise with Mac OS 15 this coming fall.

That's the big question. I am waiting until October/ November to find out. I'm still using the 2019 MBP as my main computer, if Mac OS 15 is supported I plan to get an eGPU and go another year with it, I only every have problems with my GPU maxing out, the processor still performs great. However, Apple seems to be pretty adamant on leaving Intel behind and I worry it's more than likely going to lose support.

Yea I would need 24gb ram and 2tb which makes it mid 2000’s. Still better than3500 for a MacBook m3 pro chip. I used to need it for game dev stuff so the fans in my i9 were useful, but now it’s just music DAWS so not too demanding. Just wanna be able to run more plugins and this will be less hot, less loud, and last longer
