There was a scoreboard for this match in Atlanta. Talked to the players, they said that they didn't know there was a scoreboard.... It was 40 feet away from them 😅

Great observation. Did not catch it when I was rewatching. Definitely have to blame the observers more than the players though
I will always put responsibility on the players first, the game is self-officiated. But we may just disagree on where the sport should go vs where it is.
@@bdantowitz the players suffer the consequences, but I do think the observers should have the capacity to remember this and correct serving order errors. Unfortunately when you get a game with observers, you mentally turn over that responsibility to them so you can focus on the game itself. At least that's been my experience.
@@ryanfitz95 I see that as a player culture gap. I see anything observers do as a bonus (even if important value add) on remembering score, serving order, protecting players from infractions missed with their active calls, and settling disputes through passive calls. I would honestly defer to precedent used in other self officiated sports that have observers (curling and ultimate are the two I know that come to mind)… the players retain a lot of ownership over the subtleties even when playing at a high level and they have observers (maybe officials in curling?) covering the game too.
Definitely might be different for different people, but I feel like the observer responsibilities are pretty explicit rn, with nothing being mentioned about tracking score and serving order. Now that's in the updated guidelines, so I wouldn't be surprised if prior to the updated guidelines it was common practice for observers to cover this.
