10 More Shades of Panzer Grey - Which Model Paint is the Most Accurate?
I was really happy to see how well my original panzer grey model paint comparison was received, but several of you also pointed out that I had missed several paints.
I remedy that oversight in this video, and I'll put 10 new paints through their paces and score them for historical accuracy.

A note on photos: Germay was leading in the world in color photography, but developing film with color was insanely expensive, so it was rarely used, except by certain richer individuals (Rommel being one, he had got a color camera by Göring as a birthday present) and the propaganda company. And they did produce some excellent photos of among other things, tanks in RAL 7021, and from those one can see that the color is so close to black one can come without actually getting there. And here I think I have to object to using the box as a reference: yes, it is indeed dark grey, but I'm not so sure its RAL 7021 to be honest - it could be RAL 7009 for example. The reason why I'm wondering about the authencity of the color of the box is because field items (like boxes) did not go through the same manufacturing process as tanks, which is also why German field equipment like gasmask canisters, helmets, bottle cups, etc were different colors as well. One would think the most streamlined paint process would have been to just send everything metal to the paint booths of the tank factories, but that didn't happen obviously.
I wonder if Vallejo has changed their formulas and range? The Vallejo primer I have (74603) looks perfect as RAL 7021 and looks nothing like 79862. Interestingly enough, there is another color called German Grey (70995) but it is actually RAL 7016 and also look very close to the primer.
@@Kojak0 I haven’t seen anything to indicate that Vallejo has changed their colours… I covered their German Grey (RAL 7016 as you mention) in my first video on panzer grey paints. It’s a bit too light (as you’d expect for RAL 7016) and a bit too neutral.
How are you doing? Enjoy your videos but haven't seen any in a while (obviously). Take care.

