The Most Dangerous Tool I've Restored [Restoration]
This restoration is on a "ZON" bird cannon made by the B.M. Lawrence & Co. of San Francisco, CA, USA in the 1950s. This tool is also called an automatic scarecrow, carbide cannon, bird scarer, or orchard cannon and cost $60 USD in 1955 which is about $750 USD today. You can view the original patent here: patents.google.com/patent/US3056376
The cannon works by the user mixing calcium carbide and water to create acetylene gas. Once the gas builds up to a certain amount, it is emptied into the explosion chamber and a flint is struck, igniting the gas and creating an extremely loud sound in hopes of scaring away birds and apparently human ears.
This is the most dangerous tool I have restored thus far. The risk of creating shrapnel was present and real during every restoration decision. The main rubber diaphragm was completely rotten and needed replacing, but if I did not find rubber with equivalent thickness, strength, elasticity, and resistance to acetylene, I could accidentally create a massive problem for my limbs. If the restored firing mechanism jams, it may allow for multiple doses of acetylene to enter the chamber, and remove my face. If I accidentally let water enter down the pressure equalization tube in the calcium carbide chamber while moving it around, it could go off while I am holding it, making me deaf for life.
Modern equivalents are made today, but use propane instead.
I'd like to thank @CRCAutoUS for sponsoring this video. I've switched to a food-grade penetrating oil from them as a more safe alternative, and it as worked just as well as the usual penetrating oils I've used.

Someone paid an equivalent of $2000 for this in 1914 [Restoration]
zhlédnutí 946KPřed měsícem
This machine has the most odd combination of functions I've ever come across. It was made in 1914 by the F. Bissell Company of Toledo, Ohio, U.S.A. and combines a vacuum, grinder, buffer, blower, and pulley. The tool is so old that this would have been one of the first introductions to an electric motor that a household would have had. These are quite rare and I had a very difficult internal st...
Why Did They Stop Making These? [Restoration]

This 1930s Leland Electric Co. throttle variable speed and direction electric motor is one of the coolest tools I have restored. The restoration was fairly straight forward, but the mechanics of how this works were the most interesting. I give a quick explanation near the end of the video on how I believe this works, but if you specifically know, please leave a comment below. The tag was in the...

Possibly the best example of something everyone wants but no one needs. I came across this patent for a pistol grip wrench while randomly scrolling through an antique tool group where someone made a post saying they found a production model of this wrench made by the Rex Engineering Co.. Immediately intrigued, I messaged the person who had it and asked if they wanted to sell it, to which they n...
Rare Bow Chainsaw [Restoration]

This restoration is on the first gasoline-powered one-man bow chainsaw ever produced. It was made by Precision Part Ltd. of Montreal, Canada in the 1940s. It took me 5 years to find 3 separate dilapidated chainsaw motors, 2 bow bars, 1 straight bar, and 2 chains just to source all the parts to restore one function chainsaw. Unfortunately, the most complete motor happened to also be completely s...

This restoration is on a 1912 door lock mortising machine called the Champion Mortiser by J. Leukart Manufacturing Co. of Columbus, Ohio, USA. The original patent can be seen here: patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/c3/17/6c/8079b652ead2f8/US1037939.pdf Mortising machines are among some of my favourite tools to restore as they all seem to have high levels of gizmosity. The amount of mechanical...

Shift the brushes relative to the field coils, and change direction of rotation; a repulsion-induction single-phase motor... We had one of these w/ a right-angle gear reducer, put a little cable drum on it, bolted it onto a flatbed pickup w/ a little rotating davit on it, and hand-dug a couple of wells to 35'. It was strong enough to lift out a cut-down 1/4 barrel of spoil, ride in and out of the well, and unload and place the well-rings. We always cut the power before reversing direction. A little carbon tetra chloride on a bit of cloth on a stick was sufficient to clean the commutator and ensure excellent performance.
You continue to amaze me. Thanks for sharing your talent!!
Not worth saving obsolete
I wouldn't trust that electrical separation as far as I could throw it... Also, why on earth do you not wear gloves using the spinning brush? You know how it flicked the workpiece? Now imagine that is your fingernail.
So glad u saved it. Sweet motor
Can you lock the casters so when you are sharpening your knife after vacuming or doing a belt driven PTO you dont accidentally kill yourself ?

