Welcome to Rhyno’s Garage. My name is Ryan, aka “Rhyno”, and I’m here to show you the ropes on car fixes, garage updates, and auto restorations that I’m working through. I’m passionate about cars and fixing things yourself - and I want to show everyone that a little time and elbow grease can go a long way.
From how to change your oil and replacing air shocks to basic tool advice and tricks, I hope you find these videos helpful, insightful, and fun. And if you want some extra credit, check out the videos for the rebuild of my 1997 Pontiac Firebird Formula.
To sum it all up: I’m just a big dumb animal that shows you really can DIY when it comes to your car repairs and projects…and most importantly, get back on the road. Hey, it may not get done fast (and maybe not even done "right") but it'll get done!
Make sure to check out my links below and feel free to leave any questions, comments, or ideas on future projects. Let’s do this!!

Pop-up Headlight Door Adjustment 93-97 Firebird
After a complete disassembly and reassembly of the front end of the Firebird, the headlight doors and housing needed a little adjustment. And, probably, after 25-plus years, it may have needed it anyway.
Here's how you adjust the angle and rotation of the housing so the headlight doors will sit flush. This video is on a 1997 Firebird, but any car with pop up headlights like this will have a similar adjustment method.

Final prep for paint on the Firebird bumper. Got it primed and ready, or so I thought, and then found a bunch of spider-web type cracks! Ok what the pulley at the very top that’s one that turns then stops
Got the P06DE on mine, just swapped out the sensor and definitely was a PITA!
My auto repair guy says this is makeing my check engine light come on
It can, yes. Mine didn’t for some reason.
@rhynosgarage thanks for replying it turned self off
If you've been getting red paint as soon as you hit the finish with sand paper someone must've done a MAACO job on the car. GM hasn't messed around with single stage finishes in YEARS. (Like since the late 80's) It's a cheap fix for a solid color, but I still prefer a base/clear for everything. Show cars used to get super high gloss with solid colors by sanding between coats with a fine grit to get it flat...then final coats with a finish sand and polish. (That's where the term "color sanding" originated)
Great video my brother. I was stuck in Wendy's parking lot. Ran up the road(literally) to Advanced auto and fixed it. Easy peasy. Thanks
Nice work!
Lmao
I have the same gun and did the same thing this past Saturday
The guy you saw must have been paint society lol
I think it was, actually!
Thx a lot
You're welcome!
I painted my bumper and fenders 94 Bird
Nice. How'd it go (hopefully better than mine...haha)
@@rhynosgarage Did the hood twice, bumper twice and fenders once. Had solvent pop on the bumper and hood. Then I dripped sweat on them the second time. Been in the high 90's in NW Ohio. I'm also painting black single stage, fenders came out nice. Your bird is looking good.
@@joedowe9412 yeah, in hindsight I should have just redone it. I ended up sanding and polishing and got it...good enough for now. But dang it was a lot of work to get there. Thanks!
I painted for over 20 years, and have NEVER used a 2.5 tip. A few pointers... 1. Always follow the paint directions. If they said 1:1, that's their formula. 2. Don't spray a hood side to side. Spray front to back, you can reach farther. And always keep a wet edge. 3. Wax and grease remover is not a good idea for plastics. They make an alcohol based solvent for plastic parts. 4. That fender should not show any breakthrough, if you're "ready for paint". You should at least have a sealer of some kind, to make it uniform, and for adhesion. If you were wetsanding your basecoat, then you would have been good to wait for more color...you should lightly recoat after color sanding, anyway. 5. Don't pull/hold the trigger the whole time, let up off the trigger at the end of the panel. 6. Gun setup is important...wide open is not the answer. Pour from the side and back of the gallon...you won't get that "glug, glug" sloshing of the paint/reducer. I don't know what you finish sanded in, but you should not see scratches under the new finish that you "hope clear will cover". Love those cars. Best of luck. If you have any questions on correction feel free to ask.