How about the Italeri 4795ap??
I would add Gaia notes 221 German grey up with MRP for the top spot. It is spot on.
Thanks for all the hard work Bruce. This was very helpful. At this time (Jan 24 ) MRP Tank Grey is nowhere to be found in the USA.. but I have some 3rd GEN on the way.
Thanks. Great work. I knew a number of ww2 vets who were into Squadron AC colors from the 30s. ( one a professional photographer of the old school) Their discussions (and my photography classes) got me into realizing how much B&W and Color photos of the period can greatly alter the look of colors. B&W film ( and Photo paper) actually trys to give an overall gray tone to the finished photo meaning the same item can look dark in one photo and light in another photo taken at the same time especially from a different light angle. . It is way more complicated and not intuitive. So thinking a dark photo is dark or a light photo is light in its actual color is usually not the case. This is not including the influence of different films and speeds. I only mention this as few people are aware of this now a days photography has changed . It really is not a simple thing to use a photo as proof of a color. I am no expert but I know B&W photos can be very deceiving .
Thanks for sharing your experiences. Yes, it’s sometimes hard to convince people that just because something looks light or dark in a photo that the real object wasn’t necessarily the same. 😀
Sun fade is real with grey and black. Especially, with roofs.
Of course it is. And, if you are a German soldiers tasked with cleaning your tank, the quickest (and now punishable) way of doing that is called "abdieseln" or dieseling down. Just add diesel or gasoline to the water/detergent mix in your bucket and use a hand broom to scrub the vehicle down with that. The tank will look perfect for inspection, but dieseling down is hell on the paint. Abdieseln may have been known by another name in World-War Two, but it was recommended practise then, escpecially for removing winter camouflage or multi-colour Tarnanstrich camouflage patterns done with dark yellow, olive green, and chocolate brown camo pastes over the vehicle base colour. Imagine what frequent Abdieseln will do to the authentic RAL 7021 Dunkelgrau paint job on your vehicle.
@@militaryminiaturesmagazine7952 Nothing like being exposed to diesel fuel.
Any modeler experiment with diseal on their finish? 😂😂😂
@@mark32092 Apart from the smell, the finish should be quite effective. Of course, the downside of the diesel-cleanser solution is that the vehicle collects a lot more dust than other vehicles which have been washed with just water and detergent.
A TD only a mother could love.
I'm curious about AK's Real Color. On the Real Color bottle labels, it says "Colors adjusted spectrum graphically to mirror reality". In their marketing speak they mention the "scale effect"... "The paints are lightened to account for the color scale effect, which is the idea that colors become lighter and grayer over distance." So, if this scale effect is a real thing, is it even a valid goal to find a precise match to the original color?
I haven’t noticed a lot of lightening with AK Real Colors… their 7021 is a bit too light, but their 8000, 7027, and 7021 are all pretty close to real samples. Is scale colour a thing? Over very long distances colours become lighter, less saturated and shift towards blue due to moisture and dust particles in the atmosphere, but that only works over long distances… longer than would be the case at distances replicating scales we use in modelling.
Yeah... I know what you mean. We repainted our M151a2s when I was in Germany. Even though we used the official green, black, brown , and tan ( I don't remember the official names.) our squad looked different compared to the other squads in our Platoon. .. and each was different.. We could tell which section by the vehicle colors and pattern. Regulations were that the patterns were to be the same. Many years ago they tried to maintain that but everyone got lazy about folowing the regulation pattern. I remember my CO in a Mech company didn't care if we followed the Reg Pattern but wanted all vehicules to be painted close in color and pattern.
So which mark 4 panzer was added to rommel toward end of campaign early 43?
You mean the campaign in Africa? The Ausf G was the last version to be added in Africa (starting in mid-1942). Newer Ausf Gs with newer features continued arriving in Africa up to April 43. Ausf G models sent to Africa were built before shurzen was added.
Wonderfully informative and I’ll be trying the MRP-034 Tank Grey for two kits I’ll be working on. I did hit subscribe to your channel (Panzermeister 36 had mentioned your channel). I have you ever tested Sand color used on German armored vehicles? Again excellent video thank you
Thanks for the kind words. I’ve played around with some of the different sand camo colours. AK Real Colors does a really good version of RAL 8000 and RAL 7027 (the base colours for the first and second Tropen schemes respectively). As there were two different official versions of RAL 7027 and a lot of variation based on how the pigment was mixed Dunkelgelb is a bit more challenging. I own a couple of original pieces, and may try a video in the future.
Have you done this with US olive drab for WWII vehicles?
Can you write the brand and name of first place. Never heard of it. Do you have something similar fir Dunkelgelb?
Its MRP Mr. Paint MRP-34 Acrylic. RAL 7021
U obviously didnt get the updated version
Way too complicated, and im building this, sheesh But im using ur info to plow thru this
Border models - nice quality products, horrifyingly awful instructions
So i just received this model and there correction sheet included for most of mistakes of swapping parts, etc Unfortunate about the recuperator not fitting into mantlet.
Maybe you’ll have better luck with the recuperator housing than I did. 😃
On Tamiya, I wonder if the new IJN grays are close to the RAL 7021. I'll experiment on those myself too. Kure gray though I think could be ruled out since it's too light. Tamiya is the most available in my country, and I also like to experiment with mixes anyway. I think when you try to make variated tones of color on the tank, you are likely to mix.
Let me know how the IJN greys work out. For a custom mix try black with just a little bit of Field Grey and Medium Blue.
Interesting vid!
Thanks!
Your medical box appears much lighter to ur 7021 swatch. Would have nice to lay your standard next to the box, but to happen.
Excellent, to the point review! Your review of history is wonderful
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you found it useful. 😀
I liked it very much, but you must pay a lot of attention to instructions because of parts showing wrong numbers or others that suddenly appear glued on the model without ever calling it out (i.e. C30). But overall I had fun building it
What about xf22? I have H32 but i find it too dark...
Tamiya RLM Grey? It’s much too light, but you could use it to lighten a better matching (darker) paint if you needed a highlight colour for colour modulation. I use XF65 for that.
@@brucethemodelnoob Thanks, I learned a lot from your video. I think that in the end I will use the AK057 (I like the real colors)