Knew some guys back in the day inflated a round bale bag with oxy acetylene. Fired it with a 12v battery and some dodgy wiring just for laughs they set it off behind the shipping container we were taking a tea break in. We were unfazed but there was a puddle of tea in front of each of us.
My favorite is still the explosive stomping... jumping... Whatever that crazy thing was, you know the one.
The ZON cannons were not made by BM Lawrence, but by Dazon in Maastricht Holland. Lawrence was just the US distributor. I donated the last new carbide cannon to a local museum in Stockton CA in 1993. Dazon still builds cannons, but the are now powered by propane and are not quite as loud. The carbide version exceeded 130db.
sooo, 'sposives!
And who thought this was a good idea?
Haven’t watched it, already know I’ll love it.
Shake hands with danger ! That was awesome.
The Gizmosity...?🤣🤣🤣🤣 Love it!
I couldn’t figure for the death of me what that device was at first; an 1800s steampunk flame cannon maybe? 🤔
Avalanch cannon ? ? ?
something, something, calcium cannons...
Wasn't the reason for this to scare birds away?
When I was a kid, we make our own firecrackers with pieces of carbid an a coffee can ... the can was flying about 20 meters high in the air after making the loudest bang I've ever heard 😂
The first few poofs with just a gentle flame and then BAAAAAAM!! Love it! Ps. Dip the tips of the hoses in water with a lil dish soap, as much as we love watching you struggle sometimes it's just too painful.
Mr. Natural knows what it all means.
Gizmosity 👍
Everyone who thinks or feels God doesn't care, is indifferent and or mean etc …. Why is the world as it is, evil everywhere… where is God and His faithfulness… God does judge sin which is evil and if people don't stop sinning they will die for that disobedience, that sin. When God said if you take from that tree you will die He was saying if you disobey, you sin, I will punish that sin because God does punish it, sickness, demons and death. And if you keep sinning I will punish you to the point of death, is that punishment. Sickness is a consequence of sin and it is a judgement God makes upon the people for their sin. All sickness takes its toll on the body and will result in death unless you stop sinning and that brings a reward from God for the righteous decision to stop sinning that brought that illness. Throughout scripture God tells us these things. God does love and there is mercy in His punishment too. He chastises those He loves. His wrath doesn't mean He doesn't love, it doesn't mean there is no mercy, it means He puts His law first and He obeys it first. He punished sin and then punishes sin and so forth and if someone doesn't stop sinning or sins more then that judgment is death just as He said, sin is death. Scripture says we are all responsible for working out our salvation with fear and trembling. Seek scripture, learn who He is and what He said to obey and do it. if you obey Him you live in blessings just like Deuteronomy 28 says and it also says disobedience is curses, that's sickness, demons possibly and again to continue in sin results in death. God told all the details, and paid for us to get out of sin and how we should live and when people don't live righteous then the world looks like it did in the days of Noah, violence, drunkenness and such lovers of self, pleasure and all sin and life apart from God, life in disobedience to God. Why should He bless sin? He punishes it then punishes sin more if someone keeps sinning. Is it tough people die from that choice they make, their sin and lack of seeking God to obey what He said, yes it hurts. How do you think God feels, He loved the world so much He gave His only begotten son and Yeshua died in agony for us to be out of that sin, taking God's wrath upon Himself so how do I think He feels, grieved so grieved but I know from scripture He always obeys what His word says, He never changes and that includes every word He said. Now Yeshua took God's wrath upon Himself for our sin Isaiah 53. We get peace with God and can come before Him to be heard and we get to be cleansed from our iniquities, sin. Just like the lamb sacrifices in the old testament Jesus was that for us a peace offering and forgiveness offering. We get freedom from that sinful past, from that sin and we get our healings because His stripes healed us from the consequences of sin. He gave us a way out. A way to start again out of that wrath. How loving is that God gave us His son who took God's wrath for us out of love. How loving just how loving is our God who made a way for us to be out of that wrath? Wrath we deserved by our sin and continued sin. But God so loved the world He gave us Yeshua. Yeshua gave His life to rise to life for us to give us new life. A new creation to begin again a new life, having been born again. Having received forgiveness for sin and a pardon from God's wrath, that very wrath you talk about. But God gave us a way out of His wrath when Yeshua our lamb paid for our sin. Again how loving is that our way out of God's wrath. Our new life. Our second chance to live rightly before our Holy righteous God our being born again to live right because God planned for us to not all receive His wrath yet His son for everyone, one for everyone and a way out, pardoned and free to live life righteous whole healed delivered, how loving oh so very loving that is. All that is in scripture too. Seek and find, learn who He is and obey and see more of it. Mark 4:24 the more you obey God the more He reveals to you, it means that. Matthew 6:33 live it daily and understand who He is and just how loving He always is and honestly how loved you are will be seen felt and KNOWN too. 💕 May you come to understand Him all your days seeking and finding and growing in the knowledge of God in Yeshua's name
You could hook this up to an ice cream Turner and make a hell of a batch
I call it, the Neighbor Remover 9000. Just add compressed air, acetylene, and after one day, all of your neighbors will move out!
That's a lovely Kaboom-Ator! (Always remember that everything can be a smoke generator if you operate it wrong enough😅!)
ay have been use in Ski Resorts to set-off avalances. Nice Restoration.
Lovely
I have never used metal Lathe but I have always wondered why so much material is cut away instead of purchasing smaller round stock, seems super wasteful and expensive?
In the 1970's we had a Kirby vacuum it had all of those functions too.

@Hand Tool Rescue: just tell me where to send the calcium carbide, i have cans of that stuff from my grandfather just sitting around. He wasn't a miner or a farmer so God only knows what he was doing with it.
Do people send you these tools for restoration or you find them and do a fantastic job of restoring?
We had one of these that we fed with a acetylene torch. It was wicked fun to scare guests.
Well it doesn’t surprise me that you aren’t able to acquire Carbide in Commienada. I have a great story about me that involves Miller beer bottles, Carbide, a pocket knife, a Bic lighter, bottle caps and finally a trip to the Emergency Room for stitches. Oh, and blood, lots of leaks from my body. IT WAS A BLAST! Pun intended.
nice butt-vise!
That's fantastic, how long did it take for the police to turn up once you got it working?
So, I guess the important question is: How far will it shoot a bird? And do they wear the little goggles and a cape?
Do you have to ask to have a shit in Canada today? 😅 On the other hand they will cut balls of 10 year old boys if they ask for it. Mad world.
I restored one of those things about 25 years ago, Mine used LPG gas and near deafened me and cracked a couple of large windows across the road people came out from everywhere wondering what had blown up I joined in after quickly hiding the gas cannon, acted as bewildered as everyone else, not the thing to set off in a tight residential estate.