First of all…thanks for a ton of info! Secondly, for my first ever paint job, that’s not too bad a list of the things I got wrong. Actually a lot of that I learned already…and then totally forgot all of it once I started. Like all the info just fell out my head. (facepalm)
Update: I just got the paperwork out and with the Advantage model (you get what you pay for) the warranty period is 2 years only. But I did find a place selling new outdoor units, same model as mine, for $230. So I think I'm going to just buy that and try to find an HVAC place that will charge it. I'm in a similar pickle. However, in my case it is a MrCool Advantage, which is similar to the DIY (12K BTU, 220 V), but without the charged line. So it was $400 cheaper 4.5 years ago, but I paid $400 to get it charged by a pro. And I preferred that because they shortened the lines, improved the flares and charged. They were at my house at least 2 hours doing all of it. Two guys. Now, I noticed the past month or so, in N. TX, I was getting intermittent days where the cooling wasn't happening, especially at the westerly heat of the day. And I would do some SC function or power off and on and it would get it going again. Today, 6/22, things went sour. It got real warm and wasn't cooling enough. I tried powering off the breaker for 5 min to the outdoor unit and on again. Still no joy. An hour later I got the EC error. And it powers the system off with that. I tried to do the breaker power off again, it cleared the error, but the temp was still warm, and, an hour later, a second EC. My fear is my HVAC guy for years tells me now they decided, since like a year ago, that they won't work on MrCool anymore and they have a laundry list of ones they will work on. Which is pretty irritating since they originally did the charge. And a second company told me they won't work on mini splits. And of course, it was Saturday, so good luck contacting anyone. I sent a message to MrCool support line and like you, I have the 5 year warranty. But I guess I will have to prove it's bad first. Meanwhile, since it cools a music studio, I had to move 4 guitars out of there into the house to protect them from the heat. I hope I can find someone who will work on it.
Wow, that's quite the ordeal. Good luck, I hope you get it worked out!
Everything is a work in progress. I give you a thumbs up for trying and posting.
Thanks!
My TB trans went out last week and the shop wanted nearly 3k to fix it which I can't afford. I felt hopeless. I got a $600 rebuilt one, watched your video a few times, and had the confidence to do it myself. Took me nearly a week of messing with it when I could, but I got it done and back on the road. Thank you!
Whatever it takes, right? Good work!
Easy from underneath once the starter is removed, starter just takes a couple bolts and a couple nuts for the wires. Then it’s cake 👍
Yeah, I've heard that a lot. I got it the hard way, but now that I look at that yeah that would have been a lot easier. Live and learn!
Thanks for the video, nicely done. I'm considering using the same tile in my garage at the Jersey Shore which is not temperature controlled. In your video, I noticed what seems to be a slight gap between tiles. My concern is can water get between the "cracks" and seep under the tiles, especially when mopping the floor? Also, being at the shore, people have sand on their feet. Would sand likely get stuck between the tiles "in the crack" especially when sweeping the tiles clean. I hope you are still monitoring your video as I see it is now 2 years old. How are the tiles holding up? Do they scratch easily?
I’ve actually thought about doing a follow up on this. Yes, there are gaps, and they do get dirt and debris in them that’s hard to get out. I still like it. Looks great. But if I do the rest of the shop, I’ll do the style that is porous where I can vacuum through them better. And they’re easier to pull up and clean underneath. The reality is though I’d probably rather have a legit professional epoxy floor.
@@rhynosgarage Thanks for the quick reply. (less than 24 hrs...that's great) Now, I'm really torn with using this product where I have the potential of sand getting between the tiles over time. This product looks great (they sent me a sample), but the other (cheaper) industrial coin flooring they say doesn't have such gaps between tiles. I need it to look good as I am primarily using the space for 'living' but only in the summertime. If anyone knows of a product that might fit my needs, please post.
@@bans8196 Yeah that's all I've done is basically living space (office/lounge) but there's no divider between the shop area and the living area and the shop area gets pretty dusty and dirty. I did get a small hard floor vac and that seems to help a lot with those cracks. But yeah, the cracks are wider than I'd have liked.
Enjoyed seeing this repair! I had to replace a taillight on my 94 Formula back in the day. Bought a matching pair on E-bay and sold the extra taillight. I always liked the look of these taillights.
Thanks, brother.
Well done. Going to be doing the same on my 2004 Buick Ranier.
Good luck to ya!
Can this car be fitted with a KITT light bar?
Probably with a Ram Air hood.
yeah, one in each intake port. Only thing better than a KITT light bar...is TWO KITT light bars. Right? Wait, maybe not.
I am really enjoying this Firebird series. These are beautiful cars. It is amazing how expensive these tail lights are on eBay, especially for the 1998-2002 honeycomb ones.
Yeah, I was pretty shocked at the prices. Thanks for watching!
Excellent video!😊
This is a great video, thank you for sharing
Can you show which post it goes On?
You use the "S" terminal as described in the video at 01:49. Exactly which terminal that is depends on the make of the vehicle.
I am working on a 41 ford 2 ton flathead 48 to 53 in her. I'll try this tomorrow
This is a great review, thank you. I'm the occasional DIYer, so the overly fancy interface appeals to me 😅
Go under move your starter
Is it a formula or do you just like the formula bumper? Nice job by the way I am currently on a very similar project. 👍
@DrDepressed-so8un Yeah, it's a Formula model. Thanks, and good luck on your project!
That's a price point that would work for me.
