As a child, how do you want to decide what you will need in the future? I understand your parents don't value education for themselves, but don't ruin the kids future. They choose a simple life without ambition for you, something you should have had the optin to do it or do differently

You won’t know if you like math unless you do extended math up to algebra at least….I loved math. But I never knew I’d be good at it until I did as much math as I did. Same for other subjects such as writing… I hate to write but I was good at it in school. But if I wasn’t forced to write I would never have written to the extent I wrote, or gotten the experience.

Everything wrong with this “documentary” and the ideology around it: 1. Learning is “part of life,” but in order to learn enough to be an intelligent, well rounded and capable individual, it is very rare that you will get that type of exposure within your own household. You want to be an engineer? You’re gonna need to start with algebra, then calculus, and it builds on itself over time. You want to be a lawyer? You’re going to need upper level reading comprehension. Scientist? Need to be able to write reports with accurate and professional dictation. It goes on and on. All of that comes with challenging yourself within a school curriculum. It’s a gradual process that is proven to work. And it’s quite arrogant of you to think you can teach your kids better than someone who got a masters degree to teach someone of your child’s age how to spell. 2. Kids being “self directed” and “consenting” in what they do and don’t want to learn takes away the discipline they need to succeed in life. Humans naturally lean into what’s comfortable, regardless of what age. You’d be hard pressed to find a kid that would rather do their times tables than sit on TikTok. But that same kid, if pushed to do something, might find they have a knack for it and want to pursue it more despite the challenges. But if they never go through that initial discomfort, they’ll never know. And the older they get, the further behind they get and their chances of catching up get worse and worse. Life is hard and bosses don’t give a crap about your “consent” to do things you don’t want to do or show up to work on time. You’re therefore setting them up with unrealistic expectations that the world is going to coddle them and failure. 3. 8:20 So your kids wake up late, prepare their own breakfast and spend the day doing whatever they want? Sounds like you’re just a lazy parent. How are these kids getting AT ALL prepared for the real world? Does she just expect them to wake up one day at 18 and change their entire lifestyle and magically be ready to work and responsibilities? This should be considered child abuse.

I’m going to be real with you here because everyone else in the comments is trying to believe the “unschooling” ideology when it’s critically flawed. First off, can see why you’re “unmotivated” about going to college, because your unschooled ass is going to get a rude awakening when you do. They are going to make you work hard, adhere to a schedule and study things you aren’t necessarily interested in. And what will happen if you do happen to go and get a film degree? Do you really think you’re going to be working on sets filming sitcoms or even local news right out the gate? Nooo way. Most people who get liberal arts degrees end up having to get normal 9-5’s while they try to find an opening in their passion, sometimes for years. And these are jobs you will have to wake up early for, and again do things you won’t “want to do.” You’re lucky you have had some formal education because you don’t sound like a complete idiot. The issue here is that there’s people who watch your videos who don’t trust the education system and pull their kids out of school to give free reign to “learn at their own pace,” but don’t actually have any curriculum in place so they end up with DUMB KIDS WHO ARE TOO UNDISCIPLINED IN THE REAL WORLD. They see you as “proof” that this flawed ideology works. I’d be interested how the last 2 years has changed your life now that you’re an adult. Sh*t doesn’t get easier from here so best of luck.

unschooling sounds like something an 8 year old would want. no school, just learning by themselves, when they want, get to stay home and play video games for the rest of the day. Then you’d laugh it off because it’s ridiculous and say he still has to go to school.

Some kids like me can't just learn to read naturally. My parents read me heaps of books, I listened to audiobooks every night, there was always books around, and yet unlike my peers, even in school (albeit Steiner school) I could not read until I received intensive support and private tutoring. I think it would be kind of cool if you could do a semi-unschooled semi-school thing or something where you only go to school 3 days so then you still get the basics whilst having more time and freedom. Also, with your unschooling, what happens with weekends? Is it just like any other day for you?

I think there are definitely benefits to unschooling, but I don't think I could cope with the lack of structured routine and also school is the only place I socialise so I would probably be even more of a loner. Although, school can be real silly sometimes, and there's a lot unnecessary pressure.

