Inside the workshops teaching friends, neighbors & political foes to compromise
The U.S. is facing a deep crisis of polarization that is threatening our democracy. From the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol to the recent assassination attempt against Donald Trump, we are seeing that the increasingly bitter, ugly language thrown around in American politics has real life consequences. Words matter.
“Seldom has there been so much rancor in the way we talk to each other and the way we seem to have contempt for people in the other political party,” says David Blankenhorn, President of Braver Angels. “Our great experiment in ordered liberty as a nation will not survive if each half of the country really hates the other half and doesn't even want to talk to each other.”
Braver Angels is a national citizens group that brings together conservatives and liberals to try to understand one another better and find common ground on controversial issues. The organization was founded in 2016, just after the U.S. presidential election.
The name is inspired by Lincoln’s first inaugural address, in which he shares: "The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature."
“Our fundamental model is really quite simple. It's based on people talking to one another face to face,” says Blankenhorn.
Braver Angels’ primary programming is focused on one-on-one conversations and workshops that bring together conservative “Reds” and liberal “Blues” to facilitate respectful conversations. The workshops are designed to facilitate productive conversation and strengthen listening skills in order to build, what Blankenhorn calls “civic friendship,” between people with differing political beliefs.
Blankenhorn says, “We find that if we bring people together face to face, talk to people that they didn't think they would have anything in common with, they want more. It makes them feel better about the possibilities of the country.”
After the 2020 elections, studies found that folks on both sides of the political divide lack trust in American elections - from trust in the election process, to peaceful transfer of power, to voter fraud and voter suppression. The Braver Angels Trustworthy Election Campaign brought together an equal number of ‘Red’ and ‘Blue’ participants at 26 workshops across the country to share open dialogue and to uncover shared values, concerns and solutions around our electoral process.
The final report reflects the collaborative consensus of a team of evenly balanced Red/Blue leaders who analyzed and distilled the points of agreement into a report using language that they all felt comfortable with. They see the report as “a blueprint” of recommendations from citizens that can restore trust in our elections.
Blankenhorn said, “We're now taking this [report] to state officials around the country to say there's a way here.”

What an amazing story! Keep going! You are an inspiration!
You've got a major comment lockdown here. Good luck with the discussion..
Thank you for sharing this!
Great actor Richard Gant. Would love to see him on stage, bet he has a great stage presence. Powerful antagonist in Rocky 5, which in many ways is written like a stage play.
Well done. Definitely s/b taught in schools.
I thought the idea that when we take pleasure in doing what is right, even though it may be difficult or uncomfortable, we can begin to lay the foundations of virtue as a habit. I think in any discussion it takes both sides to engage, but if I can maintain a position that seeks out the good of humanity, I will be better equipped to discuss these current tough topics. I have a long way to go and to learn, but I want to start being part of unifying and not dividing.
We need to compromise on our ethics, values, and morals
The way he treated that little grasshopper (or katie did) told me everything i needed to know about the heart of those farmers.
An insurrection should never happen again!
That you believe there was an insurrection shows you're part of the problem. You believe the government and the media..
Wonderful project! I love our democracy and the progressive work that it can do. I don’t want someone trying to take that away! With that said, I will be voting 💙 There needs to be voting reform, but not taking away the chance to ever vote again!
Excellent video. I was particularly struck by the idea that our form of government, democratic republic, is the form of government that requires the most of its citizens, actively participating with virtue, and that it was more than voting. I never thought of it that way, and that really gave me something to think about. Thanks for posting!
Thanks for watching and for sharing this thoughtful comment!
Great video. Shared! We've become so fractured, it's important we relearn how to just sit and have respectful conversations.
Thank you so much for watching and sharing!