Inverted torx
I bought the D8 but then returned it because I could not justify paying $500 for it. Works okay but the price is too high for a dated Android 8 scanner. I ended up buying the D7 recently for about $277 on TEMU of all places lol. It has android 12 and pretty much does everything the D8 does for almost half the price. I plan on keeping this one because the price seems fair.
I came across the same issue with the tubing on the old compressor to the new. Followed your lead and it worked out great. Thanks for the helpful video.
You're welcome! Glad it helped.
You may not get a ton of views, but as the owner of a 1998 Firebird and the original owner of a 2002 Formula, I do enjoy and appreciate these videos.
Thanks brother!
Watch some your video's, I'm doing a 94 Formula front end damage. Parts are getting hard to find. I just primed the hood, bumper and fenders. I only work on mind about 8 to 10 hours a week.
Same here. An hour here, and hour there. Maybe a few on the weekends. Got a regular day job that keeps me pretty busy. Just stick with it. You’ll get there!
Front should be 1/4 inch lower than back of blade for proper cut and ejection of grass
Interesting... The entire deck should be slanted forward? Or the blades?
@rhynosgarage the entire deck will be canted forward. Im actually doing this with an old 2000 lazer z (60 inch). There's like an inch difference from left to right. But it does have a cant from front to back
@@js1465 yes you’ll have to reset that pivot so the quarter inch is front to back and yes the whole deck not the blades hahaha
One other thing distance of those springs should be 11.5 inches end of spring to the other end of spring then make your adjustments
I had to do almost the same thing and was pretty successful. So when you paint Kaylon colonial red is the perfect match painted the entire red of machine looks new is what I have been told doesn’t look like a 16 yr old unit.
Good info. I've considered repainting the whole thing some day so it all looks uniform.
Just a correction paint is Rust-Oleum Colonial Red!
Thanks for trying that out!! I have a cracked bumper that should work on.
Good luck!
From underneath
Brother, I tried from underneath and I could not get there.
Promo_SM 😄
Thank you
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
I just did that job. BTW , the socket they sell will not work -better to remove the oil temp sender (will be really tight) and open up a 1” box wrench for the pressure sender (1 ⅙” box/27 mm will slip - why can't they just make standard hex on these things?)
Because they hate us, Chris. The simply hate us. Thanks for watching though, hope it helped!
Did you figure it out? I got the same message when i tried to turn it on for the first time this season. Third year with it. Has worked great until now. Blowing air but not cooling
Yeah the error code is for low refrigerant pressure. Had a leak in the condenser coil. In my case MRCOOL replaced it under warranty (there’s an updated video on my channel about it).
You are an absolute life saver. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
That was some good final thoughts. Good luck with your procedure, hope you recover quickly!
Thanks!
You can write off your electricity for your business cant you?
I'm barely a backyard mechanic...certainly not a "backyard accountant", but I think one has to have actual income to get an income deduction.
What a stupid set up! 🙄 The could have made it out of metal and it would have lasted as long as the vehicle!
It is a flexible joint, so it would still need some sort of non-metal bushing or it would bind up and wear out faster. But they should have used a higher quality poly material than they did, for sure.
I have the same issue. Did u ever get it working?
The deck lift? No. Just pounded it to the spot where I wanted it and left it.
Did you have any DIC? scan for codes?
Annoyingly no. No codes. But when I tried to kick the compressor on with my bidirectional scanner, it wouldn’t come on. And it was pretty obvious that the shocks were bad.
How’d you get the transmission under the truck on the transmission jack?
The truck was up on jack stands, but I still had to tip the tail up a bit to angle the bell housing under it.
I, for one, appreciate the talking. You convinced me to to take the Jeep to a mechanic. I lack grace and dexterity so I absolutely will not be able to get my ham hock hands in these spots and get this done. Thank you for this video.
Thanks! Knowing your limits is a good thing...at least that's what I've heard. I just ignore that and get into trouble sometimes. Thanks for watching. Good luck with your rig.
Sitting here watching the show and just looking like a Cheshire cat. No one in our shop does body work anymore. The supervisor farms it out because we all hate doing it. Great video you really have an awesome attitude at trying new stuff and then throwing it out on the tube. Happy I found your channel.
It really is kinda crappy work. But, I’m on a budget. So… Thanks for watching though! Appreciate ya.
Perfect! It's exactly what was wrong! Thank you!
Glad it helped!
That was the easiest repair job I'd ever done! 😅
Had a senior get stuck at underground parking lot entrance due to this exact reason. Thanks for the vid for quick fix. These types videos mean a lot to folks that can google it up for quick for vs full tow cost. Appreciate it.
That's what I hope to do. Thanks for watching and for the kind words!
