Here is a video I shot from my room on a sleeper car aboard Amtrak train 14 heading north out of Los Angeles. I am not a professional videographer as can be seen from the video... I had the camera set to ultra wide so the fisheye effect is either cool or not depending on your perspective. But I thought I would share it and see what the reaction was. I highly recommend taking the Amtrak Coast St...

    Like the Spitfire, a thing of lasting beauty. Flew Auckland to Wellington several times as a commercial passenger. Just read some of this planes history, such as fitting an odd wing to fly out from a jungle crash. I have seen a DC3 being used for aerial fertilising, landing and taking off from an ordinary paddock. My clearest, long lasting memory is the oil oozing out of the wing rivets and knowing it’s just fine.

    In 1957 I had the honor of being assigned to fly as radio operator (Morris code days) on a US Navy R4D-8 serial #12437, which was the Navy designation for the DC-3. My flights were around Europe carrying cargo and mail to and from Navy establishments. The Brits referred to the plane as a Super Dakota. We had two assigned to our squadron.

    Long before the now ubiquitous C-130, there was the DC-3, and it's easy to see how the essential design elements of the Dakota inspired the Hercules. Rugged, adaptable, and easily maintained. It's not a stretch to say that plane was instrumental in the outcome of WW2. Soon that design will be a century old and it's still amazing, and FLYING!

      Why?

    • @coleallen3895
      @coleallen3895 Před 3 lety

      @@Cal90208 In June 2019, I took a major Amtrak trip all the way to New York City to celebrate my graduation in which my first leg was from Davis to Portland intended to arrive there on June 16th, then Portland to Chicago via Seattle, then Chicago to NYC. During the first leg, while the train was stopped at Eugene, OR passengers were able to step off the train to stretch their legs (or smoke a cigarette) like usual, however, we were sitting there longer than we expected. During the stop, I said the the assistant conductor (a young guy named AJ who appeared to be in his early 20s) “Are we just going to sit here all day, or are we going to get out of here?”. He told me to be patient, but during that same stop, needing something to fidget with, I reached under the train, got a rock and placed it on the track under the exterior wheels of one of the train cars. A few minutes later, the head conductor (David) yelled at me to “get over here” and he sternly told me that that’s a federal offense (tampering with a train or rail equipment) sounding pretty upset with me and he believed that I was trying to derail the entire train (which I wasn’t). When he asked for my name and where I was going, he said “I’ll remember that name”. After we left Eugene, I was in the Dining Car and while waiting for my food, AJ the assistant conductor saw me and told me to come with him saying his conductor wanted to have a word me. I walked with him, he told me to collect all my stuff from my sleeping car room, then follow him. AJ walked me down to the staff sleeper, the very first car on the train where both him and David told me that they were going to kick me off the train at the next stop, Albany, OR for my behavior which included being rude to staff (asking about whether or not we would be leaving Eugene) as well as for putting a rock on the track which according to AJ is a “big ass NO”. He said that when the train reached Albany in a few minutes, they were going to dump me off the train immediately, no questions asked and that if I wanted to continue up to Portland, I would be required to pay for another ticket. As AJ was escorting me off, he asked me “you want to work for the railroad one day?”. I said no, then he said “good, ‘cause I’ll make sure you never get hired”. I was worried about saying yes, which is true (I do want to eventually work for Amtrak). The other conductor also threatened to have this reported to corporate headquarters in Washington, D.C., so I exited the train in Albany. AJ told the station agent about what happened, and then whoosh! They were out of there, leaving me stranded in Albany. That was the most shameful Amtrak-related moment of my life because I was kicked off a train and given indication by two angry staff members that I would never be able to work for Amtrak now that this happened. I went inside and talked to the station agent, I bought another ticket for an Amtrak bus to take me the rest of the way to Portland, and the station agent assured me that I would be fine as long as I minded my manners and talk to Amtrak staff respectfully. I took the rest of my trip without incident. Some important things I wondered about this were: 1) I’ve seen rocks get crushed by trains on CZcams and all that happens is, the rock gets crushed to pieces, but that doesn’t do a thing to the train, so I’m not exactly sure why they were concerned about me trying to derail the train, and I don’t understand why they were so mad. 2) Why wouldn’t they just give me a warning first instead of kicking me off the train on the first offense? If I had been able to explain, they would probably not have been compelled to kick me off. 3) I’ve worked in customer service for a while now. At the time, I was employed at a local Taco Bell in Davis, CA where we’ve had a number of rude customers, but we never kicked them out of the store for being rude and if we ever kicked anyone out of the store, it would have been because we asked them more than once to stop doing what they were doing to disturb our business, and Amtrak unfortunately has had rude staff working on the trains, so I don’t understand why they would tolerate rude staff, but not rude passengers, or why being rude would be a depending factor of me being kicked off the train. I also don’t understand how it’s rude to ask “are we just going to sit here all day, or are we going to get out of here?”. 4) If you were an Amtrak conductor, would you ever kick a passenger off the train for something like that, or would you give a warning first? Please give your thoughts

      @Cal90208 Před 3 lety

      @@coleallen3895 Unfortunately Amtrak has some very terrible employees such as those. Now while I would not have advised you to mess with the rock (I personally wouldn’t do that) I don’t think it was nearly enough to get kicked off. Amtrak really needs to work on their customer service. And I doubt they’d be able to make you aren’t hired.