I dropped maths in year 10. In my country it isn't compulsory beyond that point. At the moment I basically only study subjects that I enjoy, namely; literature, history, art, design, a language, and psychology.

It sounds like it is working for you and more similar to what I always understood homeschooling to be. When we hear about kids playing video games for 8 hours a day because unschooling parents don't believe in any rules, that's when it sounds a little scary. It sounds like a lot of work and dedication on your parent's part to ensure you're getting all those learning experiences. I think it takes a very special set of parents for this to be successful, and likely a lot of parents attempting to do so aren't cut out for it.

I've watched the whole thing and a bunch of other content on unschooling and I'm sorry but I have to disagree with it. While homeschooling can be a great thing if done correctly, unschooling comes from complete lack of understanding of human brain development. It's more like parenting with extra steps or, in some cases, just... cave-maning with extra steps. The idea that children can learn everything they need just via experience is completely anti-scientific given how child development works. To survive, thrive and be a responsible member of modern society, humans need to learn things such as discipline, focus, advanced skills of some sort, strict routines and - most importantly - children need to be forced to learn things they normally wouldn't feel any need to learn out of their own interest. Even this video makes unschooling look like a completely irresponsible, intellectual abuse. I hope it will somehow work out for you but... generally this seems like a terrible idea. And that's coming from someone who absolutely despises education system, especially in America.

If the parent is lazy this is just an excuse to ignore their kids... I am about to be given custody of 2 grandchildren ages 7 and 9 and they cannot even read or do simple math. My daughter claims to be "Unschooling" them... She is just ignoring them. I like the idea of it, but the application is lacking.

It’s a disgustingly crippling ideology for the kids involved. It’s rooted in a parents narcissism that they can “teach their child better” and distrust for the “system.” Half the people advocating for unschooling can barely articulate in their words. Then he added these clips in the 50s to make school seem “scary” and “stifling.” It’s manipulative bullsh*t.

There are a lot of benefits to using unconventional learning and working WITH a person's interests. Experiences give life a richness that structured education won't. Like many aspects of humanness, it has complexities that at least need to be acknowledged. There are risks. It can work with families who are very involved and with children who aren't as likely to need specialized instruction. Some children do need the support of educators with experience in neurodistinctive learning differences. There is also a risk for this approach supporting family dysfunction or child maltreatment, especially when there is no oversight or objective sources to recognize when something is off. Ive taught child development for 25 years at the college level and I can agree with some of the premise of unschooling while I can also recognize benefits to structure in learning.

Weirdly enough, school has done a lot of good for me. For some reason, I like things when I'm forced into doing it after a certain amount of time doing it by myself. Cleaning is great example, I used to hate cleaning, I was always forced to do it. Now I like it for some reason. Studying or learning outside of school has never been a problem, my older brothers did a good job on teaching me that learning in school (Bad) does not equal to learning by my own free will (Good). But yea, I still study for school, and I for some reason love that too... Forget everything I said, I will eventually love something I hate if I do it long enough.

I was homeschooled. I always had homework because my schooling was at home. I then tried unschooling. I would sleep until nine, get the mail, eat Coco Puffs, smoke a Fatboy and call it a day. My dad kicked me out for being lazy and unmotivated. I told him I was attending an unschooling college at home. He told me to get a job because I was unemployed. What is wrong with this guy?

When you stack this up against all your prior work, it's quite an evolution and achievement, Ben! At the same time, for me, there was a nagging sense of how much farther this documentation could go--and I would imagine this isn't unfamiliar territory. Filming in person, rather than through video call is surely one aspect, but then also being able to encompass the wider breadth of unschoolers out there, what this kind of education looks and feels like, the context for and ramifications of it...Well, I guess there will, and should, always be further ambitions--and, indeed, the growth that has occurred up to now doesn't cease here :)

There’s so much wrong information circulating about unschooling, from in and outside the homeschooling community. Unschooling isn’t about NOT teaching your kids; it’s about teaching them to how to love learning. Then they are equipped to take on academics when they are ready. I don’t get what’s controversial about that.

I am doing this for my kids when I become a parent or doing homeschooling. I personally feel much of the current educational establishment is this confusing mix of half partying/wasting time and half intense study. I feel like it robbed me of the opportunity to really develop my interests in my youth and become a more well rounded person.
