Hymn to Celebrate Matariki 2024
Text: Norman E. Brookes
Music: M.C.W. Bell
Hear the word, it’s Matariki,
rising cluster in our sky.
Nine the stars that make this cluster,
speaking now to you and I.
Learn the word, it’s Matariki,
God’s sign in the early dawn,
tribute to those dearly loved ones,
whanau, that today we mourn.
See those stars, it’s Matariki,
cosmic lights that mystify,
We are of that cosmic matter,
stewards of earth, and sea and sky.
Speak the word, it’s Matariki,
time to dream, and hope and pray,
shaping life to face the future,
planning for a better day.
Sing the word, it’s Matariki,
celebrate with family, friends,
share some kai, some joyful moments,
pledge a love that never ends.
Let this sign called Matariki,
clustered, gathered, in the sky,
point us to a grace filled future,
God’s great hope for you and I.

Bach: All Men Are Mortal BWV643 (piano adaptation)

BWV 643 is one of the most perfect examples of Bach's Orgelbüchlein style. A mood of ecstasy permeates this chorale prelude, a funeral hymn reflecting the theme of heavenly joy. The simple cantus firmus sings in crotchets above an accompanying motif of three semiquavers (16th notes) followed by two quavers (eighth notes) that echoes between the two inner parts and the pedal. This figure is also...

By M.C.W. Bell, King's School, Auckland. Original music by A.L. Peace. I had misgivings about “submerging” the rhythm of the tune against sustained notes for the benefit of feeling. An organist could alternatively play that rhythm for the inner parts while maintaining the legato descant in the right hand.

How to approach a “foundation stone” hymn? I decided (unusually) to focus on the organ accompaniment first. The tune is fundamental, thus the organ top line stays with the congregation. That is at the sacrifice of lyricism in the descant.

Thanks, Michael and Norman. I've already made my own harp adaptation to sing this!
Hi Robyn yes I heard about that! Would love to hear it, thanks!
Hello young man A perfect start to a perfect Saturday Tone has a living soul & yet WITHOUT FORM.
Would love to hear this on your grand piano in your work studio 😊😊😊
Very calming
Please how can I get the copy of the descant
Hi please email me at mcwbell@xtra.co.nz
Alleluia! Not as orphans Are we left in sorrow now; Alleluia! He is near us; Faith believes nor questions how. Though the cloud from sight received him When the forty days were o'er, Shall our hearts forget his promise, "I am with you evermore"?
Rather nice
Beautiful 🥰!!
Man this is awesome what a way to spend a rainy summer’s day listening to this buzzy music! Listening to it for the third time. Keep up the good work, Mike;
This is beautiful
What a great vibe Will hope to hear it live sometime;
great work as always! a lovely start to my Saturday;
good stuff dude ! quite uplifting;
Good job keep it up.
Perfect
Oh & I like that little doodly doo thingy at the very end, What do you call it? A trill?
That I think is a mordent my friend (but there’s nothing dark about it)
Mate! That is rad! & D minor too, cousin to my good buddy F major. So good to hear a new clip & nice steady camera work too;
What a sweet tune! I’m sure Robin would dig it the most 😢
Hello Michael, I would love to obtain a number of the scores for the pieces on your page. Are they available for purchase anywhere online? - Micah
Hi Micah yes some of them are. Please email me at mcwbell@xtra.co.nz
Excellent, but given the style of this orchestration (rather romantic), or even independent from that aspect, it would make sense to prolong the final notes a bit more. Even for a baroque piece, the ending as it stands is a bit abrupt.
Yes I totally agree. It’s only these sound generation mechanisms that represent the still-present gap between human feeling and technology.
🤗Always enjoy your videos Mike;
Thanks for this
Mike! Enjoying this wonderful music with my friends with fire roaring on a Friday night. 🤗 Arohanui to you and your family;
this is beautiful!
This is beautiful Michael, is it available for purchase?
Hi Justin thanks it’s not on sounz or anything but I can send the score to you
@@MichaelCWBell That would be so cool Michael - thankyou, I'm justinbirdmusic@gmail.com. I just had a chat about you with my father in law who's an organist. You should have heard him rave about you!
This is so beautiful The photos of Mork especially look so happy. It's so sad.
I made this into a song as well, maybe someone here enjoys it, too! czcams.com/video/g-OUgmoxspk/video.html
Love the ending.
Very attractive. Thanks.
I love this version, it's beautiful. Who is the singer?
Hi it's the composer singing but he doesn't rate himself as one!
Ahh ok, thanks. Well this is my favorite version of Bilbo's Last Song.
@@MichaelCWBell is this you singing Mike? I think the vocals are spot on my bro, I hope you’ll consider singing backing vocals for the Dave Taylor band. I’m sorry to sound so persistent but I think you have a beautiful voice, or to echo your phrase, you have TRUE VOICE;