A bit late to the party, but would Mr Hobby Aqueous H416 RLM66 Black Grey make a decent substitute for Mr Hobby Aqueous H401? They don't have that at my local hobby store and only have H416.
I’m sorry, H416 slipped through the cracks in my two testing videos, so I can’t say how accurate it is. Does your local store have any other brands?
@@brucethemodelnoob they have Vallejo Mecha, Tamiya (but no XF-63) and Mr Color (but I don't use lacquers).
@@miken8875 here’s a possibility… try Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black with a few drops of XF-65 Field Grey and a very very very tiny bit of XF-50 Field Blue.
@@brucethemodelnoob unfortunately, they're out of stock of all three of those. I do have Aqueous H32 Field Gray, Aqueous H12 Flat black, Aqueous H42 Blue Gray, and Tamiya XF-18 Intermediate Blue. I was wondering if I could incorporate a blue with any of those mixes or even H416, since Panzermeister36 used a 3 part mixture of XF-63, XF-18, and XF-1(? I think it was white) in his German Grey video.
Coming back to this to say that H416 looks very similar to H401... But I ended up covering it almost completely because of how I was painting my Tiger. Either way, I'll definitely use it for another panzer grey project.
Excellent

here is my recipe for thin cement, which works exactly like Tamiya.... 50% lacquer thinner + 50% Acetone this will have much less odor than cellulose thinner/ lacquer thinner on its own, and less odor than Tamiya thin cement... the acetone facilitates fast clean evaporation, with some solvent power, the lacquer thinner is the stronger solvent that melts the plastic. enjoy ;O)
Interesting. Not sure what the lacquer thinner does, other than dilute the acetone. I can’t recall lacquer thinner dissolving plastic. Does it speed drying time?
@@brucethemodelnoob the lacquer thinner I use which is from Mexico and dirt cheap does dissolve the plastic... the acetone slows the melting and speeds up drying since acetone evaporates at room temp fast.

@@brucethemodelnoob and a fellow Canadian to boot!👍
I'd like to suggest another for you to consider. The only problem is getting ahold of it, as far as I can tell no-one here in the UK has received fresh stock so you may have to look around in the states for it. The company is Privateer Press and the the colour is Coal Black, under their P3 paint range. I would say that it beats(hands down in my opinion)all of the paints you rated in terms of closeness. It has a kind of unusual dark blue/slight green tint, but the dark is the dominant colour. Used over a black undercoat it gives a very good account of itself.
Thanks for the info. I’d certainly be curious to try it. It can’t beat MRP, but could equal it perhaps. It’s a perfect match. 😀
Sorry if I'm asking this poorly, but do you suppose taking into account the effect that "smaller scale paints should be lighter" would affect these rankings?
You’re referring to what some people call the “scale colour” effect. I’m not convinced that’s really a thing… I have plans to do a video to explore the idea.
You‘re absolutely right. The effect you are hinting at is called Aerial Perspective. Authentic RAL 7021 is perfect for repainting the Lamborghini in your garage, but it would be insane to paint a small scale model of an early-war German Panzer in that colour. Authentic RAL 7021 needs to be tinted prior to painting a scale model. How much you need to tint, depends on the scale of the model. The trouble with most hobby paints is that we cannot know if they are authentic RAL 7021 (like Revell No. 9 is), or if they are pre-tinted convenience versions of RAL 7021 that already account for aerial perspective. Revell 87 "Panzer Grey" may just be such a pre-tinted convenience product. However, the trouble with pre-tinted versions of RAL 7021 is that manufacturers do not let us know if they tinted their paint for 1:35 scale or 1:72 scale models. While it may be tempting to assume that Tamiya tints their paints with 1:35 scale in mind, being a 1:35 scale model manufacturer, we cannot be sure of that. www.miniatures.de/aerial-perspective.html
Color scale is not a thing.
You're right, there is no such thing as colour scale. The effect is known as Aerial Perspective.
I do have a book from the 90s about how real paints look too dark and toy like for scale models sizes. I’ll have to dig it out and read
This is a bit late probably, but holy heck, the Vallejo paint looks like you were painting the model black. I'm highly surprised it was made to look LIGHTER than the real paint.