Thailand has the right to protect its sovereignty, culture, tradition and its MONARCHY! The West should be ashamed of undermining Thai Monarchy!
Please PBS... Ask the people you interview how to pronounce their name. Pita Limjaroenrat is not pronounced the way you said it. Just ask, please. Do not read how it's translitterated to latin alphabet, you'll say it wrong everytime. Other than that, great reporting, and I hope you will cover their dissolution and the incoming protest/revolution. People have had enough in Thailand. Old tribalistic views from the military and monarchy protecting the status quo, preventing growth.
Hi Tommy, thanks so much for watching and for your interest in the topic. Name pronunciation discussions were a big part of our post-production effort; a translator and a party staffer were consulted, and ultimately an appropriate version of accuracy, for a non-Thai native speaker, was crafted (While there is no hard R in Thai, the elongated L sound is also not easy to replicate without risk of sounding inauthentic). In fact if you listen closely, you’ll hear at :22 in a clear re-record (the third!) of the line with Parit Wacharasindhu’s name. There is no easy answer, but we do try!
@@TheBIRorg I appreciate your response, thanks for taking the time to reply to my comment, I wasn't expecting it. Thanks again for your excellent reporting!
@@TommyPilon And thanks to you for supporting the PD platform. We believe transparency in news production is important to its legitimacy; we sometimes make mistakes, and are open to considering better ways to do things, too.
Thanks to those courageous people including your channel!
You are a blessing, thank you for all you do
Great reporting by Kira Kay and team, thanks for meeting and interviewing me in Bangkok for this.
Me encanta este contenido vale oro. Gracias!
Fascists like the Heritage Foundation and their Project 2025 need to create confusion and doubt about secured voting in the hope of disuading voters from exercising their freedom to make their choices count. Mail-in ballots are coded and are unique. One John Allen Smith is not going to be sent a ballot for another John Allen Smith! The code enables the voter to track the ballot's journey from post office to the minute and time it is counted! This student election judge program is needed in all cities throughout this nation! The walking tours that explain the vote -counting process is a must in all cities as well! Too many thousands of ballots have been thrown away at the whim of a decision to toss it away because the letter " t" wasn't crossed properly! I have signed scribbles at the point of sale cashier counter with the use of my credit card. How secure is that?! Whether the ballot is mailed or, hand delivered to the ballot drop-off box , the use of the individual barcoding IS the best way to secure the safety of our votes!
This is awesome! More Cities should be showing these types of processes and having tours. With all the controversy transparency is the key.
Thank you!
MAGAt Election deniers have been assigned to swing states. Either get them to step down of they will refuse to certify the Harris victory in 2024.
Its always the U.S. history that's been kept from us which explains what we need to know to understand the world around us. Thank you, heroic historians!
a powerful piece of content or video regarding the lives of healthcare workers, particularly nurses. My aunts are also nurses (retired), one in Canada and the other in the US. My aunts also experienced all the things mentioned by the narrator in the video, so I salute all nurses in the world for their unmeasurable dedication to the nursing profession.

Amazing class, teachers, & of course students. I would've loved to have that chance, & as a student would've loved to get to help such an amazing student, w/such a worthwhile project, idea, & goal.
These homes are beautiful! Congratulations to Kayla Gore and the community that supports new homeowners. Gore's vision is powerful to hear: "That we don't have to do this work anymore. That the playing field has been leveled."
This guy knows very little about the history of Israel’s colonial stealing of Palestinian land and racist terrorism. Because of that, or because he wants to walk the safe middle ground, he’s full of bs.
Thanks for posting! Great conversation
As much as it seems like a voice of reason to many of you, I see a lot of false narrative and pushes the same story that never existed. I am glad this man understands a a lot of what has happened but it is still far from the reality. Unless and until Arabs and their leaders ( with a few exceptions that seem to see the reality) will admit the responsibility they bear in this conflict and it is a huge one, Israel was always on defense. Until they start teaching the real history at the schools and at homes, I don't think there will be any resolution and Israel again will need to fight and win.
LOVE MY HMONG PEOPLE!
Another Zionist
The elephant in the room was never once mentioned. The question of self-determination for Palestinians, the illegal occupation and theft of land, the 75 years of expulsions and oppression was not mentioned. Why Hamas even exists was not considered - like they are just a Jew hating group of Arabs who developed in a vacuum or something. The "story" is in fact usually oversimplified and painted as pure good vs pure evil but this was an attempt to ignore the underlying, festering wounds that led to Oct. 7.
Thank you for saying everything I have been thinking for the last 7 months. As a former anti war protester (Vietnam era), I can’t help thinking the current protesters are doing PR work for a terrible organization (which they will later regret).
2:57 People gave news, in general, the benefit of the doubt... you know what we got? Russia Russia Russia. You know that woke a lot of people up to the idea that news... a lot of it is just outright propaganda. Left, right, doesn't matter. They'll lie to you face for a story and do it repeatedly and loudly for years to try to gaslight you into believing lies as the truth. You want people to trust the news? Good luck. The mainstream whittled away what little good will reporters had left. Cuz the overwhelming majority of it is spin, twofaced cutting board bullshit. Where your good will is returned with misquotes, willful obfuscation, and character assassination. I wouldn't trust a "reporter" or the "news" to do the right thing unless I was explicitly watching their every move.
Reuse and refill infrastructure is more expensive.

She's complaining and trying to track down harmful Plastics but bought a plastic canoe LOL okay
That's the dumbest comment. These are microplastics which cannot be tracked down, and the canoe is big which can be recycled at some point
either you're playing dumb or are intentionally ignorant. you're on the internet, use it to learn basic facts
notice how you're always jumping in to defend some random company that's doing something unconscionable. If most people saw someone dumping plastic beads into a river in broad daylight, they would be shocked at this assault on our mutual drinking/eating system. They're doing it in secret and she's trying to figure it out. The consumption of some plastic products is not the issue here--it the economic system that doesn't value recycled plastic and makes it more economical to make new plastic and discard the old (this is at least in part due to government oil subsidies, because fossil fuel products are used to make plastic).
if the current economic system valued recycled plastic beads just *slightly* more, it would beat out first-time made plastic economically and be the cheaper choice, which would then mean companies wouldn't dump the sht into rivers
What happens when that canoe is dragged on a rocky shore?
