    I learned to fly in a Rallye 100 40+ years ago, but some of the knobs and switches were in different places. What is the red knob above the oil temp gauge? And the two white knobs further to the left? And yet another white one beside the left-hand throttle? And where is the flaps switch - below the central throttle, I suppose...? "Bimble about", yes, that is what I used to do and would like to be doing today! Thank you!

      This was my favourite plane, ever. Alas, got broken up for spares a couple of years ago after the engine came to end of it's life. The red knob, as I recall was mixture, and the two white ones are cabin air and cabin heat. The flap lever was a handbrake job. I miss this little tin parachute.

      @@welshspaceagency We had one two-seat version with a "handbrake" flap lever which I got to like as it was more definite than pressing the switch and counting 2 seconds! That was the favourite for soloing in. It was corrosion from fertilizers spread on the airfield over the years that finished all our planes. They were very safe aircraft, hard to spin but fun to fly. The LE slats used to scare some passengers as they didn't know who was moving them!

    How wonderfully eccentric! But seriously, these once ubiquitous structures followed one's every mile, whether travelling by road or by rail; on the road they helped predict a hidden bend whilst by rail, the rhythmic rise and fall of the wires helped lull one off to sleep, aided by the steam heated warmth and the regular clickerty-click of the rails. Now, as an active railway modeller, I am most mindful of the individuality of these sentinels. There is no such thing as a standard telegraph pole! Ignorethem at your peril!

    The carved markings on each pole - three lines of 2-3 characters. 1st line: Owner (GPO or BT) 2nd line: pole type. Length in feet (later in metres) and a letter (L, M or H - Light, Medium or Heavy [some regions had S for Stout]). So a 10M is a 10-metre Medium load pole. 3rd line: Year of production. So at 1:22 there's a pole marked GPO / 30M / 60, which translates as a GPO pole, size 30' Medium from 1960.

    Winston Churchill said before our U. S. Congress that "Great Britain and the United States were divided by a common language." How so true. Although, it is amazing that in North America, the utilities (electric and telcom) are also separated by a common terminology. I found it fascinating that an "H-Frame" for power system parlance was an "H-Fixture" in telephone terminology, for example. I have a book on English Calendar Construction and T. H. Carr's book, "Mains Practice," both published in the 1950s-1960s era. I was amazed at the terminology differences within. Guy wires were called "Stays." "Pylons," in the U. K., we call "Towers" or "Structures." The use of the term, "Kiosks," which is used on British Pathe news reels about the CEG Board transmission line construction, we call "unit substations" or "enclosures." Very, very interesting that two countries could have such unique nomenclature for these identical terms.

Wonderful video with fine photographic shots of rural aerial wire structures. I can recall as a child seeing old movies about England, Scotland and Wales (Ire, too) and seeing the steel crossarm brackets supporting two porcelain insulators on each side of a railway line pole. White porcelain and very little glass. In North America, glass for telephone and railway open wire is king. Please see www.the-electric-orphanage.com for a website on open wire in this country. Meanwhile, I will greatly enjoy and find encouraging, your pursuit of older telecom artifacts of the "outside plant" category. I love your video!

      @765kvline Před 3 lety

      In North America, treatment of a typical Southern Yellow Pine Class 3 45' pole will last 60 years under standard conditions. That's pretty reliable information. If the pressure treated pole is poorly manufactured, you can have "shell rot" which is where the sides of the pole from top to bottom have "flaking" sections of outside wood cracking free of the core. In the U. S. we experimented with concrete poles and placed many of them for electric utility and telecom with some success. Their drawbacks were plenty. Extremely heavy, difficult to make changes (unlike wooden poles) once the pole was in the "field", and expensive. Some of the first concrete power poles used in the Americas go back to the Panama Canal construction, where they were smaller but were used to successful effect. Spalling will occur on concrete over time, but concrete doesn't rot at the base typically and because of their weight, do not require guying (or stays). What structures are now being successfully implemented are "composite poles." These are made of wooden strips pressure glued, like plywood only in long lengths. There are many new installations and they seem to be holding up quite well. Because they are rectangular from top to bottom, it is like sticking a wide stick in the ground and the ability for it to turn or radically twist is made impossible by stress on top of the pole.
