Kent is a leading UK critical law school. In addition to learning the detail of the law, students at Kent are taught to think about its history, development and relationship with wider society. This approach allows students to fully understand the law, and enhances what is already a wonderfully exciting and deeply interesting subject. Our critical approach not only makes the study of law more interesting, it helps to develop crucial skills and abilities required for legal practice. We hope the videos uploaded here will help you learn more about our critical approach, the programmes we offer and the experiences you can expect to gain as a student at Kent.
The legal legacies of slavery and empire
The UK's laws and constitution draws heavily on the past and tradition for its legitimacy and authority. Magna Carta, signed in 1215, is often cited as a justification for trial by jury. But as lawyers, we do better at remembering some events than others. We will explore the operation of colonial corporations, and how the UK's involvement in the slave trade has continued to shape the country's laws well into the 21st century.

Land rent and paying fielty to the landlord is the modern format of slavery. To work to enrich someone else and not yourself. Working and making no material gains.
Slavery wasn't abolished. It was redesigned. To encompass more people.
